Strength:

Clear 3D sound with very low colorations.

Fast dry bass, with absolutely no overhang or boom.

Clear mid, with very well integration of drivers, dry and clear top from Ti tweeter.

Very impressed with the dynamic integration of the 4 elements, same freqency response and sound quality from low to very high level.

Weakness:

Placement, they dominate the room, like John Wayne - standing tall, totaly in control, likes free space.

You really have to spend time to get the placement absolutely right.

And you must have a symetric room, with no asymetric openings to other rooms.

Very obvious high class speakers.

I make my own D/A converters, and this speaker makes the job of fine tuning the sound very easy.

Clear sound, without any attempt to color the sound.

The sound, especially when listening to vinyl, roomfilling 3D soundstage.

The sound of digital playback is obviously limited by the CD media.

Recommend to use them biamped, as the sound improves immensely.

This is the first speaker I have owned that really likes to stand tall and free, placed nearly in the middle of the room, well avay from the rear wall.

Strength:

Big Powerful soundstage, Imaging is awesome, Wow factor will blow you away!

Weakness:

NONE

I had never heard a pair of JBL L7's until I bought these, was I in for a suprise. Money wise they are one of the best 4 way speaker I have had the pleasure to hear. I have a pair of JBL 250TI's and these L7's keep on truckin right on up them. Soundstage/imaging was just awesome WOW!!! Power amplifier rating is 450 watts. I would highly recommend L7's if you like big tall speakers. I had a pair of AR-9's way back when, of which also had the woofers on the side, but were way more power hungry that these. If you have the room these are magic to the ears, Only had these for 4 months now and when friends come over I watch jaws drop. I get that where can I get a pair look, get back Jack these are not for sale. These are keepers for sure.

Strength:

Dynamic sound for all my music styles.

Weakness:

They are pretty large.

I bought these from a seller on Craig's List for $250 in 2006. My wife about had a heart attach when I put them in our living room due to their size. I was more impressed with the sound quality of these speakers than I was afraid of what would happen if I kept them, so I put my foot down. 2 years later and she quit complaining about their size and I find her listening to here favorite music when I come home. I have a Sansui G-9000 that feeds these speakers and I have to say I have never been happier with a system . . . ever.

Casual Listener

I am a casual listner and cannot profess to be well versed in audio. However, I was able to purchase two sets of L7s ($750 per pair) )and a set of L5s ($300 pair) and use the L7/L5 combination for home theatre. I am very happy with the sound. I probably paid too much for the speakers, but I live on a tiny island in Micronesia (Saipan) and feel fortunate that I was able to obtain them.

Strength:

Power handling, clarity, imaging, sound stage, bass response, reliability

Weakness:

Heavy, initial set up

These speakers require a little work to get properly placed and balanced, especially in the odd rooms I've had them in, but with a little work, they've always been star performers. They've been rock solid reliable. Their sound quality is as good today as the first day I fired them up (and I've moved them 6 times, including cross country). They've performed well with a variety of receivers/amps from modest 50w/ch) to magnificant (200w/ch), and they've gone from solo performers in a modest stereo system to the bi-wired fronts on a Dolby Digital home theater. Whenever I've audtioned other speakers to replace them, I end up saying "No" and keep the JBLs.

Strength:

Detailed and balanced sound Rock-solid construction High quality components Bi-wireable Bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weakness:

Black ash finish chips easily

I''ve had these speakers for a little while now and have been really enjoying them so far. I agree with the other reviewers who say that the L7''s would make good studio monitors. Like good studio monitors, they are exceptionally detailed, accurate and transparent. However, unlike alot of studio monitors, they aren''t overly bright or "sterile" sounding. I really appreciate loudspeakers that reproduce all of the music''s fine details, even at the expense of revealing poorly recorded material. I''ll take accuracy over coloration any day. The bass reproduction is warm yet well defined. The midrange is smooth and transparent. Yes, the high frequencies are on the bright side, but not unpleasantly bright or fatiguing, at least not to my ears. Imaging is very good if you experiment with speaker placement. These speakers definately like to have some power thrown their way. At first, I powered my L7''s with a McIntosh 1700 Receiver(40 WPC). The power rating of the Mac is very conservative and the speakers sounded good, but there was something missing. Next, I tried my Pioneer SX980 receiver (80 WPC). I definately noticed an improvement in overall dynamics and lower frequency reproduction. For lack of a better description, the L7''s sounded more "alive". Still not satisfied, I hooked up a Sansui AU-D11 mk11 integrated amp(130 WPC) and again noticed an overall improvement, especially when it came to lower level resolution. Of course, these improvements could also be attributed to the curcuit designs/tonal characteristics of the individual units. I installed Target adjustable spikes and they seem to have tightened up the bass a bit. I prefer them over the plastic bases that they came with. I''m a JBL fan and have not been disappointed by the L7''s. Incidently, for a good laugh, check out Chris Tucker''s reviews(yes there''s two of them!) on this page. I think that he either got a defective pair of L7''s or he has a defective pair of ears! We all differ when it comes to tonal preferences, but to totally trash such a high quality product only makes you look like an arrogant fool. You can have a butt-load of pricey hardware and throw around a bunch of fancy terminology, but that doesn''t make you an audiophile.

Strength:

Strong Bass, great mid-range, Bi-amp capable

Weakness:

One speaker was delivered from Circuit City dented w. a faulty woofer.

I've had these speakers for about 3 years new and they are great and I am very satisfied.

Impressive bass and nice, clear highs; JBL is usually a little bright. Mid range is is nicely covered by two drivers per speaker.

The speaker are used for home theater and sound impressive without a subwoofer in the system.

Price wise, they a bit more affordable than the higher end brands out there.

Strength:

Very good overall speakers, esp. for home theater setup that will be used for music listening also

Weakness:

Nothing for the price, but people might have a problem with placing them right, but thats no fault of the speakers! themself.

For the price these speakers are outstanding, they easely compare to much more expensive speakers well over the 5000$ mark if set up propperly. The problem with most of the reviews here at Audio Review.com that put these speakers down is that they do not mention the fact that these speakers must be correctly set up. The owners manual especially states how to set them up and if you do not do this or do not have a large enough listening area to put them in, you can not use them propperly. It is obvious that these reviewers have not done their homework right or do not have the right enviorment for these speakers in the first place. They need space and do not take kindly to equipment racks, large TV´s, Cabinets etc being crampt up close to them. As their 12" woofers shoot from their sides toward each other when properly set up it is no wonder that the usual "stuff" put between speakers in a "usual" home envirorment might cause problems were space is scarce. They need space between them. It took me a few weeks of inching these speakers a little back and forth before I found my rooms "best spot" for these speakers.
I use the JBL L7 as main speakers in my maine home theater setup with Meridian 565 processor, NAD power amplifiers, JBL L150 tower rear´s, Plok m-3 side effects, and surprisingly a Martin Logan Cinema Center speaker. I say surprisingly because the Martin Logan is a electrostatic speaker and you might think that the two types would not mix well. But the fact is that the Center is a hybrid of both worlds as it has two conventional 5,25" woofers that seem to blend quite well with the L7´s. I usually use the Meridians Trifield mode (front and center united in a massive musical "whole") for musical listening and it is quite remarkable how well these speakers blend considering their origins. The brunt of the midrange is carried by the ML but the L7´s back it up quite well. For Home Cinema viewing I have found that the L7´s carrie quite enough bass so there is no need for a subwoofer. I have tried one and found it to be a total case of "overkill" as the L7´s can realy shake the foundations quite well on their own if powered correctly (Just ask my neighbours, in the next house!).
I have another setup made mainly up of JBL SVA speakers (see similar product coment above) and a SONY 930 amp/receiver for casual listening. No contest there.
The end result is that the L7 propperly set up with first class equipment is outstanding. You can always find "better" speakes at higer price levels but I know of no better speakers at the price with such overall qualificatons. If I would get new main speakers I would have to look for speaker over the 5000$ to make a diffrence. The larger Martin Logans might just do that, but at the moment I am quite pleased with my speaker setup. Especially after I tested it with the new Meridian 596 DVD player. It is awsome. The JBL L7 get my best rating for the price.
