Strength:

picture, sound, easy to use menu,

Weakness:

none so far (thank god!)

i love this t.v, I was sceptical at first about buying a projection t.v. but when i saw this model in the show room i was blown away. I mean for the size of the screen the picture is pretty crisp. I watch alot of sports and dvd movies and both look incredible. I would definitly recommend this t.v.

Weakness:

I have had the TV for 4 months and I've had to get it repaired twice. The power would go off by itself and then turn on just as magically!!! Toshiba still hasn't figured out why!! I have never been so disappointed in a product like this before.

I thought I was getting a good deal for my money but, now I think I'm in for a good deal of headaches and tension wondering when the TV will blow up again. What a noise, when it goes, it goes with a big popping sound that makes you jump out of the chair. I really regret buying this television. I'm new to this DVD & HDTV scene and boy do I feel burned by this terrible product. Now wish that I could have seen this website before buying the TV because I would not have bought the 50HX70 HDTV !!! I paid $3715 Cdn including taxes for this 50" pain in the neck, buyers beware!!!

Price, features, picture quality

Weakness:

Broke after 3 days! Glare from screen.

Well sorry to say my 50HX70 broke only after 3 days! No
picture, not sure about sound as I do not turn on the sound as I use a Yamaha for the audio. The TV was great for 3 days while it worked. Nice picture. Enjoyed it very much. Liked all of the features. The remote was nice, was able to use it for DirecTV, as well as DVD and VHS tape player. The volume lock feature is a good idea as no matter what source I select on the remote, the volume always works on my Yamaha receiver. This is a good feature, since I always use the Yamaha for sound. The screen did show some reflective glare. I knew it would as I saw that in the showroom. I guess most RPTVs with a protection screen have some glare.
The picture was nice and I didn't even use VE to tweak it yet. Did turn down the contrast from 100 down to 50!

The store where I purchased it is going to replace it with a new one this week. I am a little worried since another reviewer had problems as well. I am still going to give a rating of 4 even though I cannot even go home tonight and watch it since it is broke and will not be getting a replacement for a couple more days :(

Strength:

Picture quality, inputs, and setup features.

Weakness:

Owner's manual is not very specific.

When my TV finally arrived I thought the picture was going to need some adjustment based on the other reviews. I made the necessary connections (sat receiver, DVD player, VCR) and powered it on. Out of the box the convergence was dead on. The only adjustment I made was to the contrast. I set it at 70 for everything except DVDs. For movies I set the contrast at 50. I am very relieved that my TV worked without all the problems I've read about. I did quite a bit of comparison shopping before I decided on the Toshiba. Hitachi, Sony, and Panisonic DTVs in this price range did not look as good as the Toshiba. A friend of mine owns a RCA RPTV, and there is no comparison. I loaded Toy Story 2 into my DVD player and the picture was absolutly fantastic. It was almost three dimentional. I'm also glad I went with the 4:3 format. Most of the programing is 4:3 anyway and with the wide screen stretch capability the whole screen is filled. I am very happy with this purchase. I have had good luck with Toshiba products in the past, as far as reliability is concerned, and I believe this set will be no exception. One thing I would like is more information in the owner's manual. The information was very general in nature. I highly recommend the 50HX70 if you're planning on purchasing a mid priced RPDTV.

Strength:

Incredible picture quality expecially with satellite or progressive-scan dvd input, multiple component and s-video inputes, improved on-screen menus, capable of saving different picture setting for each input source (dvd, satellite, etc.)

Weakness:

Slow switching between channels, slight problem with ColorStream Input #1

I had this model's predecessor (TN50X81) for well over a year and enjoyed it very much. However, I experienced a problem with the tilt and position of the image which could not be corrected by a technician. In addition, I noticed slight dot crawl and/or video noise when I had my dvd player hooked up to the ColorStream Input #1, although #2 seemed to be better.

In any event, I decided to return the unit and I got the new model 50HX70. The picture is noticeably superior than the old model, and I had always thought that that one was really good! The technology built into this unit is incredible. It provides a practically flawless picture when watching DirecTV, but it absolutely blew me away when I hooked up my new Toshiba 6200 progressive scan dvd player via the ColorStream component input. Although I was initially reluctant to admit it before I broke down and got the PS dvd player, the internal line doubler in the TV is not even close to as good as sending the progressive signal straight from the dvd player.

With a PS dvd player, the images are incredible, with vibrant color, extremely tight resolution and no motion artifacts. I don't want to turn this into a review of the 6200 dvd player, but you've GOT to get one if you've got this TV. I noticed a lot of motion artifacts before when I had a regular interlaced dvd player hooked up and let the TV do the line doubling internally. This was extrememly annoying and very distracting, especially in high-contrast daylight scenes such as in "Mystery, Alaska", "Toy Story 2" and even certain scenes at the end of "Seven". The only proof you'll ever need is to set up this dvd player and to hit the button which allows you to switch between interlaced and progressive scan when watching a dvd. I always thought regular dvd was about as good as it gets, but the picture really comes alive on PS, especially with this high quality TV.

The only problem is that, once again, I noticed some slight video noise or distortion when I hooked the dvd player up through ColorStream Input #1, although #2 seems to be fine. The easiest way to check for this is to turn your dvd player on and get it to a solid screen by hitting stop. Look closely to see if there is any dot crawl or video noise against the solid background. I don't know if this is a common problem with Toshiba RPTV's, but now I've experienced it with two different models (and I know it's not my dvd player since I've switched that too).

The last comment I would make is that this unit's default settings as shipped are WAY off. You should start by immediately lowering the contrast to around 25-40, depending on your viewing environment and preference. While another reviewer indicated that he had his contrast set at 70, this is far too high and will provide a washed out picture and possibly even damage your set with prolonged use. Also bring down the brightness below 50 at least and reduce sharpness to 0-20. I would recommend calibrating this TV with Video Essentials right away, it's much too expensive to take any chances, not to mention that the picture improves 100% when it's properly calibrated.

Strength:

Good picture and sound when working.

Weakness:

TV power flickers off and on. This is my second TV (same model). The first set had the same problem.

A and B sound replaced my first defective set. The second set has the same problem as the first. Sometime the picture goes blank and returns. Sometime the power flickers off and on. Toshiba is refusing to replace it or refund my money. They would rather send a repair person to come fix the problem. HEADACHE!!! I paid 3050 CDN + taxes.

If you are considering purchase of this TV - please be aware of this problem.
