Strength:

Picture, sound, quality, ease of set-up, and reliably.

Weakness:

None I've been able to find.

Absolutley love this TV. I got a great deal on it, brand new, from Brandsmart (video manager is a friend). Picture quality is excellent, good sound. I also have a 65" Mitsubishi (2002) widescreen and the picture quality doesn't come close to the Toshiba. I've had it for 2 years now without any problems at all. Even after two years of owning this unit I am still amazed with the picture quality espesially when I watch a DVD (Toshiba SD6200 Progressive Scan).

Who said this unit don not have 16:9 squeeze on 480i or 480p? Well after two years of using, if not mistake, I think I found the way to do 16:9 anamorphic squeeze for anamorphic DVDs. It's very simple, wile you start you anamorphic DVD, press Pause on remote and hold it, the screen will turn to multi image mode, stop DVD, play it again. You regular black letter box will disappear, the top and bottom part of the screen now become gray. That’s what happened when I play “Saving Private Ryan”, when I play 2.35:1 anamorphic DVDs .How ever, there’s still a black strip between the picture and gray area on top and bottom, which I think it’s every reasonable because the TV squeeze only to 16:9 ratio. If I took the same procedure to play a non-anamorphic DVD, this TV still gives black letter box without gray area. I’ve never seen any real 16:9 anamorphic squeeze before could any one confirm if this is it? My setup is a JVC 521vx none progressive scan DVD player with component video input.

Quality/Reliability???

As stated in my earlier review it was dead on arrival, but, when it was fixed it was well worth the wait. The tv did shut off by itself accompanied by a loud pop. The good news is i figured this problem out. When i set the clock it happened. I stop setting the clock and it hasent happened for allmost 10 months. Digital cable is awesome dvd even better!! I hate to say it but i would buy this set again!!!!

Strength:

i love the picture

Weakness:

tv would shut itself off and back on again..

The first week i had this set it shut itself off and turned back on again. When it came on the clock would be reset. At first i didnt think anything of it, but when i saw on this site that other 50hx70 owners had the same problem i looked into it. I bought this set online, so it was a little different than driving to the store and complaining to a person. So after many emails to the store, they contacted toshiba. Toshiba contacted a local tv repair shop that i had look at the set already to no prevail, and gave them an idea to replace a capacitor. This one little piece is no bigger than a millimeter in size, but they seem to think that this is the fix. Other than this problem performance of this set has been outstanding. Hopefully this toshiba "fix" will work. Just wanted to let others out there that toshiba "seems" to have an idea about this problem so let them know.

Weakness:

Reliablility?

My 50HX70 set was purchased only for 3 months. Before I purchased it, I visited this website for reviews on Toshiba and Hitachi. Every single brand has its own weaknesses and problems. I ended up purchased Toshiba.

Toshiba Rear Projection has a common problem which is "Turn Off" with no reason, so far, it happened twice to me, but this is not the problem annoying me, I still accept it.

After 1 month, the real problem is top left of my screen is the resolution lines are getting mess up and clarity had been reduced. This is what annoys me. Called up my local service center, they are ordering the part, unfortuneately, part is being backorder, waiting about 2 months now, hopefully the can call me and tell me it arrives.

Perhaps I am the one without luck with this set, I have been told me the technician this is a rare problem.

Good luck to your set!

Strength:

Very good picture, value, lot of inputs

Weakness:

Cheap cabinet

This is a great projection tv. I was looking for a widescreen tv initially, but there is not much 16:9 programming on cable/tv i settled for 4:3. It still gives
16:9 picture size equivalent to that of 46" 16: 9 set .
I have it connected to Toshiba sd 3109 dv through component input. However I do not notice any major difference in picture quality between composite input and compoenent input maybe it is due to excellent 3d y/c combilter bilit in tv which sepearted color accurately.
It has lot of inputs 2 component 3 s- video, 3 composite and 2 antenna . Only downside is that , It doesnt provide
16:9 squeeze in 480p or 480 i signal.However it has 16:9 squeeze mode in 1080i signal.

This tv shines if input source is good, However on weak signal picture will be better on smaller tube sets.

I recommend this tv if your are looking for a good price /performance ratio.

Strength:

HDTV Ready.... Line doubler..... 16:9 ratio on Hdtv signal

Weakness:

It doesn,t have 16:9 ratio on 480i or 480p...

I Purchased this item at Audio Centre in Ottawa. It was the least expensive unit with the most features..... Picture Quality is superb on DVD..... and it looks really good on regular Rogers Cable....... It was really simple to do the 9 point convergence on it.....I paid 3100.00 Canadian...it is 1500.00 cheaper than Sonys model.

Strength:

Picture, inputs, on-screen menu

Weakness:

None since I've had it (2 months from this review)

Fortunately, I have not experienced any of the issues stated
in some of the reviews. My 50HX70 has been great. The on-screen menu makes it easy to adjust picture, etc. The remote is fine. Progressive DVD looks great. Regular cable
is fine. I hook up the DVD & VCR directly to the TV as opposed to going through the digital receiver and get great
results. I was concerned that 2.35:1 aspect ratios would
look to thin on the TV but that has really not been a concern. T2, Matrix, etc. all looked excellent. I do not regret going the 4:3 route since prices for 16:9 are still very high. Between the DVD player & the TV, watching the the meteor scene in Dinosaur was captivating. VHS also looks very good, Star Wars, Hunt for Red October, etc. No problems here - very satisfied and would recommend this HDTV.

My system:
Toshiba 50HX70
Toshiba SD6200 DVD Player
Toshiba VCR
Technics 5-disc CD changer (9 yrs old & running great)
Denon AVR3801
Polk CS400i Center (bi-wired)
Polk RT800i Fronts (will bi-wire but not yet)
Polk SBW450 Sub (had NHT SuperSub - wasn't satified)
Klipsch SS-5 Rear Surrounds (16 gauge)

-all heavy duty cables

Strength:

Ease Of Set-up, Picture Quality

Weakness:

Nothing Major--the manual is a little vague and the default settings aren't real good.

I went from an RCA 31" to this and after adjusting the setting preferences, I am very pleased. I was waiting for an affordable, quality HDTV ready unit and I think this is the one. I went in and immediately picked this unit out over the others for picture quality, and then when I was quoted a affordable price I was sold. The $100 rebate helps too!

Strength:

Very clear, detailed and colourful picture. The better the source, the better the results. Offers several inputs and at normal viewing level the screen is evenly lit with no obvious "hot spots"

Weakness:

Picture appears soft with composite sources such as laserdisc and vhs

In a nutshell, I am thrilled with this tv. Before purchase I compared it to the $4000 (Cdn) 53" Sony and found that while the Sony had somewhat better colour and picture the Toshiba had better impression of depth and fine definition around objects that I really enjoyed. The Panasonic had unbearable motion artifacts and was generally lacking.

Even given the price difference I thought the Toshiba was very comparable and now that I've seen it with anamorphic dvd's through my toshiba dvd player's component outputs I am blown away. There are no scan lines, minimal-to-no dot crawl or motion artifacts and colours are vibrant. I found after using Video Essentials that the Contrast can be between 35 to 50 depending on the source, Brightness 50 to 57, Colour 35 to 45, Tint -3 to -11, No to Flesh Tone and DNR and use the COOL setting. Surprisingly, I found the Sharpness should not be set to 0, rather it can range from 20 to 45 if the picture needs that extra bit of definition.

Regular cable is watchable, but certain channels appear so washed out I use the WARM setting to help bring out some definition and the colours.

The only negatives for me is that the picture from my Pioneer laserdisc player is soft, almost slightly out of focus. I also found the s-video superior than composite, which is a surprise as composite was much better on my old 27" GAOO. My guess is the comb filter on this Toshiba is not very good. The other thing is that the 3 crosshairs on the right side have some blooming in the reds. The store is sending a technician next week to adjust these and possibly to tweak the focus. If the picture becomes any better than this I don't think I'll leave our entertainment room!

Final price was $3010 Cdn plus 15% taxes and this included 2 years additional warranty, cash discount and we picked up.
