Strength:

When it works right it sounded alright but not worth the price at all.

Weakness:

Paper cone, foam surround, cheaply built, customer service, magnet not secured properly.

The reviews about this on this site must of been written by velodyne employees. I got this sub expecting what I read here and was disappointed big time. First it is not powerful enough, secondly if it were it could'nt handle the power. My sub started making a bad vibration noise after two weeks, and when I called velodyne they said since I bought it off the net they don't honor warranties, also they said they din't pay for shipping either way even when it is under warranty- no matter where you bought it. This is by far the worst customer service I have ever dealt with, followed by the rudest know it alls answering the phones. I have a sony wx-700 that's better than the velodyne and cost 1/3 as much.

Strength:

Deep, powerful, great pricing right now.

Weakness:

A little bigger than I wanted for my room, but worth the floor real estate (and gripes from the wife).

Great subwoofer! They must be on some sort of closeout - I have had my eye on this sub for a while at Circuit City. It is very powerful and clean, with plenty of punch for movie soundtracks. I run the sub direct and let my new Denon 3805 handle the crossover for the sub. I have Boston towers and rears so looked at their subs - Velodyne has them beat hands down.

Strength:

Plenty of bass, very loud and tight. Best sub under a 1000, at only a fraction of the price. Has plenty of control for tuning it in with your other speakers.

Weakness:

none

I just bought this subwoofer and this is a hard hitting sub. I did some research on this sub and it sounded like the best sub for the price. This sub blends in perfect with my Klipsch speakers. I highly reccomend this subwoofer. This sub is not for people with small rooms. My room is about 14x20. I have listened to paradigm pdr 12,pw 2200 and m&k 8" sub. The velodyne held its own and then some. You will not be disappointed this sub has deep, clean, tight, and loud bass!

Strength:

Very powerful lows Great audio reproduction quality Wonderful value

Weakness:

none as of yet

I have had the CHT 12 for about 4 months and this sub continues to astonish me the longer I have it. Now that I have "worked it in", the depths it will go to with clarity are amazing. The previous sub I had was a 10", Paradigm PDR 10, were as the CHT 12 is a 12". There is really no comparison in audio quality, and depth of bass reproduction between the two, be it in home theatre or regular music. This not ment to slight Paradigm product in anyway, they are and continue to be a superior speaker manufacturer. The CHT 12 has really filled my home theatre area and I am glad to say that it is a great performer, and even a better value.

Strength:

Deep quality bass and abundant reserves of power

Weakness:

Vinyl laminate could be more wood friendly

I never owned a sub by Velodyne, there reputation is quite good and elaborate. I purchased it after my Mission 700ASi was damaged in shipping when I moved (internal cracking and rattling after the move), try to get the movers to accept responsiblity, getting blood from a stone would be easier. Anyways, the set-up was easy and I was suprised at the musical abilities of this sub, not to mention the home theatre quality and abundant punch. The vinyl finish could be better, though fit and finish are well done, would be better with a wood laminate, but all in all the quality and depth of the bass make up for appearance short comings. I also tested the Paradigm PS1200, which is also one heck of a performer, but in the end I chose the Velodyne, just a personal preference. Velodyne has made a believer out of me, specialize, in one thing and do it well, Velodyne certainly has. Im a believer!!

Strength:

small form factor

Weakness:

UGLY, cheap looking, 2 ft power cord, weak, boomy bass

Picked up one of these to replace an Adire Shiva that had to go back in the car. What a mistake! Bass was weak so I moved it closer to a corner. BOOMY. This thing is nasty! Replaced with an Infinty Alpha sub for less price! The Alpha smokes it!

Strength:

Plays VERY loud and Very deep BASS. Is great for music and movies. Not too big. Nice little manual.

Weakness:

Not as small or as good looking as some more expensive models - is that a weakness

I finally gave in and bought a sub for my H/T setup. I looked at Def. Tech., Boston and Polk. I liked the Def. Tech. for its size and its pretty, but expensive. The Velodyne gave me all I could want in a sub. It puts out more bass than I can stand if turned up too much - powerful. I reach my limits before the sub runs out of steam...it will shake your house, the WHOLE house if you let it. This unit sounds very good in music and movies but I do wish there were a more uniform level to CD bass tracks, turn it up for one CD and turn it down for another - Oh well. I am sure there are better subs available for more money but I am VERY happy with the CHT-12. I think this sub would be great for 90% plus of the people.

Strength:

Tons of bass, very well controlled, can be spft and subtle as well as loud and strong. Bass is tight, no splats even at volumes that made my other sub sound like a whoopee cushion.

Weakness:

It will show you where every loose piece of glass or metal is in your house... Makes my front door shake like the glass is going to rocket out of it, and my fireplace utensils hop around.... No distortion from the sub, mind you, but lots of rattles from the house...

Replacing (embarrassed to admit it...) a JBL PSW-D112, which I purchased before reading reviews. Using an Onkyo TXNR801 receiver, Wharfedale Valdus 400 front speakers, Infinity Reference rears and center (rears being replaced with Polk RTi38's) and an Infinity PS-8 sub for rear fill. First off all, this thing is MUCH smaller than my JBL, which is nice. Second, it's 1000X better. The bass is low and strong with no cracks or pops. It's LOW too, it picks up lows that my JBL didn't even see, and my ears give out long before the Velodyne cuts out (the JBL would SPLAT HORRIBLY even at moderate volume). Played everything from Hip-Hop (Outkast "I Like the Way You Move", great lows) to folk/country to rock and it all held up. The JBL would fall apart with strong bass in music like dance and hip-hop, but not hte Velodyne! For movies I played Pirates of the Carabbean and some LOTR and everything was beautiful! Noticed that the Velodyne is magic even at more subtle volumes, like filling in the sounds of a knock on a door without overpowing it. The JBL was either silent or falling all over itself, the Velodyne is very capable of being subtle as well as thunderous. Even at very low volumes it can be subtle and add fill to any movie or music. Not all subs are good at both very loud AND very soft fills, but this one is! Make sure you split the LFE signal into 2 RCA inputs as the manual suggests, without it you lose 1/2 your volume. The porting is in the front, which made me worry about "Boominess" but it only gets a little boom around 80Hz where I have it currently and I'm sure I can either modify placement, phase, or kill it with the crossovers. The THX crossover is 80Hz, and I have the Velodyne's crossover turned off, but I may turn it back on and cross it over at around 60Hz since that seems to be the real sweetspot.

Strength:

Deep bass, tons of power this thing is a tank.

Weakness:

The rubber feet you have to put on. no sound weaknesses what so ever.

I bought the velodyne sub to replace my infinity bu120, the infinity sounded ok, but i wanted more,, i did a lot of research and chose the velodyne and let me say i am very glad i did. When i first got it i calibrated it using several calibration dvds, and then located the best spot to put it in. After that i put in the most bass heavy dvd i have which is the horrible movie of star wars 2... it sounded amazing and handled all the deep bass, then i spent 2 hours of just watching clips of movies from lord of the rings 1 & 2 and several others... i cant beleive how it handles the power. the stronger the signal the stronger the bass.. i havent overdriven it yet,, and i have it cranked.. this thing is awesome.

Strength:

Great bass which is protected from overdrive. Good sub for music as well.

Weakness:

Difficult to set-up. Can sound really bad if you don't get it right.

I had a Polk PSW350 before this but it keep overdriving (cracking sound) so I got rid of it. The Velodyne produces more articulate bass in music and for movies is also better than the Polk and it appears that you cannot overdrive it. It took a bit to get it set-up correctly though. When I first connected it I thought it sounded terrible. Then I fooled with the crossover on the back, boosted the signal from my receiver +8 DB and connected it using both right and left LFE inputs. Also moving it to the correct location in my room improved the sound immensely. I am very happy with it. Overall, all frequencies coming from all speakers seem to be clearer and more detailed. The sub integrates so it sounds like even the lowest frequencies are coming from the other speakers and not the sub. I listen to a lot of DVD-A and SACD and these formats have improved as well. Not a perfect product but then nothing is at this price level. It's installed in a room 13 by 18 feet.
