Strength:

I have tinnitus and I''m pretty sure it''s from this sub (not a good thing for me, but...). Has handled many explosions, thundering, etc. and only very rare incidents of distortion.

Weakness:

Yes there is a constant hum. but I can only hear it when the room is very quiet and even then it''s barely noticeable.

I guess I''m one of the lucky ones! I''ve been enjoying this sub for over two years now and haven''t had a single problem. Maybe it''s because I followed the advice of the salesman at the store: Volume level never has to be more then 50%. I always assumed there was no power switch because expensive audio equipment lasts longer if they don''t have to experience the power surge every time they get turned on. I have the phase switch set at 0; crossover at 40 to 50%(any more than that causes distortion); volume never more than 60%; RCA plugs from reciever; and it''s plugged into a surge suppresser. It was bought as part of a surround speaker system: four sattelites US-1, and Center CC-1 all Infinity of course. It''s driven by a Yamaha HTR 5150 and that volume level is never more than 40%. Music sounds fine but it''s the 5.1 and DTS that really cranks. I''ve heard that the "Matrix" is a movie that has taken its toll on many a subwoofer. That was one of the first DVD''s we bought. The Hotel lobby shootout and the Helicopter crashing into the building have been played more than 20 times. The walls shake, my ears hurt and neighbors complain. A few tips: Volume levels never more than mentioned above. Sub sits on a hardwood chess board on the carpet (seems to throw the lows out more easily). Power is always on (on all electronic components except TV). If you''re doing all the above and are still experiencing breakdowns, then I guess I am just lucky. But from my experience I''d recomend this sub to anyone.

Strength:

Good sub, nice bass, affordable, and has the Infinity name.

Weakness:

Gee, I wonder? Machine gun, pulsating bass, and dozes of people with the same problem. Hum, hum, hum, click, pop, smolder. COULDN''''T HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER!

When this sub worked, it worked well. It was great for music, and certainly great for movies. Then I had the SAME problem as everyone else did! It blew out in the beginning of last year, and I brought it to a local shop (now closed down) and paid 60 dollars to get it fixed. It worked for some time. Soon, the machine gun came, scared the life out of me. That pulsating punchy bass sound was annoying. Anyway, I didn''''t get it fixed for a long time, but now that I purchased a new Yamaha receiver, I was interested in replacing it, but felt like opening it! Saw a blown fuse, went to radio shack, replaced the fuse, then the machine gun awakened once more. Came to audioreview.com, looked it up, and guess what, you all have a new brother in the world of BU-120 pain. But, the best part is, I''''m holding the 50V capacitor in my hand! HAHAHAH! Honestly, I don''''t believe that fixing it again will guarantee it will always work, so now comes the time to replace. If anyone has anything interesting to tell me, please let me know.

Owned a JBL 10" 150-watt sub before this one. Both were taken care of, both suffered the same fate. Gee, what''''s the point of using different names, if you''''re going to use the same crappy parts.

I have had a bu-120 for 8 months. One night I started smelling something. Then I heard something that sounded like a machine gun. I pulled the plug quickly from the wall. I am so glad I was home or else my house might of burned to the ground. I saw all the reviews here and told my class about it. I took the sub to my advanced electronic class. Are class needs some more of these subs. We are going to try to figure out the problems with this sub and tell infinity about this. If anyone is going to throw their blown one away, or wants to help our class out, email me at Justinarmbruster02@hotmail.com. I am willing to pay shipping for these. thanks Justin

I read a review here earlier about this sub picking up signals from radio stations and could not believe it. Well last night while reading a book with my receiver off and my sub still plugged in I kept hearing this music. At first I thought it was my neighbor playing her stereo too loud. I finally tracked it down to my new subwoofer! Other than this problem I am pleased with the performance of this unit. It took a couple of nights of moving it around and tweeking the controls on both the sub and the receiver to get the sound I was looking for. If anyone has any simple suggestions on how to remedy this sub/radio problem please let me know. I just might have to take to a service center for repair.

Construction and hhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

Only having this subwoofer for just afew evenings I really can't give a fair evaluation on the sound quality of this unit yet. I need to do a lot of tweeking of the control settings and room placement. But my first impression of this unit as far as contruction was very disappointing. First of all the thing hums, and loud! I can here it across the room and doesn't matter where I plug it in at. I felt under the speaker and could actually feel the cone vibrating. Also while it was playing I felt underneath and could feel air coming out around the woofers mounting flange. I flipped it over to find the woofer mounting ring was not even against the enclosure. I had to tightened each screw about 5 turns to get it tight. Even after tightening the screws there still was some leakage. I plan on using silicone to fix this problem. You would not expect such horrible assembly and construction from what is supposedly a quality company. I know a lot of you probably did what I done and looked at price and name. Infinity is selling a ton of these and other speakers to auction houses like Mercata.com (where I got mine for $189). My brother has basically the same system as mine only he bought the Advent AV550s ($250 from Ubid.com)and kicks the Bu-120's butt!!. The Advent has a 15" woofer and 250 watt sunfire amp and is well worth the few extra $'s. I use mine for home theater only (I use my Klipschorns for music, don't need no subwoofer)and the Bu-120 lacks the clean stomach pounding floor shaking bass the Advent offers. I still have some experimenting to do and may be expecting to much but for now I wish I would have spent a few extra dollars.

Strength:

Price, good sound.

Weakness:

no off switch, volume is in back

Only had this for a few days but it most definitely improved my home theatre setup. There is a slight hum, only detectable if I stick my ear about an inch away from the thing. Having listened to many others in and around the $300 to $400 price range I could not detect a hugh difference in sound. It seemed to sound almost the same as the JBL 10 inch. I got the BU-120 from Mercata for $177. Not bad with free shipping. I am still in the process of adjusting all the controls. I recommend this for anyone who is looking for a solid subwoofer who does not want to spend the $600 or more for one of those high-end subwoofers.

Strength:

Price, size

Weakness:

no big ones considering the price

I first purchased the above mentioned JBL sub from the Harman audio oulet, and it died in less than a week. I took it back and the only other comparable sub they had was the Infinity BU-120. I took it home not really knowing what to expect, and once I set it up and listened to it, honestly, it was much less powerful than the JBL, but smaller also. To be fair, the JBL has 100 more watts. So, after using this sub for over a month, mostly for home theater, I am quite pleased with it. I just read the recent posts about mercata selling this sub for about $150. I paid almost twice that. I'm going to check out mercata, and buy another one if I can get it for that cheap. In short, for the price this is a very good sub.

Strength:

Size, power, clean looks, simplistic hookup

Weakness:

Lack of power switch / remote-on switch, hum with no-load.

I bought this sub with the realization that many people were complaining about the so-called 'hum'. After experimenting, found that the hum is worse when there is no-load from a receiver. When playing, it's no noticable. I suspect that grounding plays a big part in this, and if the receiver were on the same ground as the sub (across the room), then things might be somewhat improved. Overall though, I'm impressed. For the $260 I paid, it's not a bad deal. It's quite clean down to ~30Hz, and it adds another dimension to your home theatre setup (The Matrix and Predator on DVD took on a whole new life with this this attached! - complements of the built-in 150W digital amplifer). I just wish Infinity (it its 'infinite' wisdom) would have added a separate power switch or remote-on feature so I wouldn't have to keep plugging it in and out of the wall.

Strength:

Weakness:

a little muddy, corrected

This is my second review for this sub espeacially about Hummm and muddy.

Muddiness has been corrected by completely stuff one port with folded tower suggested by another reviewer. Now, it is much clean and tight.

Humm happened when I used speaker level input. After I connected with Y adapter audio cable from radio shack (cheaper one, $6), there is no Humm what so ever. If you can get it for less than $300, it is still a good sub.
