PSB Speakers Image 6T Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Image 6T Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

This powerful combination of three 6.5-inch woofers and the Image tweeter takes the impact of music and movies to peak levels. It is hard to imagine any likely use in any likely home listening/viewing room that will stress this speaker or cause it to lose any of its "you are there" detail. This is a speaker for high demands, even in big listening rooms.

Strength:

tight bass, HT, imaging.

Weakness:

some vocals are laid back, midrange can get lost behind the bass.

I had to replace my Sub Sat 6's due to a mishap at my New Year's Eve party. May they rest in peace. >

My replacement search was limited to $1000. If I had the money I would have bought the Martin Logan Aerius. I listened to the Boston Acoustics VR 960 and 970, the ML's (mainly for a benchmark, Sound Dymanics ??, and Energy eXL:26, and the PSB 6T. I was very disappointed in the BA's. The new VR's don't come close to the old Sub Sat 6's, they just draw me into the music. The Energy speakers were too in-your-face. They jumped out announce "Hey I'm here!". Imaging was poor, the sound was localized around the speakers. They would be good for hard rock, not for someone with a varied CD library. The Martin Logans were Fantasic, my dream speaker, but too expensive.

The whole point of this review is to render my opinion on the PSB 6T's, here goes:
The imaging is fantastic, better than my BA's. They definitely pull me into the music. Highs are well defined without being glaring or bright. Bass is tight and clean. However, there is too much bass. Great for Home Theater but, it over powers the mid-range when listening to some musical tracks. The speakers really accel in HT. Vocals are interesting. Some vocals are right there clear, clean, and up front. Sting sounds like he's in the room with you. Then some vocalists get lost. Enya's voice falls back into the music and becomes too laid back. Orinoco Flow sounded much better on the Sub Sat 6's. Then there is Money for Nothing, awesome. During the intro cressendo, the PSB 6T's just suck you right into the music. WOW! Tangerine Dream was sounded very good. In general, these speakers are musical, but lend themselves better to HT. The speaker is too rich with my setup for my taste. I prefer the clean New England speakers mated to a warm Preamp/Amp combo. A good all around speaker for those needing both.

For HT I give the 6T's 4.5 stars for value and overall
For music, 3.5 stars for value and overall. Those liking bass and very rich sound, would probably give this speaker 4-5 stars.

My equipment:
JVC CD - an old one, not that bright harsh thing out today
VTL 2.5 Preamp
Bryston 4B amp
Monster cables and interconnects

Boston Acoustics Sub Sat 6 - best all around under $1500 speaker I've ever heard.

Strength:

Imaging, looks, build quality, bi-amp & bi-wire abilities.

Weakness:

large and heavy, limited to black or a fake looking cherry finish, the feet feel cheap

These speakers are phenomenal. I'm only using a cheap Yamaha receiver to push them but I recently bi-amped them which drastically improved the sound. I plan on upgrading my amp, cables and CD player in the near future. If you plan on buying a pair of these and powering them with a $299 Sony, JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood or Onkyo receiver, think again. Cheap amps = harsh highs and no bass. My Yamaha does a decent job, but a pair of power amps and a nice stere pre-amp would be ideal. Bi-amping is not necessary but when you hear the difference, you'll realize it is a must. I can't say these towers have an impressive amount of bass. They are only 6.5" woofers so if you're looking for that resounding thud of a kick drum, you better be looking to spend more money on a subwoofer too. Although the tweeters are aluminum, they don't get harsh like Klipsch or Infinity and provided you have the right gear, they are extremely smooth and detailed. They do provide a very nice full range sound and I imagine it can only get better when I upgrade my equipment. Peace.

My system as of 8/22/01:
----------------------------------------------
Yamaha RXV-495 Receiver
Onkyo DX-C340 6 disc changer
Sony DVP S330 DVD
Sony 27" Trinitron
Some budget speaker cable and interconnects
