Strength:

Excellent picture, DVD playback quality is excellent

Weakness:

Magic Focus, crappy remote,

I finally decided to bite the bullet and get a HDTV. I looked at Mitsubishi Diamond Series, Hitachi 53SX12B, and Toshiba. For the money and picture, I thought this was the best choice. I'm anxious to see the performance when I purchase a HD Satelite Receiver. My only complaint is that I wish the cabinet would have been more appealing. It looks real cheesy, but guess what? I'm looking at the screen most of the time anyway!!!!

Strength:

Brightest, clearest picture of all units researched.

Weakness:

Non-Dolby audio

I have been looking at Widescreen HDTV units for the last year and kept returning to the Hitachi brand for the best visual experience. I selected the UWX model over the SWX because I will handle all of the sound in my Receiver/Switch (purchased with the $1000 savings). The only other differences (6 versus 5 lens, and the enhanced convergence system) make very little difference.

Strength:

This TV is AWESOME! Picture is FANTASTIC. Controls I was used to since all the Hit HDTVs use same remote! Set up is easy peasy, basically plug and play after you adjust teh contrast and brightness to BELOW 50!

Weakness:

Magic Focus does not do a good job at the far corners. Youll have to go to DCAM mode and use the manual convergence to tweak it.

I paid $3885 CDN. WOW! What a deal! Retail on it was $4899 CDN but they gave me a deal because I hated my other 2 so much and then my store does a 30 day pay protector and so when Hitachi slashed the price on it this week I got it for the above price! Almost 20% off. Great TV. Youll have to get used to the Smooth Wide and Full version to watch movies on cause they are not 100% accurate they have minor compression. The blacks are pretty decent though and you dont get much bleed of colours on dark scenes.

Overall I love this set and would recommend it to anyone who wants to jump on into the HDTV WideScreen market.

Strength:

Vivid Picture

Weakness:

On screen menu a bit confusing

I must have been on line behind Andrew, and I echo his comments about this unit. The 61" Model was also on display at the store and that unit has the sixth lens, yet I saw no big difference in the picture quality over the 53", and certainly not enough to merit the hefty boost in the price tag, although part of that extra cost for the 53S model is in the sound system. This unit simply outshined every other TV in the house for picture quality. This is widescreen TV at its best! If you have no room for your own center channel speaker for surround sound, then the 53/61SWX10B might be for you, as it has its own center channel speaker built in as well as right and left speakers. If you've got your own surround sound system, the 53UWX is all you need.

Strength:

bright picture

Weakness:

not good with cable viewing..

bought this after research and reading reviews..dvd's look great and give value for money..not satisfied with the picture I get with cable..wonder if anyine can suggest if using different cable connection wires can be helpful..eg using monster with the DVD was what made the pic fabulous..audio does leave a lot to be desired for and makes a home theatre system a necessity to do justice to the picture quality..

Great Picture, great price

Weakness:

Other peoples reviews?

I just bought this set on December 31, 2001 and I think I got it at a great price. 3599.00 Canadian witha bonus CD player tossed in. Not the greatest CD player but FREE nonetheless ! Add in the Aero Points as well as Air Miles from Amex and this deal looks even better.I agreed with the salesman that purchasing the extended service plan was a good idea at 469.00 for 6 years. I found out that an ISF certified technician for colour and convergence adjustment costs 400.00 a pop and is not necessarily covered by the oem warranty. This will be a great deal as well after 1 service call for convergence.

Strength:

Great picture with dvd

Weakness:

magic focus dosen't do anything

I give this big screen an {A } with dvds
I give an {A} with HDTV
I give an {D} with cable
I give an {C+} with satilite
I give an {F} with sound
overall this is a great big screen if you have a surround system for your sound and you watch lots of dvd's, but if your using it for regular tv the picture sucks unless your
20 feet or more away from the set....

P.S.
If anyone knows another way to fosus this set other than magic focus please tell me how e-mail alicia1@pacbell.net
