Strength:

Good value even if you paid $250. Great sound. Brings action movies to life.

Weakness:

Brings kids to life during action movies(after their bedtime). Really could use a power off.

I saw the bad reviews but still took a chance because of the excellent price. My bid plus shipping total would have been $129, but I had a credit with Ubid for some bookshelf speakers they screwed up on. So I took it at $119, and it feels like I stole it. My unit does have the LFE switch, but admittedly a true power on/off would be better. I don't push too hard on it so I just connected it to the switched ac output from my receiver. My unit does produce a hum like that of other reveiwers but I cannot detect it unless I lean over the port to listen. I used the highest quality monster sub-cable I could get locally and positioned it about 5 feet away from the rest of my equipment to further reduce any stray RF. To further comment on the other reviews, I have no serious concerns about pops or digital gurgles. It does make a slight pop sound when my receiver switches from one coded signal to another, but this doesn't strike me as a flaw (i.e. if I switch a DVD from Dolby 5.1 to DTS, or when switching from VHS to DVD). My main objective when purchasing was to complete my home theater, but I have found it very nice with a lot of types of music. I like live CD's, and I use the PB10 to accompany without any real complaints. Seems very tight and smooth for my uses. I did not expect it to be THXultra or anything magnificent, but it does perform much better than I thought. My listening area is about 11'X16', and it can really push you out if you make it. If you want an new dimension added to your movies, I say go for it. Value wise, I could not complain if it keels over after 2 years. If it holds up over time, I would expect it to cost $300. At $250 or less I say it is a good deal. I do not do a lot of classical or jazz, so I can't really comment on the musical/harmonal properties in those areas, but with my mix of classic/modern/light rock and some old folk, I say it really performs very well I am going with 5 stars because it really has exceede my expectations. It also has a good look that blends well with my other black components even though this is the only JBL product that I own. This could be a drawback if you were trying to go with a wood grain color.

Strength:

Great deep lows, price, quality, five-year warranty, aesthetics.

Weakness:

None I can think of.

I am very surprised of the bad reviews the PB-10 has received. I couldn't be happier. My HT system consists of; Receiver: Onkyo TX-DS696 DVD Player: Onkyo Integra DSP-5.2 Center: JBL N-Center Front: JBL N38's Sub: JBL PB-10 Surrounds: JBL N24's The whole system is matched very well. My Product model year is actually 2002 I do have an on/off switch. There is the absolute faintest hum when the sub is inactive but you need to literarily have your pressed up against the sub. I have noticed it muddle up some of the lows, and occasionally sound a little clunky, but in general I am very satisfied. A great quality product for a great affordable price. Seriously try one out; perhaps you will very pleasantly surprised. I was. Necessary addition to any HT system.

Strength:

Price and sound (what else do we want from a Sub?). Well done JBL!

Weakness:

none

First of all a big thanks to poohoppa, for the tip about the model. Since I live in manhattan, I went to J&R and pick it up by myself, so I had the chance to check the year of the model on the box: must be 2001 for the new model (on off switch and no hum... just like poohoppa said). It''s a nice sub, just play with the levels and switches to get the best results: also find the best position in the room...and that''s very very important. I placed my unit in the corner, to the opposite wall where the main speakers are (JBL S310) and it sound GREAT. I feel the bass better using the speakers connection, maybe because the sub interact well with the 310... but this is only my opinion... a line connection to the subwoofer out of the receiver should be better.

Strength:

Sound quality, no hum, Lfe switch, Leds that tell if the sub is on or off, power ( 150 watts )

Weakness:

None yet.

First, 489 $ is in canadian dollars, wich makes about 290 $ in US$. This sub is really great. Mine doesn''t have an On/Off switch and there is absolutely no hum ( unlike some said ) Everything''s perfect. It provide the true deep bass that I expected. I listen to rock music and it gives me the perfect bass drum sound I want. Electric bass and synthetic bass sound great as well. For H/T, it really gives some great explosions and sounds like that. It''s also the less expensive that I found for a 150 watts.

Hum, No On/Off (old version) No grill on driver

I expected new version, which has on/off swith and no hum. You can download pdf owner''s manual(2001) from jbl and new OM shows on/off switch on PB10. Old version does have small hum. I think JBL has good marketing team, which respond quickly with feedback from customers. So they fixed two complaints with new version. JandR is free shipping, but they ship both new version and old version. So be sure to receive a new version when ordering from them. I got old one and will exchange or refund for a new version(2001 printed on box). etronics seems to ship new version.

Strength:

Great Sound Easy hookup with LFE

Weakness:

None

This thing rocks! I had the opportunity to purchase mine at discount through a distributor and was a little skeptic because of the price. I ended up looking at a lot of different subs and after reading the reviews of this one I had to get it. This has great reviews and that''s because it is awesome. I have not heard one buzz, hum or pop out of this thing ever and it is always on! I have mine hooked up to a Harman Kardan AVR 310 with Klipsch surrounds and in my condo it sounds great.

Strength:

deep sound no pops or hum

Weakness:

size meddling neighbors non-audio fiancee

I just plugged her in yesterday and I am hooked! I have it coupled with a pair of cambridge soundworks M80 speakers and I couldn''t be happier. I, like the new posts, have an on/off switch. There is also no hum so I guess I''m one of the lucky ones. The bass is a window cracker all right! I compared to a csw basscube12 and it blows that away! It''s a little bigger than I thought and takes up substantial space in my room. It will be hard to explain this one to my fiancee when she gets back from her business trip. Maybe I''ll put a vase of flowers on it to throw her off. But, if the neighbors don''t kill me in my apartment building I should be able to enjoy for years to come.

Strength:

Shakes the floor Rattles things on the walls Goes well with N28!

Weakness:

If you sleep with this sub the barely audible hum might drive you crazy if you hate electric hums while you are trying to sleep. I placed this speaker in a corner and the sound bounced around a little and the beat was off time. I moved the sub out of the corner and put it beside my N28s and it sounded perfect.

This speaker does have a quiet hum if you were to stick your ear in or around the port. However, this slight inconvenience doesn''t overway its excellent representaion of the footsteps of dinosaurs or explosions. It also kicks ass at music I had to turn the crossover all the way up because of my N28s but they sound great! The port really allows this 10" to move. Excellent bass kick on music. Wonderful explosions. Recomended for music or movies.
