Strength:

for a non-powered woofer: pawerful enough. I do not have the need to crank-up the volume in order to hear the lows clearly. very neutral sound (main reason I chose them).

Weakness:

possibly, style. Although, not bad looking, I have seen more contemporary styles.

I have the JBL S312 speakers now for over a year. before I purchased them, I listened to them at various local audio dealers. Once, in my home environment I had to "break them in" for about 40 hours before I could discern the sound I experienced at the local dealers. They are heavy and, well build. Sound is clear, and detailed for the highs and, mid-range. The 12" woofer is sufficient enough for me: clean, low, discernible frequencies, potent enough for a non-powered woofer. This speakers are at their best, when used for music.

Strength:

great sound for music and movies,?xD;?xA;got them for an amazing price, I haven't heard anything that sounds nearly this good for anything aproaching the price I paid for them

Weakness:

size (not a big weakness, but I'm not sure how I'm gonna fit them in my dorm room in the fall),?xD;?xA;got them at best buy (sales people hassle you to waste money until you show them you know more than they do, and they can't con you into buying anything),?xD;?xA;I'm still using a sub for movies as I said above, but it certainly isn't necessary

Went to best buy, looking to buy the S38s now that the S series II has come out and the price is down. They had these open box for 325, and the s center for 140. I was able to get them to give me all three for $400 total. One of the best deals I've come across in a while. Anyway, the actual review. For music I'd give these an easy 5 stars. The bass goes low enough for me for music, and is very tight and clean, at high volumes as well as low volumes. Once you turn them up though, you don't want to turn them down. Highs and mids are clean and accurate, and nothing is overstated. For movies, they are also great, although, I'm still going to be using my sub, a jbl ps 120 I picked up used for $60 (something else I consider a great buy), it's a little dirty but I think thats ok for the really low effects in movies.?xD;?xA;System:?xD;?xA;Yamaha 5450?xD;?xA;JBL S 312 up front?xD;?xA;JBL S center?xD;?xA;JBL S 26 or 36 surround (soon)?xD;?xA;JBL PS 120 (sub for movies only) ?xD;?xA;I highly recommend looking around for these while they're still out there, you should be able to get a great price. The speaker build is exactly the same ( I am led to believe) as the S series II except the color, and you can get them for a fraction of the price

I just purchased my JBL s312 studio series speakers. I have been wanting these for a while now. I decided to drive 1 hr to the nearest Best Buy to check these out again for the umpteenth time. Well unbelievable, I found the s312 on sale. They were the old floor models sitting off to the side. The price advertised was $699.50. The salesmen was anxious to get rid of them. I really played dumb as wasn't sure if I wanted them or not. So he said I'lol give them to u for 650 + an additional warranty of 4 years = 9 year warranty. The warranty would cost 29.99 a speaker he took 50 $ off tghe speakers so I got the warranty for $10. I told him I would have to think about it........:) give me a 1/2 hr. I came back, he hooked up the speakers they played.....music to my ears!! Anyways, when I went to the register to pay for them they rang up $299.50. He came over took another 10 bucks off so I got the speakers for about $600.00 including tax. Now all I have to get is the receiver, dvd player and TV. I will report back in a month or 2 report my news on this speaker. After I move in and get my Receiver & DVD player.

Strength:

1. Fantastic sound quality clear highs clean mids great sound 2. Build quility was impressive 3. Gold on black very attractive looking

Weakness:

Not mine personally but being i work in the business i''ve seen quite a few where the feet on the bottom of the speakers break off if draged and not carried however JBL fixed this with the new S312II

I picked up these speakers one day at work. With no intentions of keeping them. I at the time had the ND310s and was very satisfied with them. I only purchased these due to and extremly good deal opportunity. Upon listening to the s312 vs. the nd310s i quickly boxed my nd310s up and threw them in the back room to collect dust. Although the bass response was heavier with the nd310s the overall clearness and cleaness of the highs and mids was just beautiful in the s312. The only place these speakers lack is in there deep bass. But that is where my PB12 kicks in. One other thing and don''t tell JBL this but i was curious to see what was inside the speakers so i opened them up and to my surprise the build quality seemed flawless. The cotton was nicely glued inside the crossover neatly mounted along with all the wires neatly ran and with seemly good connections. Only complaint is JBL could have used bigger magnets on the 12" allowing it to be able to produce more bass. Finally what idiot complains about the weight? Who cares they sound good!!!

Strength:

Incredible mid range clarity; excellent highs and strong bass; outstanding efficiency

Weakness:

Large cabinets, bass could be a little stronger (easy addressed by increasing bass power on amp).

JBL continues to build very high quality speaker system at a very reasonable cost. I paid $600 from JandR.com for these speakers; comes with 5 yr warranty. They provide excellent highs, strong bass, and an incredibly accurate mid-range. I demo''d several speakers (infinity, polk, klipsh, etc.) that were more expensive and couldn''t even touch these JBLs. Yes, they are big! But you need a big woofer and a large cabinet to generate reasonable lows with significant volume. And they are incredibly efficient. With my 100W/channel Yamaha receiver, these speakers provide very high volume at ~60% setting. Competing speakers definitely take less floorspace, and look cool with their twin 6 or 8" woofers, but they don''t compare on sound. When you go to a concert, you don''t see those wimpy 6" drivers - it''s real simple - they can''t do the job on the low end. There are better speakers made, but not at $600/pair - you have to spend >$1000 to surpass these JBLs. If you are looking for best value for the buck, you found it. These speakers are the highlight of my system. - I love ''em.

Strength:

Great new look, spikes, solid bass, great highs and mids, bargain price

Weakness:

Can''''''''''''''''t bi-amp them

Kuddos to JBL for their upgrades on the Studio Series speakers. I had a pair of the S312s, first generation, and was very happy with their performance. However, one of the speakers was damaged during shipping and I was waiting for a replacement. The speaker worked fine but the cabinet was crunched. My dealer informed me that his distributor could no loger get the old model but was willing to take both of the 312s back and send me a pair of the S312 mark IIs. OK with me!. In a word, WOW! First of all, the cabinets are much more attractive. I got the black maple color which is more of a black/gray. The grill is black instead of that ugly brown with a nice silver JBL logo on the bottom. They also dumped the cheap plastic feet for recessed rubber ones and can now accept spikes for carpet. A very big improvement, really tightens up the bass. The front edges are now chamfered to help resonance and the sturdier front baffle helps with enclosure induced colorations, so JBL says. I don''''''''''''''''t know about all that "audiophile" terminology stuff, but I can tell you they sound awesome. I was able to do an A/B with the new and old 312s. The new ones were much better sounding overall. Imaging was better, bass tighter and deeper, mids and highs warmer and more believable, especially vocals. My only complaint is that you can''''''''''''''''t bi-amp them but this is a minor thing. Best of all, the price, so far, is the same as the old 312s. These are a serious mid-fi contender for a low-fi price. Give them a listen and I know you will be impressed. Clarity Bass!! Impressive size and stature

The JBL S312 is an outstanding speaker. I could not believe the amazing difference when I first connected them to my system. Each music track seems to have a new dimension. I listen with the amplifier controls set flat and am pleased with the uniform projection of the highs and lows. The low end is strong and clean with no booming. I don''t see much need for a sub woofer. I did a listening comparison of JBL speakers to ther brands at similar prices - Bose, Sony, Cerwin Vega, KLH, Yamaha, etc. - and am convinced of their superior sound. I am very satisfied with the JBL S312 and it has exceded all of my expectations.

Strength:

tight deep bass a warm room filling sound

Weakness:

have recieved 9 noise violations in my dorm...should be kicked out after 2, but the head resident has jbl s36''s, and a nht amp...he thinks its funny (in other words they need a bigger sound stage than a dorm room...without 100 neighbors) HAHAHAHA! needs a powerful amplifier needs good cables...these arent exactly weaknesses, its just without them the speaker isnt at its potential hmm...seem a little big...i think they are the same size as the s412...

My first impression of this speaker straight from the box, was around a 3.5 out of 5. The bass was slightly weak, and the highs were metalic. I then adjusted the bass slightly on my Marantz PM7000, and the bass came alive. I think this is due to the large magnet of these huge 74 lb beasts. They just need more power to perform. I still didnt think the sound was clear enough, it was too nuetral and unnatural. I continued listening to the speakers for a few months, never realizing that i was using shiatty 14 guage radio shake speaker wire. I really never payed much attention to speaker wire...never thought it could make a difference. I read the previous review, and on a limb drove out to Good Guys to purchase so cable. I didnt intend to spend $75 on speaker wire, but OMG i am soo glad i did. The speakers are clear, crystal clear, the bass is tight, the highs are crisper and not harsh AT ALL, the speakers warmed up completely...wow thank you monster cable z1 !!!

Strength:

Natural sound they the source material the way it was recorded. Capable of some awesome Bass--no need for a Sub for DVD''s. Sounds like your at a live performance.

Weakness:

none, unless you don''t like big speakers. Maybe arent the best looking speakers. (they certainly arent bad looking, but not as cool as alot of other speakers. More of the 70''s big speaker look :)

I feel the same way as the Previous reviewer. These speakers put out what is written on the source material very accurately. If you have a complaint that there is too little bass or something, well thats how it was recorded and encoded on the CD. Also very true about the details. You can hear everything coming through crystal clear. Some songs I would realize they were saying a different word than I though-after all this time! :). To go back to the Bass issue. These speakers can definately dish out some serious bass (as they should with the dual 12''s) when the source material wants it that way. By the way, after I hooked up my Monster Z1 speaker cable it enhanced the bass alot (no BS). I was never a big beleiver in upgrading speaker cable, but let me tell you it DID make a significant difference especially in the Bass, which now is stronger as well as tighter. Overall these S312''s are fantastic speakers and sometimes I close my eyes and I am blown away because it literally does sound like I''m sitting in front of a live Performance. Again, very natural sounding. And for $390 at my door, hey I am one happy camper!
