my dealer knows my listening habits (i listen loud!) and when my paradigm 9's kept frying tweeters he quickly escorted me to a pair of 5.5's on sale as "floor models". i knew very little of klipsch except that they were expensive and very sensitive (read:very efficent at making loud music). his demo CD was fascinating and he explained the "unique" sound which will "grow on me". i was intrigued yet impressed with the 5.5's and with a floor model price and another $100 off (for a flaw in the lamination i noticed) i had to buy them! these speakers hit you right in the face when they start showing off their capability. wow. they really are neat/cant explain the feeling but some have said after listening for a while it feels like you're on a weird acid trip/kinda freaks ya out??!! for $900 canadian (about $600 U.S. money) they wonderfull. con: the tractrix tweeter is acurate...too harsh though as i find i cant listen flat.....my treble knob is at "9:00 oclock" to mellow out the horns.

Clean, efficient, extremely good deal for $800. Hope I can find 3 appropriate speakers to use with it for surround.

Strength:

Lows,Highs,and everything in between.

Weakness:

Heavy. Not bright,,,,lets say crisp about 103 dcb. and above.

Bought these babies in fall of 1994 along with Klipsch
KV-2 center,Klipsch SW12II sub,and two bargain find DCM
Time Frame 400's for surround.Use Sony ES reciever to drive
surrounds and Acurus 100X3 for KG5.5's and KV-2.Have set
up to use either in surround or five speaker"stereo"mode.
The Acurus drives both front and rear speakers as loud and
clean as you can stand it.OH yeah, the center also.Like the
fuzzy,quezzzy feeling reviewer above described.The SW12II,
KG5.5 combo offers tons of bass.Them ole Time Frames ain't
too shabby either. After 6 years of gathering dust without
any problems,I'm beginning to think about upgrading to KLFC7
or RC3 center,the only somewhat(but still awesome)weak link
in the system.I have absolutly no complaints with my "ugly
black " 5.5's,I just wish the ol'gal I married 28 years ago
performed as well.

Strength:

These speakers provide awesome bass response and do not need a sub added to the system when placed correctly. The key is placement in the room, the can sound crappy if placed wrongly. I got these when I was in College and needless to say I had some of the most kick ass dance parties because of these babies. They were ment to be played loud, but can also pick up the finest detail with the horn tweeters. I would recommend, if you can find a pair, to pick these up, especially in the oad finish, because you will not find a better pair for the money.

Weakness:

Heavy to move, but who gives a crap

I summed it up up there, there friggin awesome, not made for apartments because youll hear complaints. This speaker is awesome for movies especially DVD, unreal realizm.

Strength:

like having a concert in your house, great base, clean highs

Weakness:

none worth mentioning

When I was looking for these speakers, I listened to about 30 pairs of speakers from Polk, B&W, etc. I listed to everything from $1500 down to about $600 (and maybe 2 or 3 above $1500 just for kicks) and Klipsch was one of the last 5 I demoed. When I heard the 5.5s in action, I knew my search was over. I was in awe. I had listened to some very high quality speakers but none could match the "livliness" of these speakers. It was almost like a religous experience and I've never regretted it for one minute. I still listed to new speakers to see what advancements have been made but haven't found one that sounds better than my 5.5s. I have them matched with RS-3 surrounds and the RC-3 center and the Klipsch experience just keeps getting better and better. I should be receiving my new Onkyo Integra DTR 7.1 receiver so it looks like I may need to add 2 more Klipsch to my room. I think I'll be a Klipsch Man for the rest of my years.

Strength:

Loudness, Bass, Clarity

Weakness:

Power handling, Bass, Two-way speaker

I have had these speakers for over five years and I still find myself impressed by them. They are very sensitive and handle power well (up to a point). I originally had a Deneon receiver (60 or 65 watts) and of course the speakers had absolutely no problems handling anything it could dish out. Then I upgraded to an Adcom 5500 amp (200 watts RMS) and a GTP 450 pre-amp. Within a month I blew 3 of the woofers and both horns. It was my fault. I was using them as the sound system for a frat party and played them too loud for too long. Just as with any speaker if you exceed the power rating on these speakers they will blow. Since then I have been more careful and have had no problems. The bass is excellent at low-mid volumes, but when you really crank on the power things start to get muddy. These speakers would sound so much better with another horn (if it was a 3-way speaker), or if paired with a sub. Also, they will not fill the room like the Klipsh Chorus series. However, all things considered these speakers are excellent and I would highly recommend them. The horns are incredible and will play louder than you would ever need. They sound great when watching DVD's. I find that they are so effecient that low quality CD's sound very harsh when played at high volumes, but when listening to high quality CD's they sound perfect.
