Weakness:

-Not for everyone

After looking and listening to a lot of other, similar tower speakers, these have won my ear. Part time I assist in producing live concerts and doing sound checks, so i consider my ears to be well tuned. The VT-2's are capable of putting out superb raw sound at all volume levels. They are not suited for everybody. They will NOT produce a warm or "smooth" sound; rather, they will emit true and accurate sound reproduction. I feel that the sound quality you get is comparable to towers that are 2-3 times the price. The 10" sub is ported for good low frequency response and delivers more punch and rumble than you would expect. The enclosure is also magnetically sealed to prevent tube television distortion. They are finished beautifully but do not take well to "duct tape" as well as Sony's do.

Placement, size

I was looking for the best affordable system for high-end classical music recordings and home theater applications. After a number of serious rounds of listening, I chose the VT-2/VS-2 and I have had no reasons to reconsider the choice. They are sensitive on placement and the equipment feeding them, but I still get that "WOW!" feeling when I bring home a new great classical recording. The resolution in symphonic music or the freq response in pipe organs is amazing. For Home Theater applications, a sub-woofer doesn't seem necessary (at least if you have a "normally" sized room). Maybe they are a bit too large for a non-enthusiast and they can't be placed too close to the wall. But if you do it right it pays off good.

Strength:

Soundstage. Bass. Accuracy.

Weakness:

Power-hungry. Placement sensitive.

The last few reviews are quite amusing. The idea that these speakers have no bass (or ''base'') is absurd - you seriously do not need a subwoofer with them, espeically if you bi-amp them. Also, three reviews in a row that say "there are better speakers out there" without clueing us in. Quite simply, these are among the best speakers in their price range. They ARE placement sensitive - if you place them incorrectly, you''ll get a boxy sound. But they aren''t boxy if placed correctly. They are very revealing speakers - good recordings sound amazing (accuracy, soundstage, low and tight bass), but bad recordings are revealed in all their lack of glory. They need a lot of power: if you listen to music loud, minimum 100 watts. But if you can feed them, they sound as good as any comparable priced speaker out there.

I ended up with these speakers as payment from a friend who owed me money. These are the most expensive speakers that I’ve owned. I really like superior quality products. The first thing that I noticed about these speakers was a lack of sound stage. I listen to a lot of live music at a local bar. My living room was unable mimic the sound at the bar with these speakers. They sounded boxy and I missed the involvement into the music. Perhaps there’s a flaw in the design of this speaker. My wife’s cat scratched a small hole in the left midrange driver. I had been listening to the speakers with the grills off. Anyway I used a small piece of electrical tape to seal the hole. I don’t think that this has changed the sound of the speakers and my wife agreed with me. I’m rather picky when it comes to music.

Strength:

Good sound stage, dispersion is very good.

Weakness:

They need lots of power and take up a lot of room.

I saw these speakers when they were first introduced. I wanted them immediately; however, I couldn''t afford them at the time. Over the years, I bought cheap speakers. Finally, I saved up and purchased these. Although they sound better than anything I''ve had, I think that there''s better speakers out these days for the money. All the technology advances really make a difference. My experience shows that these speakers need at least 75 watts to really produce. Good sound stage, dispersion is very good. The base output is very strong, almost overwhelming. However, if you adjust the bass on your amp and place the speakers well, you can get a end up with a fairly balanced system. The highs seem a tad bright to me. Female vocals sound good. Depending on the type of music you listen to, you might be very happy with these. I listen to many different types of music.

Overall these are good speakers in this price range. Good for many different types of music and home theater. I listen to jazz. The sound stage is fairly good. You need to set these up right though. Speaker placement is key. I spent about 2 hours finding the right place for mine. 18" from the rear wall and 23" from the side wall. A subwoffer is really not needed for these. The bass goes fairly low. Good overall tonal balance and the coloration is not that noticable. With that said, there''s other speakers in this price range that I''d rather have.

This speaker needs a good amp. Works well with music and theater. Deep bass can be acheived with higher wattage. Clear highs and great midrange. Needs to be placed well. Speaker looks good and has nice finish.

I got a pair of these to replace my old Pioneer speakers. Loaded up my Sherwood CD changer with some high quality Rap and Heavy Metal CDs and started my audition. Overall, they couldn''''t perform like my 10 year old Pioneers. They were completely lacking in base output. I like to feel the vibrations of the music. The vibrations make get up on my coffee table and dance as good as homo. These speakers had no boomyness though. Even after I turned up the bass to max and pushed the speakers against the back wall, the bass was still very lacking. Needless to say, I took these back. I''''m still looking for something better than I already have. I used standard Monster Cable and my 6-year Sherwood receiver. It has 50 watts per channel. Plenty for these puppies

Strength:

Unbelievable bass, even with my Denon 4802; they sound even better bi-amped. Great detail - you''ll hear things you never heard before (unless you own $10,000 speakers).

Weakness:

Power-hungry...don''t hook them up to anything under 100 watts unless you listen at pretty low volumes.

I don''t have the vt-2, but the vt-2.4, the newer version of the vt-2. NHT is also discontinuing the vt-2.4 and will release a whole new line of speakers. My vt-2.4''s sound amazing. They are SO much better than the $1000 Polks they are replacing. Incredible detail. Great for rock, classical, AND home theater (and I never thought I''d find speakers that could do all three at this price point). Get the vt-2.4 before stores run out of them. Run, don''t walk.

Strength:

Have never clipped with bi-wired 200 w/channel. Once in place with good source equipment and material, they are truely musical.

Weakness:

Like power and room. Don''t we all. Two was not enough. I had to get a second pair.

Great for both music and theater. Image well, solid deep bass, like to be driven hard and never even blink. With two, stereo music is reproduced in my home for hours. With four, Dolby Digital and DTS are to die for. With Meridian surround processing and (2) VS2a centers, man oh man, I am in audio heaven. The only trouble is I am moving and will only share another two months with them. It will be two wonderful months though.
