Strength:

Good remote control.

Weakness:

Product support, warranty

Purchased this unit over the comparably priced Sony, Have enjoyed my choice until now, just eleven months later, when I discovered the manufacturers waranty doesn't cover very much! I am probably very naive in the sense that I wasn't aware that you could not watch a standard tv signal (4:3) on this tv for any length of time. That is, you are supposed to use the false 16:9 image (zoom 1) at all times when the picture is in 4:3 format. This results in a very distorted image, one that stretches the picture to fit the screen size. Don't get me wrong, I understand that the screen is ideal for a HD signal or for DVD movies, but for those of us who still have standard tv broadcasts to deal with when we're not watching an HD channel, we might want to see the picture as it was broadcast. This tv apparently will not last the first year without resulting in very visible 'burn' lines at the 4:3 ratio location. I would estimate that over the past eleven months, I have watched regular tv broadcasts less than 35% of the time, and now I'm seeing the permanent burn lines of a 4:3 image on my screen. I called toshiba for service under waranty, and was told that it's my own fault, and therefore the warranty will not cover this problem. I have friends that bought the Sony 57 inch tv, and I know for a fact, they have similar viewing habits, and yet they have no such burn lines on thier screen. I chose this tv because the picture quality seemed better for the money, now, in lieu of the support from Toshiba, I'm regretting my choice.

Strength:

awesome picture, ecellent color, fantastic DVD and HD-TV playback.nice cabinet desing and looks, and I would sujest if you can get the TV calibrated by a ISF professinal, It is well worth it, simply aesome results.

Weakness:

my only gripe here is the bit of speaker hiss a low volume levels.

I purchased the Toshiba HDX82 based on three things , I felt it had the best picture compared to Hitachi,Sony,Pansonic,Samsung ect. The Toshiba HDX82 HAS A INCREDIBLE PICTURE, on all inputs even cable with thier noies reduction systym [cable dnr] Secoundly the brightness, it is just right when watching in day light conditions, I leave it on the standard setting, and in the evening I sellect the cinema mode, which is were this TV excels, it has deep blacks and crisp sharpness and a vivid picture. I could not be happier, dvd playback is ae wsome, and [True HD-TV broadcast is simply outstanding] the reason I say true HD-TV is a lot of the time, the tv broadcasters send out a signal that is not true High Definition, so what some people think is HD-TV is really not . JUST WATCH THE SUPER BOWL , OR THE JAY LENO SHOW , THEN WATCH A DIFFERENT SHOW THAT THEY SAY IS HD TV AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE. And on the third point, the price I paid $2600.00 canadian.

Strength:

value, picure (when you get a good unit)

Weakness:

Customer and service support

I bought this unit new the week of the super bowl. new out of the box it had a "warped" picture. Very noticable when the picture panned sceanery or when there was a stock ticker tape , sporting events like football where lines on the field showed a bad bowing effect right in the middle of the screen. I had a service tech come out and look at it and he saw the same thing but could not adjust out the warpage. 3 weeks later they took the tv away and 2 months later i just got it back and the same picture is there. The 2 months the TV was gone i called Toshiba customer service and requested a new TV. I will now try to get a new one if it takes an attorney since no one seems to be able to fix or want to work on it.

COLOR (I wish it came in black) Picture look better when standing

It was between the 57-sony or the 57-toshiba. I purchased the toshiba because I could not put my center speaker on top of the sony. After several tries with Comcast Cable, we now have a great picture. All the HD channels are beautiful but not all are 5.1. The price was right at $1950.00 at Tweeter. Also about $500.00 cheaper than the sony. Why does all RPTV look better when standing?

Strength:

Clarity, widescreen stretch, inputs, remote easy to use, price to quality, too many to list

Weakness:

weight and only one piece, hitachi 57's come in two pieces. Some bad color rendition on regular cable, probably due to lower quality signal, only 9 points of covergence although fairly effective

When looking at hd projection tv's, I had narrowed my decision to Hitachi or Toshiba. I chose the Toshiba because I found it to be the most bang for the buck. It was over 1300 less than the Hitachi SWX with similar picture quality. The tv took a little getting used to due to it's sheer size. After about 40 hours of use the tv has settled nicely. It was a little blurry for the first month. It is crystal clear now. Even cable is pretty good. Of course DVD is incredible. I can't wait to get a high def signal into my house and we will see how great this tv can be. Very happy with purchase, I look forward to watching tv again.

Color rendition is outstanding Clear detailed picture Remote is top quality

Weakness:

Menus are a little difficult to navigate

I purchased the 57HDX82 after a long, long process of reading reviews and going store to store comparing sets. To me, the Toshiba sets have the most faithful color rendition than any other HDTV sets & compare nicely with the Hitachi sets; but that is because the CRT's used in each are made by Hitachi. The HDX series is the Cinema series and adds (over the HD series) the DVI input, an antiglare screen, slightly better designed tubes and a very nice blue backlit universal remote. The picture is sharp, clear and free of artifacts with a progressive scan DVD player (I use the JVC XV-723GD). Cable looks good too, but a bad source will net a bad picture! There are several modes to view 4:3 material on this 16:9 screen. This is another reason I bought this set... Between all of them, you can find one that looks natural; and if not, there are settings to "scroll" the screen up, down, right, and left until you get the picture centered the way you want. There have been reports of flicker/burst problems with the HDX series but I have not experienced them. I think this was fixed with the newer sets. I couldn't be happier! The price is low and the quality high. Get one and you won't be sorry!

Strength:

Picture and sound quality, the 4:3 stretch to widescreen is flawless, (I can't even tell it was stretched!) and unit is constructed of wood instead of plastic.

Weakness:

None to date.

I was trying to decide between the Hitachi and the 57HD82. Both are awesome TV's, but after a little research, I decided on the 57HDX82. I didn't get a chance to view the TV before I bought it, but now that I have it, I see I made the right choice. Picture and sound quality is second to none. I highly recommend this TV to anyone who is considering a RPHDTV. I must plug www.6ave.com. I ordered my set on a Thursday, and it was in my living room the next Tuesday. Awesome customers service and super fast shipment.
