I just wanted to submit a review now that I have the new hd dtv receiver. HD really shows what this tv will do. If you think you have a great tv add the hd receiver and get ready to be shocked. Check out the demo hd loop on direct tv or get hbo hd on channel 509 its like having a brand new tv compared to when I had cable and regular direct tv.

Strength:

Wonderful picture for DVD's

Weakness:

Can't adjust aspect ratio for component video input, no 720p.

This is my first RPTV, bought primarily for watching DVD's. For this purpose it is wonderful. Using the component video inputs hooked up to my Pioneer 414 dvd player, I get a picture that is almost as good as I get with my Toshiba 32" direct view TV, and far more impressive since it is so big. I noticed that when viewing broadcast TV or dss, the picture can look pretty bad, but after viewing my Toshiba I realized I was getting the same picture, but on a smaller screen you just don't notice the problems.

I set the color temperature to warm (6500k), and tuned it using Video Essentials. Apparently it doesn't do "blacker than black". I set the brightness to about 40%, which is where blooming started. The contrast had to be turned almost off to prevent that vertical line from bending (sorry, I haven't used it enough to remember exactly what is going on with these tests). With the Toshiba, I do get blacker than black, and the vertical line doesn't bend regardless of the contrast setting. Also, I was actually able to turn the sharpness control up to around 20% without distorting the test pattern. One complaint is that the adjustments do not show a numeric value; just a slider (but the slider is in an unobtrusive corner of the display, unlike the Toshiba). After I adjusted color and tint, I had to back off the color adjustment because the red was WAY too red, and the yellow was slightly orange. This left the color and tint pretty close to 50%. As for the built-in line doubler, it may not be the equivalent of a Faroujda (sp?), but I rarely notice any artifacts.

Also, when viewing broadcast/dss signals, you are given the choice of 480p or 960i viewing. To me the 960i was very distracting, with lots of "shimmering" distortion, so I always preferred the 480p.

At any rate, after my relatively uninformed adjustments, I believe I have it close enough, and will get it ISF calibrated in January. Currently, it presents a great picture for DVD's. For right at $4k, including tax and delivery, and no interest/payments until January 2001, I am VERY satisfied with my purchase. It's not a Runco FPTV with a line tripler, but it also costs about 1/10th the price. I too, am waiting for the release of the Hughes-manufactured Mitsubishi HDTV/DirectTV tuner to complete my purchase. The only reason I give it 4 start overall is I have seen better, and I wished it supported 720p. For value, I would give it 6 stars if I could...

Weakness:

Need a better remote, Toshiba has the best remotes out there.

Well, let me say that I reviewed just about every 16:9 HDTV
monitor on the market at the time.
However, I could not review the Toshiba models as they were not availible in the Denver market at the time of my purchase.

I have waited to do a review becuase it takes alot of time to get aquainted with a set of this type. No matter who the manufacturer. And I can proudly say that this set is the one to get. Period. For value, quality, ease of operation,
I/O options, features. None is higher.

I read the Sound&Vision review. Thought it was okay, However, it was the side by side comparisons that really did it.

It's in our nature to look back and think about a purchase
of this type, and wonder if it is the right one. I'm no different. I did that too. Here's the thing. The other
day I was back in the Store looking at new models and other
manufacturer's products.

The sound track I was in had a new Sony 16:9 and the new Mitsu WS-55807 side by side. In a word after looking at both
which had a Hi-def signal present on both. The Mitsu's picture was immensley better. No doubt about it. It just looked better. In fact it looked Awesome. Sony looked like,
Well, Sony. I thought to myself. Man, am I glad I chose the Mitsu. The rich color saturation, the detail, the imaging,
was nothing short of spectacular. This was with no calibration. I agree however, that the contrast was pushed too high. But this is true of all sets in stores where they are competing for your eyes.

Now, after living with this machine for over a year all I can say is that it just gets better and better. I love this set. It definetly is the value of all the other sets out there. Don't bother looking and comparing, I've done that for you. Just get this set. Hook it up with the DTV component input, sit back and be prepared to get blown away.

Incase you didn't know this, you CAN attach the component out of you DVD to the DTV input of this set. The picture through this input is 'better' that the one that they suggest you use. Which is input 3, I believe. You do not need a progressive scan DVD player to achieve a spectacular picture with this input. Try It !

When watching a 1080i input source, this set it simply the one to beat. I continue to marvel at the detail that this produces. Even after reviewing the Flat panel displays, this set is better at achieving movie environment. Those sets by the way usually only produce 720p. They will down convert a full HDTV source.

In order to achieve a full HDTV signal you need a full 1080i signal. As well as full 9 inch CRT's. It must be able to produce 1920 x 1280 pixel image. This set incorporates only 7 inch CRT's. however, it is able to achieve, just shy that pixel resolution.

It's a natural image that does not stress at any point. Images seem to fly off the screen. Almost 3 -dimesional.

In closing I can after over a year, that this set is 5 star
set all the way around.

I did pay a bit more, however, I was an early adopter. And that cost included Sound-Tracks great service plan. You should get a plan the covers calibration. and replacment.

Last words,

Forget about everyhting else, Get this set.

Thanks

nothing with T.V. but not analog signal friendly

I have had my set for two months now and all I can say is WOW!! With the right source (DVD's and other high level signals) this set shines. I have read several other reviews (hometheater.com) and I guess I was lucky with the set I had delivered to my home. My set has shown no problems to date. And after I use the Video Essntials DVD to set it up I was really impressed with the picture. Now I must say regular T.V. signals are poor on most channels, but it's not the sets fault. From what I hear my local Cable company will soon offer Digital signals and that will be a big improvement over the regular analog signals I get now.

No 720p. Digital jaggies in ntsc

I had this unit for less than 1 month and returned it because I was basically unhappy with the NTSC picture. If you compare it with the Sony XBRs you can see a slight digital roughness with the Mitsu's picture in NTSC. Of course, DVD progressive was stunning and this tv is worth it if one were just viewing dvds.

But I also watch local broadcast and it is quite frustrating to look at digital jaggies moving about the screen. Also, there is no 720p with this model nor with the 55807, which I think will be a serious oversight on Mitsubishi's part, since I understand this format is already being broadcast. There is also serious talk of bringing 720p to dvd, per Mr. Kane of ISF. At this time I have a wait and see attitude, or perhaps just getting Panasonic's dtv, which has 720p.

Awesome picture, feels like you're in a theater. Love the widescreen effect.

Weakness:

That it broke down 20 months after we bought it.

My husband wanted this set, me I really didn't care. Once we got it about four weeks after, we purchased it. Apparently Mitsubishi was backlogged. The set looks great, and was performing good up until about a month ago. I was watching CNN on 9/12 when I got this funny burning plastic smell, then my picture got a rainbow effect on the bottom. My entire picture looked like I was trying to view one of those 3-D picture books. I called the good guys who sent out a tech. 10 days later. He said six circuit chips in the main frame of the TV had fried out! He said that it would probably be easier to replace the whole board but The Good Guys requires them to repair at all cost before moving on to the next step. NeedLess to say I am really disgusted that this $4000 set broke down so quickly. But my biggest complaint is that the Premier Performance Guarantee we purchased from the Good Guys is anything but that. Can you believe the tech. came out on 9/22 ordered the parts on 9/26 and the parts didn't arrive until 10/10 (because they neglected to overnight them) now I am waiting another two weeks for the tech. to fit our repair into his schedule. I realize these kinds of repairs always take long, but the Good Guys sold us on a 5 year insurance that guaranteed we would get priority repair service, over other customers. So if we are the priority, I hate to think what kind of service you get if you are not. Basically my advice is once you have decided if this set is for you research the warranty that covers it, and DON'T BUY IT AT THE GOOD GUYS! Can you believe their service center tried to tell me they couldn't overnight my parts because the FAA wouldn't let them, which of course was an outright lie. I had already spoken to UPS and Fedex who said they were currently delivering overnight packages. When I told them that they then tried blaming Mitsubishi, but as my warranty was with the Good Guys that info. was also wrong.

I really thing that I made the right choice on buying this tv. I searched long and hard I came within inches of buying a Toshiba 43 however when I went to the store for the fourth time and sat down and found a salesman that really knew his stuff Hands down the Mits came out on top. There are alot of choices out there, and you can really get confused. Believe me this thing is great..........

Weakness:

Terrible line doubler (jaggies abound), poor craftsmanship, settings are per-input, Some settings lost in brownouts

This is an update to my previous review. Please read it for additional (and my positive feedback).

I've lived with this set for a few more months now and I've got serious buyers remorse. I URGE anyone who is considering buying a Mitsubishi projection TV (including the new *07 & *57 series) to BUY SOMETHING ELSE! Buy one of the new Sony 16:9 RPTV's coming out this fall (http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/generic/television/hiscan1080iprojectiontelevisions/index.shtml) instead. Sony's DRC is as good as a high priced external line doubler and it is included in the purchase price. You should also consider Pioneer Elite's which are great, but still may require a line doubler. However, don't buy a Mitsubishi or else you'll be very dissapointed within 6 months.

The picture quaility seems great when viewing it in the store, but when you get it home and are watching non-progressive scan DVD inputs and cable or DSS you'll discover this thing stinks. You'll see jaggies on detailed things like hay, grass, window sills, etc...

You are also likely to see things like a half-moon light reflection from the interior of the case when looking at a solid black image because this set was not finished properly on the interior. This distracting defect will prevent you from calibrating your set for black because the SMPTE bars will be obscured by this defect.

I've already had to return one of these sets, and now I'm having a hard time trying to get this lemon fixed.

Don't just take my word for it. Visit http://www.hometheaterspot.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Mitsubishi&number=10&DaysPrune=1000&LastLogin= and see stories from others (both good and bad).

Gosh, how I wish I would have waited a few more months so I could have bought a Sony widescreen (or just paid the extra for an Elite)! Don't make the same mistake I made!
