Like most everybody else here, I bought these on ubid. I got a pair of the Modus 8, and a pair of the 1.6. One of the 1.6 speakers was damaged on receipt, dealing with ubid is a complete pain in the butt. To make a long story short, I've ended up with two Modus Eights and ONE Modus 1.6. I have read other reviews here that refer to a company called IGN. I have looked on the internet, but found no company that relates to audio equipment. Does anybody know how to contact them?

My thoughts on the Modus Eights echo much of what has already been said here. Currently, I'm using them with my pair of Infinity Reference rear speakers on a four year old 200 watt JVC dolby receiver. The system sounds fabulous.

I promised myself not to write any comment on any stereo equipment. But every time I listen to these speakers, I feel obligated to say at least a few words: they are great.

After suffering "brain damage" after an audiophile fever eight years ago, I am no longer serious about the quality of sounds but only listen to the spirit of the music. In fact I sold my Denon integrated amplifier, Rotel CD player and Dynaco towers long ago and kept only a simple Sony CD player and a classic Lafayette stereo receiver, with a set of headphones only. I was only semi-serious when looked around for a set of decent speakers, mainly for my wife because she wanted something to be seen and heard in our living room. In fact when I placed my bid on these speakers for $97 each ($234 for both including shipping), I said to myself these are just about right for what my wife wanted.

The speakers came, well packed. When I first touched the boxes, I was a bit concerned that these may even disappoint my wife because they are surprisingly light. Fifteen minutes later, I was speechless. These speakers are wonderful. Although they feel realistically like a sub $300 speakers due to so-so build quality, they sound like an upper $1000 speakers. Wonderful stereo image and stage. Clear and open. Base doesn't reach the very low-end of the spectrum but is very tight anf misses nearly nothing for Jazz and classic music listeners. If theses were available at retail for similar prices, no one would be able to sell anything else. uBid carries a lot a refurbished stuff (be watchful for refurbished electronic stuff! Technicians usually honestly believe a returned unit is perfect while there are in fact problems), but these speakers are brand new. Don't know what the future price for these speakers on uBid is going to be, but presently, you owe yourself to buy a set of these if you are shopping for speakers under $1,500.

The only problem: due to the unbelievable deal, it make shopping for other equipment very difficult.

Strength:

Price/Performance ratio, imaging, off axis response, very warm sound

Weakness:

Flimsy grills, boxes could be stronger, internals not too well sorted

I posted a review earlier, and just wanted to follow up.

While the speakers sound very good before, I have made a lot of changes. First, I replaced my crappy receiver with a Rotel 5x110 amp and a Citation 7.0 pre-amp. This alone made the speakers really come alive. Then I took the things apart...completely! I took the speakers out of the box, removed the crossover and all wiring, and pulled the sound deadening.

Then I put new wiring throughout (much higher quality stuff), put deflex panels on the back of the box, added some polyfill to the box, sealed around the woofers, and cut some particle board braces to size and glued them into the box for internal bracing.

Next I replaced my external speaker wires with some homemade speaker wires consisting of Cat5 networking cable. 24 strands of for the woofer and 16 strands for the tweeter. I bi-wired the speakers with this setup.

Now the sound is SOOOO much better it's unbelievable. Total cost for my upgrades (not counting the amp and pre) was about $100 and about 6-8 hours of my time. It was well worth it.

Clarity, tonal balance, and imaging of the speakers is in another class. If you all have the know-how, I strongly suggest doing some similar stuff to yours.

I should have given these speakers a 5 value and 4 overall before, and a 5 - 5 now. But I gave them a 5 - 5 before also...oh well.

Just added these as rear speakers with the Modus 1,6 and Modus center channel. Simply outstanding. You'll never do better than these at UBid prices. Don't miss out if you are considering them.

Strength:

clear highs, clear mids, and smooth bass; also can be found cheap on ubid.

Weakness:

none yet.

I got these speakers just today and i am very impressed with the quality sound i get from these. These speakers are a steal at 107 a piece at ubid. They sound better than speakers costing 5 times that. They are great for a home theater setup because of the revolving tweeter. These are speakers that i would buy for 400-500 a piece if i had to.

Strength:

Smooth, rich sound. Price, price, price.
Rotating tweeter.

Weakness:

Terrible manual--British I guess.

Bought these for $127/each from U-Bid based on reviews here.
There is nothing to say about these speakers except...
BUY THEM!!!

These are tight, high quality speakers which deliver rich, smooth base, and tight, tight high end sounds. A real work horse. These sound great w/both movies and music. I am driving them bi-amped w/a Rotel 5 by 100 set-up, with my center getting the final 100. A very smooth package.

The 360 degree rotating tweeter is a nice gimmick that actually works nicely in sound positioning. Even came with adjustable spikes.

Well for $260 shipped from ubid it is not even a steal. It is a grand robbery.
I beg to know what is the deal with w-dale so they decided to fire sale product of such quality.
Speakers looks great, turnable tweeter is a very nice feature, and they beat pair of Polks I had for while for $1700 hands down.
Buy it....
You do need a good sub with them.

Strength:

virtually invisible. Smooth, punchy bass.natural.

Weakness:

flimsy grilles. made in China.

Noticed something was wrong right away when the two boxes I received looked so totally different. Turns out I may have purchased the last available Modus ONE SIX at UBID. One of these speakers was a re-build. The Grille was pre-broken, the tweeter was glued down, and it had a blown lower driver. U-bid sent me straight to wharfedale who re-assured me that the flimsy grille problem was bad plastic. They are sending me a new driver along with a complementary center speaker for my troubles! These speakers are a steal for the price although they do tend to muddy a bit in the mid to low end when pushed really hard (particularly techno, or rap music). however, with normal volume and especially classical music, they outclass any loudspeaker I've heard.I still want to clarify the highs, but I always want for something. Jeff at wharfedale sez. ubid bought alot more modus 8's. get 'em.

Strength:

Invisible, warm, nice design

Weakness:

Made in China by children i'm sure. A bit too much plastic. Do I even have to mention the grilles?

Have to agree with Ryan Scott. Heres why. Thought I had a shot lower driver due to "popping" sound. When I replaced the Driver, same sound. Turns out the Port located below the low driver was loose, and when I removed it, Popping sound disappears. I also took the liberty of checking out the dampening material and found out the (inferior sounding) speakers' guts had shifted during shipping. Fixing this made a huge improvement! I'm not too impressed with the quality of workmanship that went into these speakers, but the overall design(isolating the drivers in their own seperate box's) is smart. I get the feeling that looks took precedence over quality in this case, but for the comparable price of Bose 301's there is no, I repeat no comparison. Oh, I have the One Six's by the way.

Strength:

Price, bass.

Weakness:

Everything else. Very cheap construction.

Initially excited about having many audiophile-like features such as rotatable doom tweeter and bi-wiring, I found the speakers are merely wannabes. Other than delivery good bass - sometimes over-powering, and usually not tight at all - there is nothing good to say about them. To many people the soundstage may appear to be very good but once you heard some real speakers then you'd know $300 won't get you very far in the world of good speakers. They do work quite well as rear surrounds.

Performance-wise they get 2 stars - but since they are dirty cheap I give them 3 overall.
