Strength:

Price! Sound, stereo imaging.

Weakness:

Flimsy speaker grilles. England's legendary speaker is now made in China.

At first I didn't like the sound AT ALL. Maybe it took 30 minutes for them to break in or maybe it just took my ears that long!

I expected them to be very sibilant and small sounding. I couldn't have been more wrong! The speakers are very warm and "round' sounding. The tweeters tend to become almost invisible at times. That's not really a bad thing, I'm glad they are not over emphasized. Smooth is the word here.

At first I just set them on top of my 20 inch tall Pinnacle speakers (which I unplugged to test the Wharfedales). I think I could have fooled someone into thinking that the Pinnacles were playing. The Wharfedales sound HUGE!

The stereo image they create is amazing as well. Very spatial. I wouldn't call these speakers all that accurate though, the mids and low are definitely accentuated. I did however hear things in recording that I had never heard before.

Saxophones sound great through these speakers! And by the way, I listened to everything from Miles Davis, to Megadeth and The Beach Boys on these speakers. They can handle and reproduce everything well. No breakup or distortion.

The speaker grilles are terrible. Paper thin with these slot type connectors on the top and hooks that slide in below the woofer mount. Very awkward to install and very breakable looking!!!

All-in-all not bad. $109 including shipping! What else are you going to get for that price? I looked. Not much!

Strength:

nice trebel and midrange handling.

Weakness:

low wattage

This was the first speaker I bought when I was just
starting to build my home theater system. Up to now I'm still amazed at the treble of this speakers. I didn't expect any speaker at this price to perform this good.
The sound it produced was clear. Yeah, I think the bass
was a little low, but I didnt mind. I'd be buying a subwoofer anyway. But the real weakness for me was the
low wattage (you'd have to crank the volume level of the amp for a decent volume output on the speakers) but other
than that, I think it's a very very good decent speaker.
Didn't have any regrets buying it!

Strength:

THESE ARE THE DIAMOND 8.2'S NOT 7.2'S. Highs are perfect, mids are perfect, looks perfect, made perfect!

Weakness:

Grill's are fragile but no problem.

Wharfedales are nice, period. I had some $260 JL Audio 6.5 componets in my car that had 1" silk tweeters with ferrofluid and I loved them. Ive listen to all kinds of car audio stuff from Rockford, Polk, Infinity, ADS, OZ, Sony, MB Quart, Diamond Audio, etc and silks just rules. Metal, Al. and all that other stuff just sucks so I wanted some home speakers like my JL's and I found them.

The Diamonds 8.2's have a 1" silk tweeter with ferrofluid, a yellow (very nice) 6.5 Kevlar cone with rubber surrounds and about a 2" front firing port that sounds very nice. The silks are clean, clear and sweet and I don't even have an EQ. The midbass are warm, smooth, and TIGHT, lol, with no port problems. Add a M&K sub and another pair of 8.2's for the rears and the Diamond center and youll be tingling all over, lol. I was when I was listening to some country music on the radio and I like Korn and Rage, strange aaa.

Very nice Wharfedale, and thanks for the HIGH!!!

Looks (I got the rose finish), highs, mids

Weakness:

Grill is pretty meek

Great deals at UBid...$65 for a pair ($80 shipped)
These are the diamond anniversary models.

First impression was, gee, these sure look pretty. Once connected to my Newcastle R-956, I was in audio heaven. Given some time to break in, listening to them is now my favorite hobby. Mixed w/a Valdus centre channel, you really can't go wrong. Takes some power to drive the 4 I have (front pair and rear pair), but DVDs, CDs, MP3s are solid. Definitely fully recommend for the price.

Strength:

Price and Value, Home Theater

Weakness:

Analog recordings, Brass and wind instruments

This is a follow up review. I have had a chance to burn the speakers in and give a more accurate review.

These speakers are great for DVD Home Theater use. I highly DO NOT recommend these speakers for high fidelity music recordings. Wind and Brass Instruments sound irratating on these speakers.

I use these speakers only for Home Theater. If you get the anniversary model, Bi-Wire them...you will notice better performance.

I have these speakers hooked up to a HK AV310 (see review on this av receiver)and they are awesome for DVD. But when listening to CD recordings their performance is lackluster. Placement is everything, make sure you allow 6 inches between the wall and the rear port.

I am pleased with my purchase (use for DVD)and would recommend them as great rear/effects speakers.

Strength:

Clean full range sound, suprising low end, solid constuction, banana plugs, compact size, deal of the year

Weakness:

Cheesy grill, very directional, a bit bright

I picked up these for the bedroom and, for price, these just can't be beat. I may eventually add an 8" sub to tighten up the low end, but they excel as bedroom or surround speakers. There has been much made about Wharfedales recent troubles (I think the company has been bought and sold several times over the past few years), but if my pair of 7.2's are any indication of the current quality trend, then I say the worst is well behind them. These are good little speakers.
When these finally arrived (Ubid is slow as sin), for giggles, I ran a comparison against some old school Polk S-10's. The Polk's have that great Dynamic Balance tweeter, but these Wharfedales kept up. As I noted, they can be a bit bright especially on full range tracks. They are very focused with a narrow sweet spot but, for price, I can accept this. The mid's are quite clean and fill in quite evenly, especially on voices, with minimal distortion. The bass is surprisingly tight as these little guys try to be a much larger speaker. On the low end, they did fall far behind the Polk's, but that was a given going into the event. However, I have to give credit when due, Wharfedale managed to tune the Diamond series quite well. When kept within reasonable ranges, the 7.2's do not disappoint.
If you haven't picked one up, treat yourself. At current prices, you can not lose. Buy 'em just brag about the great deal!

Strength:

Good bass for the size

Weakness:

Very, very poorly made.

Diamond Anniversary Edition
These were a waste of money. I received them new in the
factory packaging. They both have some small something loose and rattling around in them when you turn them over. The cabinet on one is not screwed all the way together and buzzes. The drivers seem to be very good quality, but they are so poorly put together that it doesn't matter. The bass is really good for the size, but the rattles and buzzes ruin that. The mid is muddy at best. The highs are cold, strident, annoying and cheap sounding. I drove these on a Sansui G-4500 and they were terrible, then on a Marantz SR-6000 with better results, but still bad. By way of comparison, I hooked up a set of Pioneer dual cone 6x9s in boxes that I use under the seat of my truck, and they were much, much better. Pretty sad. Save your money. I hung mine in the garage.

Strength:

Generally clean, clear sound. Decent bass for size.

Weakness:

Highs can get a bit strident a high volumes. Lack of imaging.

This review based on Diamond 7.1
These are pretty good for their price and size. Clean, clear, and crisp, they easily best the cheap "rack" speakers that come packaged with minisystems and are definitely a smart upgrade in this application. They will also do well with lower priced receivers. For those on a tight budget, but with a taste for quality sound, these are a good deal.
Are they true audiophile quality? No. Should you expect highly detailed, uncolored sound with a wide, deep soundstage from 11" speakers that cost $100? Only if you're being completely unrealistic. Obviously these are not the choice for someone able to pay more for a good receiver or integrated amp, but those with better amplification should know this already.
I feel compelled to mention that the PSB Alpha Mite and Mini, and the Paradigm Atom, all also very small minimonitors, can be had for $50 to $100 more per pair than the Diamonds and are all better speakers by a noticeable margin. If you can afford this price jump, do so, you won't be disappointed.
Still, the Diamonds are an overall solid value (at about $100 for the pair) and a smart upgrade for minisystems and low cost receivers. If I could, I'd give these 3 and a half stars on both the value and overall rating — a good deal on an above average product.

Strength:

Looks, Nice Gold Bi-Wire Terminals, Low Diffraction Baffle, Large Silk Dome Tweeter, Better than average black vinyl covering on cabinet, Decent bass from small size speaker, Decent power handling for small size speaker

Weakness:

Can be over driven is asked to go to far beyond reason (can actually handle what I consider more than what is reasonable though considering...), Tweeter is not reticent, it obviously has extension but is not the smoothest (personally I prefer more as to not enough-so this is a decent trade-off), If cabinet was even heavier (thicker, denser, and heaver braced) I believe it could even sound better with same drivers.

Everything I will say will be based on these being $100 speakers since most folks buy them for somewhere around that range...These speakers are a good real world example of how far computer modeling techniques have advanced loud speakers in the last two decades. The balance on these speakers is amazing at the price one can buy them at. They way out perform not only that, but also their quite diminutive size. When I exchanged these after using the Optimus LX'8's (lineam tweeter w/ 8" woofer) I was immediately struck with the bass. These speakers have more bass response than the larger LX-8's. That took me a while to adjust to since at first I thought it made the mid-range seem a bit receased. Soon I adjusted and perhaps also the speakers began the process of breaking in. In seemed that after listening more most everything was close to it's proper place. The mids became more there as I adjusted to the bass, the highs were very apparent though if the recording was on the strident side they revealed too much sizzle. This could be compensated for somewhat by the treble control and the axis one listened.

I'll just say this is one heck of a bargain in a speaker. I had a pair of Wharfedale bookshelf speakers 26 years ago that I sold due to the highs being too polite. They were three way speakers with a 10" woofer and this speaker sounds better than they ever did. I'm a bit amazed by these and am totally pleased that for $100 it would be very hard to find better. Here's a thought, many small speakers either cannot go low enough to mate with a sub-woofer system without either a hole in frequency response or having the sub to have to play too high ruining directional bass ques. This speaker seems like it would mate very well with a subwoofer and could play loud if the very lowest notes around 65hz and below were rolled off. Might just be a big speaker system killer?

I love clear highs so I've been using Radio Shack Optimus LX-5's and LX-8's due to Lineam tweeters. I have large planar and electrostatic speakers in other systems so I can have a good reference to compare mini-monitors to.
