Strength:

As a hi-fi salesman, I've heard quite a few subwoofers. After hearing the HGS 15, I knew that I had to have one. We have tested down to 15hz in my living room. There is no other sub within reasonable dollars that will come anywhere close to the performance of this monster. During the opening scene of Toy Story II, this is the only sub that will not distort.

Weakness:

The cabinet is made of 5/8" MDF and rrings a little. I'm building a 1"medite enclosure that will house two of these suckers. Look out.

In my opinion, the best sub on the market. Every time I listen to it the hairs on my neck stand up. Will not distort, and will impress all who hear it. I wish that Velodyne would build a little better cabinet.

Similar Products Used:

mk 350/5000 (these are really pathetic examples of subwoofers, they aren't efficient below about 30hz, and distort really easily) REL Studio, Strata, Storm (very accurate, dont get very loud, don't go nearly as deep as Velodyne), BW asw 4000, asw 3000 (louder than Velodyne, but not anywhere near to the tight perfect quality of Velo-bass.)

Strength:

Deep base, I mean really deep base

Weakness:

Value, slow upper base

Check the construction of your residence, make sure all the breakable knickknacks are glued down, and warn the neighbors, because this subwoofer goes low and loud. This is a pricey subwoofer, but the cabinet finish is beautiful, the features are numerous, and the base is outstanding. The unit is best when the crossover is set lower than 80htz, more like 60 or 50. Further, I think this is better for movies than music. But if you pop in Saving Private Ryan DVD, and you find your foundation cracks, picture frames break, or police come to warn you about the noise, don't blame me. You have been warned.

Strength:

Tight, deep, clear and occasionally bone crushing

Weakness:

Occasional rumble..trying to track it down

I checked out the Servo 15 and the Sunfire. Sunfire great for movies, not so good for music. Paradigm good for music, not so good for movies seems a bit loose for bone crushing. HGS 15 great for movie, tight, pushes a lot of air, keeps blowing out lightbulbs on recessed fixtures and is surprisingly good on music.

I am using Anthem preamp for the crossover. Think it would be better to run full signla and let the sub do the crossover.

I am running Paradign Reference 100 in front, 20's in rear and CC center.

This is a serious system. The sub actually REEEEEAAAAAALLLYYYY sucked when I got it. Experience with the Paradigms tought me that good things are worth waiting for. This sub needs quite a bit of time, and is a totally different animal after some time. There is an occasional rumble which sound hauntingly like a feedback rumble (correction). I am trying to track it down, may be a function of the preamp. Very few and far between.

Uhhhhh....buy one

Strength:

Deep, clean, and powerful bass, easy integration with main speakers, beautiful finish

Weakness:

Slight hum, weight

I'm using a pair of these subs for home theather which is situated in a large living room(20' by 30'.) They filled the room with all the clean bass one can hope for. They are extremely low distortion subs which sound natural with all types of programs, music or home theather. As with all subwoofers, they blend more easily with fuller range main speakers. There is a slight hum which may brother some people, but its easily dismissed(like tape hiss.) Like all stereo components, they benefit from vibration isolation. I'm using Brightstar with excellent results.

This is the finest sub that I have ever seen or heard. The black lacquered cabinet is flawless. There are enough adjustments to keep you busy for a long time fine tuning this baby. I am using it in a home theater where the room is approx 25x15. This is bass that you can feel and experience. Great manual, great customer service dept., and great packaging. I was worried about having this sub shipped from 2000 miles away, but it arrived double boxed and in Velodyne's heavy duty packaging. I cannot imagine anything better.

In response to United Audio (now part of Tweeter), They were changing the line of subwoofers they were handling and just getting rid of their inventory (right place right time). They are located in several Chicago suburbs. They SOLD out quickly. Wish I would have bought their inventory myself, could have sold the HGS15's & 18's all day. Great sub's

Strength:

Power(1250 Watts,3000Watts peak), Exceptional speed, Earth-moving sub-sonic effects and very musical. Not to mention the beautiful glossy black finish(it's a shame you have to put it in a corner)

Weakness:

Haven't found one (well maybe one, it's expensive)

For selfish reasons I was willing to spend whatever it cost to get the best sub I could afford. And the HGS-15 was the winner by far. I've heard the Paradigm Servo 15s, the M&Ks, the B&Ws and the likes and there was no comparison. This sub is scary. If you get a chance to put it to work, it will literally scare you to a point where you're asking yourself if the house can take it. It will move the furniture your sitting on and then when your listening to music, it's very dynamic and blends invisibly with my mains. Talk about blending, when you have a superb sub, it will take your mains to another level. I'm currently running B&W Nautilus 805s and with the HGS-15s, in my opinion, the sound I get is close to the N801s or N802s (3-6K a pair). I'm just esctatic that I can reach this level of Hi Fi at the fraction of the cost. I would recommend this sub to anyone in a heart beat!!

Strength:

WOW! What a subwoofer. Simply the depth of the bass, the accuracy of it and it's speed in transients make it incredible!

Weakness:

Weight, not being able to showcase this beauty!

Sunfire what? Gimme a break, they sound like junk. This thing is awesome, and no, I did not go take it for a test drive, I actually own one of these. People, you cannot just drool over Hi-FI like cars. You gotta take it home and live with it. Everything about this sub is beautiful (except it's hulking mass)- the construction, the cabinet, the quality and volume of sound that it produces. I used to think that the M&K MX5000 was nirvana. I have since changed my mind. The HGS-18 is needs about twice the room size as the 15, so if you have a smaller area, the 15 is the way to go. This sub is worth every single penny that you are going to have to pay for it (and it will cost you a prodigious quantity of pennies!)

Strength:

Phenomenally powerful bass (1250 Watts) with ultra-low (0.5%) distortion.

Weakness:

Nothing weak about this baby.

The super-powerful servo keeps the distortion to an incredibly low level while putting out an amazing amount of bass energy. This monster can pin you to the wall! This unit produces the cleanest low-bass I've heard at unbelievably high power levels. The sheer power makes all the difference to movie soundtracks, and the purity of sound means that it excels on music also.

The black lacquered cabinet is gorgeous, by the way. The 15" size is perfect for mounting in the bottom of a standard equipment rack. Also it has every conceivable control, 3 choices of inputs (speaker-level, line-level, and balanced XLR), and an infrared remote.

I tried the Sunfire, which puts out plenty of beef but sounds very dirty compared to the big Velo.
