PSB Speakers Image 6T Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Image 6T Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

This powerful combination of three 6.5-inch woofers and the Image tweeter takes the impact of music and movies to peak levels. It is hard to imagine any likely use in any likely home listening/viewing room that will stress this speaker or cause it to lose any of its "you are there" detail. This is a speaker for high demands, even in big listening rooms.

Strength:

Looks, easy to adjust feet, and sound.

Weakness:

Finish is ever so slightly different between the two- only I notice.

The 6Ts repalced a pair of Infinity IL10s (which now are part of my bedroom system). The IL10s were nice but knew I wanted something more. I auditioned a pair of Aegis 3s at a local store- nice, but didn't do it for me. My initial goal was to find a speaker with the tweeter 30-40 inches off the floor without using a stand. Stumbled across the PSB website and requested names of local dealers. All three in my area didn't stock the 6Ts and were unwilling to order them without a purchase commitment. For the 40% margins these guys make- you'd think they'd give me the chance to listen to 'em first. Anyway- I rolled the dice and ordered them from hificiti.com, figuring if they really sucked, I would return them. Five days later they showed up at my doorstep- for $725, I couldn't be happier. Great sound, nice looks, and best of all: no speaker stands.

I've listened to a wide variety of speakers so far in price ranges from $900 to $1700. I will never buy a speaker I haven't taken home and tried on my system. It may sound great in the store, but you may be sadly disappointed with them at home. The B&W 604 is a wonderful speaker, but not worth the $1600-$1700 price. The Paradigm Monitor 11 is nice ($900) I haven't taken the Tannoy Revoultion R3($1300) home yet. The PSB 6T was great. I believe it had a much better sound than the Paradigm.(same price as the Paradigm) It had a nice full range. I wasn't disappointed.

The mid's and high's are great. Great quality for the money. They sound full and room filling. The 6T is an exceptional speaker.
What can I say, I sold my JBL L5, then I bought a pair of Infinity RS-8 (they were more than bad) now I feel like I got what I was lookinf for.
This are $2000 american speakers, believe me.
Don't waist any time, just buy them.

These speakers are just what I was looking for to replace my aging (13yo) Bose 601's. The 601's served me well but the 6T's are much nicer. A lot more articulate particularly in the lows and midrange. Much more forward than the 601's also. The sound stage has more air than the compressed sounding Bose. Bass is tighter and more defined. A joy to listen to for long periods.

I've looked at NHT, Def Techs and others and for the price they couldn't beat the 6T's.

This is an update from 5/2001.
These speakers just keep getting better with time. I've used them for 5 months. I'm extremely happy I bought these. I tried 5 sets of other brands before buying the PSB's. I also added the 9C center channel, huge difference over my Infinty center. Try these speakers, you won't be sorry. I would give them 6 stars if I could.

Strength:

Very good bang for the buck.

Weakness:

Poor port design/woofers used. CHEAP tweet (replace it!)

Listening to the 6t't in the store and comparing them to many others that were in the same price range they were my choice, so we brought home a pair.

After listening for a few days I started to really notice just how harsh the upper end was with some music. I tried to L_Pad the tweet which helped (3db) but not satisfied still. So I purchased a pair of ribbon tweets and made small boxed to set on top of the 6t's. An incredible difference in imaging, clarity and overall quality of sound. This was a vast improvement!!
(Disconnecting the dome is very easy in this speaker because of bi-amp design.)

The ribbons were purchased from Speaker City they have a 6" ribbon and will cross at 1800 - I crossed at 2500 12db to match the 6t.

After another few weeks I am still noticing a harshness in the upper range of vocals (2k to 4k) and thought it was coming from the ribbons, spkr wire, crossover, or combo of all. I found just the other day that this distortion was coming from the woofers. The frequency is too high to be coming from the woofers!! But it is there none the less. The listening level in the room is about 95db these speakers should not "breakup" at 95db. The cones were literally flopping in the breeze.

In trouble shooting the problem I found that the distortion was coming from harmonics. The woofers were not dampened properly for the cabinet design. After some experimenting I placed foam rubber, like found in a chair seat, in each of the ports. WOW!! THIS IS A GREAT TWEEK!! Now at 100db measured from the same spot the distortion is all but gone, I was so happy. The foam I cut was 2.5" X 3".

The modified 6t's now have a great sound for my ear.

Wow, where to start. VALUE, Dollar to performance ratio,Imaging is amazing, wide soundfield,

Weakness:

Depth of cabinets

I have had these towers for about 8 months now. I absolutely love them! I have owned PSB'S in the past. I am totally sold on their dollar to performance ratio. Right out of the box they sounded great. You don't need careful placement to make these sound good. I think that also makes a big difference. I want a speaker that I can coonect and play, not spend 10 hours on positionning them to get the best sound. I do have them toed in a little though. The imaging is amazig on these. When listening to stereo material, I can't tell that the sound is coming from left or right. It is right in front of me. In fact I have to go up to my center channel to make sure it is not on. I think these speakers bring out details and nuances that only come from higher priced speakers. Now onto home theatre use. Forget about it. If you can find a better speaker, then buy it. You can waste your money on buying a more expensive speaker, but why? These things just absolutely rock! They have never sound strained or distorted. Some people have said that they tend to be a little on the bright side. I don't think so at all. I think they are a very smooth sounding speaker. Not harsh. You can definately tell it is an aluminum dome tweeter but ie is not harsh like some. I really like the clarity and detailed sound this tweeter gets. To sum it all up, I have heard better towers for stereo music playback such as Martin Logans and Monitor Audio's, but for 3-4 times more than what I paid for these, for home thatre though, I would see absolutel no point in spending moew money, these speakers do home theatre better than any I have ever heard! And they do both music and home theatre. Some speakers are good at one and terrible at the other. Not so here. I am getting ready to match them up with the Image 9 c center channel. I also ordered a Subsonic 7! Can't wait! My system is Marantz SR-9200, Image 6t's, Stratus c-5 center channel"soon to be 9c,Image 10s for surrounds, Stratus Mini's for rear, and soon to be Subsonic 7! As you can tell, I am sold on PSB!

Weakness:

Size (They are DEEP!)

I basically had my speaker hunting narrowed down to
Paradigm vs. PSB. The Monitor 7 (1+2-drv/2-way) was my
initial front runner. I demoed it at a dealer (Audio Ark)
and compared it to Paradigm's high end Studio 60
(3-drv/2.5-way). The 60 sounded a little better in
the base and the Al tweeter sounded a bit smoother than
the Monitor 7's Ti tweeter (female voices harsh). The 60,
however, was at the top of my price range.

I then listened to the PSB Image 5T (1+2-drv/2.5-way) and
found it closer to the 60's. The PSB 5T also had the Al
tweeter. To make a final decision I brought a pair of
Monitor 7's and Image 5T's home.

After listening all weekend I concuded that the 5T's were
better with imaging (probably the 2.5-way design) and their
high end seemed a little more restrained and natural as
compared to the Monitor 7's (possibly Al vs. Ti tweeter).

They were also much cheaper then the Studio 60's that
were almost out of my price range yet similar in sound
and design. The the only design element that they lacked
in comparison was different (optimized) drivers for bass
and midrange (the 60's have a mica midrange and mineral
bass whereas the 5T's have two identical polypros).

Thus I returned the demos and was going to by a pair of
PSB 5T's when the dealer told me that he wanted to get rid
of his nearly virgin 6T demos as they did not get much
interest (most people either getting the 5T's or into
something much more expensive). The 6T's are almost
identical except that they are a 1+3-drv/2.5-way design
with two bass only drivers and a deeper cabinet. Anyhow
I therefore got them for a steal and he threw in a brand
new centre channel 9C for around $250.

As an aside this was another major consideration in
going PSB. The Paradigm centre channel offerings were
much more anemic and had I gone that route I would have
purchased 3 identical Monitor 7's or Studio 60's.

A couple of final, non-audio, things that tipped the
scales:

-I have kids and the sturdy plastic grid grills on the
PSB's are much more protective then the Paradigm.

-The damn binding posts on the Paradigms are a non-
standard width and did not fit my dual banana plus.

Strength:

Imaging, crazy bass, sound projection (see below), natural sounding (see below), sound stage, and the look (aggressive & mean looking)! Oh VALUE (well priced, well made!) !!!!!!

Weakness:

Cabinet depth (20inches), binding post could be better, long break-in time (100+)

This is the second day I own these speakers. After listened to them for 6 hours yesterday, I came up with a conclusion¡K I MADE THE RIGHT CHIOCE. I have been dreaming of a nice pair of speakers for a year now. I only have a minimum wage job and I am still a student; therefore I wanted to get a pair speaker that is worth me spending all my months of savings on. During my saving period I have listened to many pairs of speakers and did tones for research on 6 pairs of speakers that interested me the most. Here is my summary:
-eXL: 26 (tweeter is too bright, sound projection is too in-your-face or too up front, no bass, but good vocals)
-eXL: 28 (slightly bright, have bass but the for the same money I would rather buy the 26 with a 10 in sub)
-Mission (too lay back, its good if you have a house with brick wall and hard wood floor)
-Definitive Tech Pro-tower 400 (nice pair great bass, not many places sell it in Canada, therefore hard to get it serviced, also power speakers are not for true music listeners)
-Bose towers (good musical speakers, but build quality was the main problem, plus can¡¦t play ghetto music or other party music)
-KEF and B&W (nice sounding speakers, little lay back, however too over-priced)

Here are the reasons why I choose PSB 6Ts:
Have you ever read a book and you are so into it that you started to think and see like the characters in there or even believe you are they?
That is what happens with these speakers, when you listen to them, close your eyes for 2 min, you¡¦ll think you are there, live!, you can clearly hear where all the instruments are (that what I mean Natural sounding + Imaging + Soundstage). The overall sounding is not too bright or too lay back (sound projection). Bass is crazy for speakers; you dont need a sub with these puppies if you don't have Infinity Perfect 12.1s in your car. One musical weakness is bass could cover up nice mid-bass from time to time (well you can turn it down with EQ right?). Also nothing is perfect¡K at least not for this price.
Overall value, 5 stars, to find a speaker that would beat 6Ts you¡¦ll need a speaker that is at least twice of its cost.
*** Hey I having break them in yet!!*** (can't wait, and will write another report in a month)

Strength:

Incredible bass without a sub, quality construction, bi-wire capability, modern design.

Weakness:

Very large cabinet (check with girlfriend or wife first!), reveals weaknesses on poor and older recordings.

This is my second review. Please see my initial review for my first thoughts... After almost a year, I still enjoy these speakers very much. I have upgraded my system to include an Adcom Preamp/Tuner to match my Adcom Power Amp, and have upgraded to Audioquest Crystal Bi-Wire speaker cables and a Sony 200 DVD player. The 6Ts sounded great before the upgrade, but sound even better now! The result is crystal clear music with a little less brightness, and the bass is tighter and much more refined. I believe that the Bi-Wire setup provided the most significant improvement, and is the easiest and perhaps most cost-effective way to improve the already great sound of the 6Ts. DVD soundtracks sound fantastic (wait to you hear the THX intro on some DVD movies!) and you can really rock the house with the bass which is normally reserved for a separate sub. I personally believe that a sub is unnecessary with the 6Ts, as my neighbors can testify. Find a dealer and listen to the 6T with Bi-Wire and a good Amp. You'll discover the "Affordable Excellence" of PSB.
