Strength:

NONE

Weakness:

name it (I was ripped off)

Thes speakers are absolute garbage. The best thing they did was take them off the market. At least nobody else will make the mistake I did and buy the L7 speakers. I was ripped off.

i bought the jbl L7 about 6 months ago, and i can say that i'm very pleased with them. an imporant factor for me personally is the clear bass. the L7 has 2 different bass speakers (one 8 " and one 15 ").
my HK 690 has ampel power to drive the speakers to the desired volume.

I have two pair used solely for my HT so I won't comment for music only application. I drive them with two Acurus amps which is significant as they are 100 watt amps and the JBLs like lots of power. Those amps really are remarkably engineered little workhorses. I purchased the first pair of speakers in London ten years ago and bought the second pair two years ago for only 300.00! What a deal! I highly recommend them for HT in a very large room (my room is 38 by 28). I think Mr. Tucker's review on this page is laughable and reflects a truly juvenile and neurotic individual. I only comment on his review as it's negativity is truly unfounded and without merit for this particulairly well made product. Especially at this price point given the incredible variety of true crap available these days.

Strength:

Good/tight bass, clean high frequency sound,
good for both of AV and Hifi, duability

Weakness:

known of nothing

I purchased JBL-L7 10 years ago ( 10 years) in USA.
I have never had any complaint about it.
It works good for movies with SONY STR-BD940 and good for
POP/classic together with QUAD PRE/POWER AMP since
I met him 10 years ago.

Until he will be dead for his life time, I'm not
willing to hand him over to other guy.

I love it.

I've had these speakers for several years and have always thought highly of them.Recently, I purchased a Yamaha DSP-A1 and my speakers have gone places they or I have never been before. These speakers really are amazing. They are very true. I enjoy their warmth...tend to favor the bass.

For the money, the imaging should be better. Complete 4-way speaker. Very good for home theater.

Strength:

It would be hard to name just one. There strengths are the sum of all there components, and how they operate together.

Weakness:

The fact that they are not german made so they did not get the press they very well deserved.

Well have had these speakers for about 6 months now. I cant really find any falts with them. They are a very musical speaker. The L7s have good sound across the board. The bass is fantastic. Deep, tight and very acurate. The mids are amazing. Male and female vocals come across very monophonic. With great detail. The vocals are allways up front, unless there not, in the original recording. The focus never sways, unless the people move in the music. Some people would call this an up front character, but this is what I would call accuracy. How many singers do you know of that are behind the music, or even with it? The highs are not bright even though these speakers use a metal dome tweeter. They do not sound metalicky. And look inside one of these babys. Good bracing, very good crossover. All the components are cast alluminum frames. 16 gauge audiophile cable throughout. Fit and finish are outstanding. These should be studio monitors because they are very unforgiving of lousily recorded music. If the music sounds like crap so will the speakers. If it sounds great then the speakers will sound great. And they are a very good speaker to tell the differences in room placement, cables, and components. Some speakers pretty much make everything sound the same. These do not. In my opinion for all around musicallity there is not another speaker that will touch it. Oh and about the imaging, they also image very well in the right room and right place. People tend to try to find a good place for 10000$ speakers because if they set them up in a certain place and they sound like crap. They tend to believe that there is no way this speaker can sound this bad. Not with kevlar and carbonfiber, and all that high dollar stuff they put in speakers nowadays. People tend to say I spent 10 grand on these here speakers and they will sound great if I have to make a whole new room and place these in it. Then they get a great review. Even audio mags do it. If it has a good name. And it is expensive ,then they will move them around untill they sound there best. But on an inexpensive speaker they will set them down and test them and say something like they sonded slightly up front but that could have something to do with room reflections Or placement But they dont spend any time trying to find a good place for them. Everyone knows that NHT has a good rep for imaging. But look at the legs on those babies. You can get adjustible spikes for any speaker. And adjust and adjust and adjust till you make a big improvement in imaging. So all I am saying is put these speakers in the right place with good quality music and components, and they will give any speaker a run for there money regardless of price. And for a suggested retail of 2000$ You cant go wrong.

Strength:

Very tight and clean bass, titanium tweeters produce sweet
and detailed highs.Imaging is pretty good.Midrange is also
very strong.

Weakness:

None,really.

These are excellant sounding speakers.Very strong bass, midrange, and crystal clear highs.I do agree that they
make bad recordings sound very bad.But boy do they make
great recordings sound good.Donald Fagens Night Fly CD
sounds awesome on these speakers. They really would be ideal
for a recording studio where musical accuracy is needed.
The construction of the speakers is excellant,as it should
be for a speaker costing 1000.00 to 1500.00 dollars.
The attachable bases give the speakers a little more
strength and seem to tighten up the base a little.
These speakers really don't hit there sweet sound until
you throw a little power at them. They really like a little
juice to get them started.I had them hooked up to a Linn
power amp,and an audio research SP6 preamp and boy
did that make for an outstanding sounding system.
I would highly recommend them to an audiophile that is
looking for a very expensive sounding speaker. They sound
fantastic.

Strength:

Solid construction, high quality transducers, good imaging, extraordinary frequency response

Weakness:

Crossover point for low frequency transducer is 25-50 cycles too high, the painted ash cabinets are easy to chip.

These speakers can be purchased for $500-$750 on the used market and are a genuine bargain in that price range. The L7's, like all late model JBL products, is very much misunderstood. In the audio community there exists many misconceptions when it comes to the basic fundamentals of sound reproduction and electrical engineering. The difference between good and bad is purely subjective in relation to products that all perform beyond our ability to measure their differences with instruments. The only thing that can be said with any degree of objectiveness is that they all sound different.

After many years of testing and evaluating sound reproduction systems and devices I've discovered a few simple things that will help the consumer choose equipment that will work well together. The speaker is perhaps the single most important piece of equipment when it comes to determining how your system will sound. Next in importance is the amplifier, and its interaction with the speaker. This is by no means an argument that expensive amplifiers and speakers will equal great sound.

Amplifiers all have different electronic characteristics that effect their interaction with the speakers. Dampening, speed, sensitivity to changes in impedance, etc. JBL speakers are all highly dampened by design, so it makes sense that pairing them with an amplifier that also has high dampening characteristics will result in a shrill treble quality to the sound.

The L7 needs to be paired-up with amps like the McIntosh MC-2105, which has a very low dampening factor. (There are much less expensive amplifiers that will render similar results.)

Due to the side firing woofers, room placement can be critical with these speakers and others like them. The slightly angled front transducer array begs for 8'-9' foot ceilings from which to reflect sound waves. High or vaulted ceilings will produce poor imaging and lack of ambience.

One of the best design elements of this speaker was the thought given to average home design. Most homes are built with 8'-9' ceilings and usually have a long wall against which the speakers can sit.

These speakers need to be separated by at least 8' and should have nothing within 3'-4' of the side-firing woofers. The should sit no more than 18" from the back wall.

When setup properly with the right amplifier these speakers can easily compete with others costing as much as $5,000. If you spend a little extra effort tweeking the low frequency crossover to match your room acoustics they can produce almost life-like sound and imaging.

These speakers may not boost your "audiophile ego" with how much they cost, but they will boost the level of pleasure you receive from listening to good music.

Strength:

Seems very solidly built. Better bass response than my other speakers.

Weakness:

Compared with other, less expensive speakers that I purchased later (MB Quart Domain D55s) the L7s seem to lack a certain "warmth", for lack of a better word. Something seems a little artificial at times. Does not sound quite as natural as other speakers that I have heard.

If you are listening to a DTS at moderate levels intent on hearing the guitar player's fingers brush along the strings, then these may be the wrong speakers. I can't find the words to describe the problem, but it is difficult to close my eyes and imagine that I am sitting in front of a live band. I can, however, get that effect with other speakers. It seems like it would be a good speaker for bass heavy DVD movies. That is how I presently use them. There is something comforting about how solidly built the speaker feels but, against that, the exterior has sort of a plastic look, and doesn't even pretend to be wood.
