Strength:

Loud room filling bass!! Supplies the kind of bass you need with DVD. Good for music too.

Weakness:

Somewhat muddy(AN EASY FIX!!!KEEP READING!!) Also a little directional . (Just take your time placing the sub. Make sure you have enough cable length to experiment with different locations around the room!! )

I bought this sub at Mercata thanks to all of these reviews. Got it for 182.00 shipped!! Saved about two hundred bucks. All I can say is for that price you cannot go wrong with this purchase. I have infinity rs5's in the front and I wanted to match my system so I read the reviews for the bu80 but decided I wanted THUNDEROUS BASS for home theater. Man I made the right choice. This thing rocks the whole house!!! I don't know what all of the fuss about the humming is though!! I was seriously considering not buying the sub because so many people complained of the problem. There was even a few complaints about radio frequencies being picked up!!! As far as the hum goes, the only way that little amount of noise would bother me is if it was in my bedroom somewhere near my pillow!!! It isn't THAT bad! The bass was a little muddy, so I tweaked the sub a little bit. THIS WILL DEFINITELY HELP, SO PAY ATTENTION!!! If you do not have any at home go buy some!! Two pairs of THICK wool socks. 1 pair stuffed in each port, and this sub sounds fantastic!!!! I couldn't believe how much tighter it made the bass!!! Definitely a MUST with this sub. I didn't spend alot of money on monster cables. I went to radio shack and connected the sub to my receiver with GOLDseries shielded audio cables , and I also needed a Gold audio Y-CABLE.each were 12.99. No interference and about as clear a signal as I think your going to get. I have the sub placed about eleven feet away from my receiver(behind the couch) and plugged directly into the wall. I dont know if this makes a difference or not but the hum that I hear is not that loud and it's sure not picking up any radio stations! DVD movies sound unbelievable!! Better than I imagined!! Music is good too but you will probably have to play with the volume of the sub between music and movies. All in all I am very happy! I guess you could tell by the length of my review. Thanx to all of you for pointing me in the right direction and thanx to Mercata for the right price!! 4*****, because nothing is perfect.

Strength:

cost, relatively small size for the woofer size

Weakness:

not very clean

I also get this sub from mercata.com after I read someone posted a message about mercata.com.

For the price from the mercata.com, this sub is a great one. I have noticed Hummmm just as others noticed when I was connecting by speaker level input, since I got my pioneer D508 receiver, I connected sub level out on the receiver and line level input on the sub. The hummmm has gone, so I am happy about that. I think the speaker wire was not shilded.

For movie, this sub is very good, although I have to set the volume at the middle position. For music, the sub is not very musical. Compare to the price from mercata.com, you have to pay at least twice for any other sub with 12" woofer and 150 watts amp. I have listened Klipsch KSW-12 sub, which has 105 watts amp and 12" woofer, that sub sounds better than 150 watts BU-120, that sub will cost at least $350 I can found.

So this sub is good choice for anyone with tight budget or do not want to spend a lot on home speakers. If you have to pay more than $359, there are better subs around $400

Strength:

Cost, sound quality, signal strength.

Weakness:

Noticable Hum when left powered on in stand-by mode, no power switch on the unit.

Other reviews of this product on this and other websites assisted in my purchasing decision to buy this particular model subwoofer from www.mercata.com. I ended up paying a total $160 for the subwoofer, which lists (retail) between $299 and $349.
I have been tracking the Infinity BU series of subwoofer for several years, and at one time almost bought a BU-80 but thought I'd rather wait and buy a more permanent addition to my sound system as I felt the BU-80 was underpowered.
I invisioned a complementaty component to the paradigm set of speakers I've collected over the years, Monitor 3s, Titans, and a C70 for center surround. The BU-120 delivers, and for an incredible cost (the way I came about it).
I will say I wasn't willing to spend the retail amount for this subwoofer, because at that price range I could afford to invest in a Bose system, or in a more powerful subwoofer from any number of other manufacturers.
The reviews on this site were right on about this model ... when you boil them all down to a consensus view. An excellent quality subwoofer with some minor drawbacks ... which melt away if you tip the scales by procuring the piece at a bargain basement price.
The drawbacks are minor. There is a noticeable hum from the subwoofer when it's powered on in stand-by mode (i.e. receiving no signal), and there isn't a built in power switch. Both are overcome rather easily by plugging it into a surge protector with an on/off switch. Who doesn't do that with their electronic equipment these days anyway? The other comment mentioned in the reviews of note is the rear port. This model has two rear ports, which may need to be plugged up with a towel, or t-shirt to bring balance to the base in your room. The amplified driver, and the 12 inch woofer are more than adequate for CDs, DTS, and Dolby Digital Surround sound. I have mine set-up in a home theatre room basically 16X22. When the woofer is receiving a signal, I notice no hum in the equipment. Just solid wall-rattling base.
I would recommend this subwoofer to anyone who wants an affordable, and reliable component in their sound system. The reality being that if you're investing thousands of dollars in your sound system you wouldn't be investigating this model.
If you're on a more reasonable budget, and want to add some punch to your set-up you can't go wrong with this one.
I did note in one review a customer complained to Infinity about the hum, and Infinity replaced the unit. A great price, a reliable, and effective piece of equipment, and great customer service. The literature lists a one year all parts/labor for electronic components, and a five year parts/labor for all loudspeaker components.
I should also mention weight of the unit, as most will notice some discrepancies on the other reviews. Other reviewers listed this as a 50 lb. subwoofer. The manufacturer documents list it as 43 lbs., and the UPS shipping label on the box that arrived at my house lists it as 39 lbs.. Weight does matter. Even at 39 lbs. this subwoofer delivers. So, what are you waiting for?

After spending the obligatory couple of hours driving a friend crazy in order to find the sweet spot in my listening room with the proper volume and crosover point, this is one sweet sounding sub in the 300-350 dollar range. I like many others picked this sub up at mercata.com for under 200 dollars and consider it an absolute steal. Very happy. I can hear a hum if I have my head within a foot or two of the ports on the sub with the reciver off and no other noise in the room, but as soon as I move away it is inaudible, no big deal IMO since I can't hear it unless I am on the floor next to the sub and no music is playing.

Strength:

Handles everything my 100w Sony receiver can throw at it.

Weakness:

Quiet electrical hum all the time, no power on/off.

I've read all the complaints about the amp blowing up, but have been fortunate that I haven't experienced this. I don't like the loud pop you get when you unplug the input or the power, but so far (jinx) this hasn't damaged anything. I have found this sub to perform very well with home theater 5.1 audio, but it could do better with music alone. When placed on carpet it was a little bit muddy. I bought some black hard shelving and sat the sub on top, and now it appears to be a lot tighter. For the money I would say that I am very happy with it, but if I had a couple hundred extra to blow I would have gone with Klipsch. I think the receiver you have makes the most difference though, and will make any sub perform better.

Weakness:

Early death, constant hum, a little muddy

An acceptable performer, but for that humming! Now that it's dead, I miss the hum. Maybe I'll shoot it like the other guy did, or maybe I'll make one attempt at replacing the blown cap (literally blown up!). I, like many, expected more from Infinity - maybe a replacement for an obviously bad design or a credit towards another product purchase?

Strength:

BOOMING wallshaking performance WHEN working.

Weakness:

Buzz, buzz, humm, humm, etc......
Very short life span...

After many months of researching sub woofers I decided to go with this unit because of great reviews (at the time of purchase 2 years ago). Big, heavy SOB that does deliver awesome sound when, A BIG WHEN, working properly. The buzzing and humming was sooooo distracting and annoying. The unit died on me about 6 months ago. The thing is, it happened when the entertainment system was not on. I came home from work and the stench of fried electronics the filled the house about knocked me out. Also a very very loud buzzing sound. Poor dog had to put up with that for who knows how long.

Placed calls into Infinity support, even with the help of the distributor who sold it to me, only to be placed on hold and ignored over and over again. From reading everyone else's reviews, obviously Infinity has a huge quality control void. This product definately should have been recalled. Now I am out of $350 plus have to buy a new sub.

In short, unless you can get this cheaply made, disposable piece of junkyard trash for less than $5.00 on E-BAY and purchase another brand as a backup for when this vaporizes on you, stay completely away.

Strength:

Great Sub for a HT, Good bass and no hum

Weakness:

A bit muddy on some tracks

This is a great sub and it is worth every penny I paid for it, I sold it to upgrade to the Boston the match my other speakers.
To the Guy who said that Klipsch has a 5-year warranty on their amps is incorrect, they do have a 5-year warranty on the driver and cabinet, only 1-year on the electronics. I use to work for a Boston/Klipsch dealer in college.

This is a great sub and worth the price, to those who bought at Ubid and Ebay, you really never know what you get buying refurbs and used... Brick and Mortar dealers are still the best.

Good Luck to all!

Strength:

Excellent value for the money, not too obtrusive, room filling sound

Weakness:

Humming sound(eliminated with a power strip), had to have the first one replaced

For $150.32 delivered, I cannot complain one bit. I did have a major problem with the first unit I received, it completely died after 3 days of usage! It was a big dilemma getting it serviced because it was purchased on-line. I took it to a Circuit City, after receiving authorization from Infinity, and had it serviced under warranty. Two days after getting the sub back it died again! This time I demanded a new unit and was promptly sent a replacement for the lemon. The new unit is performing brillantly so far. I gradually broke this one in by playing it a low volume for an extended number of hours, I don't know if it made a difference but the sub has been problem free so far.
The sub makes a tremendous when teamed with my Infinity SM-105's and Video One center channel. The bass more than compensates for the lack there of from my main channels. I am very pleased with the overall sound of my system and can attribute much of that to the sub. It may not be the best sub on the market, but for the price it cannot be beat.

Checked it out at Circuit City- significantly better bass response than the BU-80 and worth the $100 difference.
I was about to buy the BU-120 at CC for $339 ($60 cheaper than PC Richards here in the NYC area) until I saw a reference (here at audioreview.com) to www.mercata.com where through group-purchasing you can get it for $222 (as of 16:30 EST 01/03/00) and free UPS ground shipping. First time Mercata shoppers also get a $25 sign up credit that you can apply to your purchase. The Infinity BU-120 for under $200 is a down right steal!!!!!!!!
