I am planning to buy the Pioneer SD-582-HD5 2000 MODEL although it has been discontinued now.I liked the reviews here for it. Does anyone think it is not a good idea? Also is there someway I can see the tv before ordering it as I would like to see the stretching of 4:3 mode to full mode to make sure I am comfortable with it.Most shops I called donot have the last year's model. Any ideas?

Strength:

Attractive cabinet - little plastic as opposed to others, picture quality, RGB and 2 component inputs for DVD and/or HD, 72 point convergence, including detailed screen adjustments.

Weakness:

Cannot change screen size when receiving a HD source (locks in full mode). This is a problem because not all HD channels are always sending HD material, for instance HBO, and it would be nice to change to "Natural Wide" instead of full in these instances.

The picture on this TV when the source is either DVD or HD is outstanding, especially HD. When viewing a non DVD or HD signal using non component inputs (SVHS), the picture on some satellite channels looks like it needs to be focused(some earlier reviews call it "muddled"), thus the reason for the 4 star value rating. Overall, this is a 5 star - better than I imagined.

We are very happy to get this wide screen HDTV with the price we paid, I love the split screen feature, great sound. The 72 points convergence fine tune is awsome. The picture is nice and clear, not bad to watch the cable tv, watching tennis tournament from this machine is a great enjoyment.

Strength:

Incredible HD performance, Versatile input and menu options, Brightness and clearity!

Weakness:

TV Locks in full mode when receiving progressive signal!

The true strength of this TV is when it is fed a HD signal! I have researched long and hard and looked at all the available HDTV's and I must say this TV has as good and better HD performance then any other HDTV I have seen! Colors and the incredible crispness of the picture is stunning to say the least. Coupled with a Progressive DVD player (Toshiba 6200) this TV once again shines! I must say that it is still quite stunnung with the former Panasonic DVD-A120U Interlaced DVD player as well.

Another feature I really like with this TV is the 72 point convergence screen you get through the user menu! This is great for HD TV's because when viewing HD content you really need to have your convergence dialed in good or it will show up quite noticably during HD viewing.

Pioneer also was smart to allow HD and progressive content to be played through the two component and the one RGB (VGA) input! This is hany when you have 2 or three HD/Progressive sources to hook up!

All in all this is without a doubt the best price/performance HDTV I have encountered and would highly recommend this TV to any and every prospective HDTV buyer!

Weakness:

Locks into full mode on progressive scan

I compared this set to all of the above and none could match it. The Pioneer has the best combination of performance and features. I found for viewing from 10-12 feet back the 55/56 inch sets are just too small. The 58/60 inch is just right. I used the Avia disc to set-up the picture and DVD's are sharp and colorful. I will get it ISF calibrated in a few months and the Dish 6000 for HDTV. I Highly recommend it!

Weakness:

Says it is 16:9 but is not really, read why.

Hello ok I got an email asking why I thought the Pioneer was not really 16:9.

First lets start off by saying that TVs are measured diagonally, which is misleading to whether a TV is 16:9.

So what should make a TV 16:9, which is what most companies use.

First you take the 16/9 = 1.7778 this is the ratio that you too should get when you do the following.

1. Measure the TV screen horizontally and only measure the screen of it and write this number down, I used inches.

2. Measure the TV screen vertically or up and down and measure only the screen of it, and it this number down.

3. now all you have to do is take the horizontal lentght and divide it the vertical length of only measuring the screen!.

ration = ( horizontal length ) / ( vertical length )

now go ahead and do this and you will see for your self that the ration of the Pioneer is not 1.7778. I could be a little off due to manufacturing errors etc but should not be over 1.8778.

Thus when you look at Pioneer it says it is 16:9 but really looks like a 4:3 or standard tv that is just a little longer sideways but not enough to be a true 16:9 in my eyes and numbers.

So somebody please post there numbers so I can compare to mine that I took at store.

Regards,

Weakness:

NOt true 16:9, This TV says it 58 inch, but is smaller Horizontal or sideways that other TVs that are 56, 57 inches.

First of all I baught the sony kp-57xbr10 before I looked at this, and with circuit City they give you 30 days to try it out or take it back with no restock fee. So I got the sony and I decided to take back the sony for the following reason:

1. The Sony only had 1 progressive input thus I could only hook up 1 progressive input thus with an HDTV reciever and progressive DVD I would have to switch it out or go and pay $300 to get a switch so I could have 2 inputs to same place.

Thus I went on the market for a TV that had 2 progressive inputs and I read here about the pioneer and after reading about it I was exiceted since it had 2 progressive inputs so I could hook up a progressive DVD and and hDTV reciever.

I found the TV at Bestbuy for 3999.00 but was quickly shocked to see that the 58 inch Pioneer seemed smaller than the 57 Sony so i measured it sideways, and yes it is smaller!

Wow I was shocked, this TV looks like a 4:3 not a true 16:9.
That may explain why DVDs on the Pioneer don't fill up the screen and why the black bars above it and below it are apartent.

Even the Toshiba 56 was longer sideways! Measure for yourself to see this, I took a tape measure with me so I could see if it would fit in home and it ended up not being true 16:9 as it looked to me, the other 16:9 TV have a truer 16:9.

So I did not buy it! Why was not 16:9 enough for me! 58 yes it maybe but is diagnole measured and it is higher up and down but sideways is not true 16:9 which may expalin why cable looks bettter on this tv since it is not streched out as much.

So why get this if not true 16:9 like other sets on market.

So why did I get in the end? None, all are poor. Sony has better 16:9 ration but has 1 progressive input, Pioneer not 16:9 enough for me and the rest I think suck except for the Mitsubis that I am now looking into.

So why all the good reviews from user how great this thing is? Maybe cause you got it but it is not 16:9 enough for the price. You might aswell get a 4:3 HDTV that is cheaper than this want to be 16:9 TV.

Regards

Ok I read hear how great the Pioneer was and how good the picture was. So I went out and hunt one down.
