Strength:

Great sub-bass/mid bass response, right out of the box. Dial in the highs/mids with Freq. adj. Dual protection, 99.9% indestructable. Buy that old set on eBay and have them refoamed, you won't be sorry.

Weakness:

HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY. Find a good spot for them, acoustically speaking, set them on a thick, concrete slab...and leave them.

This is actually a review of Cerwin Vega's D-7 series floor speaker, the D-9's little brother. Little really is'nt the best choice. These speakers are still over 3 feet tall, and heavy as a small car. They house a 12" woofer(massive magnet), 2 - 4" mids, and tweeter horn. Speakers have Freq. adjustment, and are both fuse and circuit breaker protected. The twins are rated at 250W/4 Ohm, so it takes less power to drive them, resulting in more music, less distortion and noise. I built my home sterio new in 1985, Cerwin Vega D-7's wired to a Kenwood 400W M2 amp and C2 pre-amp. I added ADC EQ's, one for each channel. ADC equalizers offer a pink noise generator, allowing you to set each board at "flat line" for perfect acoustics...anywhere. The CV's are nearly 20 and will accept ALL challenges. I still have to set the twins on marble slabs to keep the lamps and pictures in place.

I have listened to many systems considering an upgrade. Audio Research, Bose, Carver, JBL, Klipsch, Polk, but nothing compares to my Vegas.

Strength:

fantastic bass. Nearly indestructible with circuit breakers and fuses. They handle 350 wpc like a champ.

Weakness:

Won't fit in many cars. You must not mind moving around the equivalent of a large man. I've carried these many times by myself. It was no fun. Mids and highs need help.

I had them and a pair of JBL 12" hooked to a Carver 1.5t. It would bring down the drywall from the ceiling with fantastic bass response. I haven't see a sub that can compare. Built very solid.

The only speakers I've heard that put out more bass were a pair of unlimited wattage, 6'0 Polk Audio towers. But at 1/4 the cost or less, the D-9s are great.

Strength:

Huge Bass! Virtually indestructible and hard to blow.

Weakness:

Not the greatest highs, but i don't need them for that anyway.

These speakers are great! They are really big, but that is good, because that makes them sturdy and hard to steal. We use them to DJ and they sound just as good as any "professional" speaker their size. My dad paid a couple thousand dollars to have some speakers custom made, there were four 12" speakers and two of these Vegas blow them away. We put handles and grilles on them and they have taken the abuse of being on the road pretty dang good. I use these on the bottom and stack a pair of SPL 15" speakers on top for bass reinforcement and highs, and they sound awesome. I don't care what people about their wimpy little subwoofer systems, this is the real thing.

Strength:

BASS!!!! Strong mid and treble They are HUGE!!

Weakness:

They are HUGE!! But the only reason thats a weakness is because I can't move them by myself. (100 lbs each)

OH MY GOD!! - That is the only thing to say about these. The bass that these speakers punch out will absolutely blow you away. It is amazing. Also, the dual 6 inch midranges and the horn tweeter are very clear and powerful. In many 15" speakers the high end is covered up by the sub. The D-9's do a very good job of not doing that. The tweeter is very overpowering at some points which is a good thing i suppose. I had mine reconed and they sounded even better. Unfortunately, I no longer own these. I sold them and later purchased the new Cerwin-Vega! LS-12 tower speakers. I had heard from many people that they don't make the Vegas like they used to. Well I am here to tell you they do and even better at that. Even though the LS-12 only has a 12" sub it is right up there with the D-9 when it comes to bass. I love my D-9's and really wish I still had them. These are by far the rarest pair of CV's to find in good shape. But if you ever do come across a pair. BUY THEM!! You won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Very flat response at high volume. 15" woofers really move the air and genuinely shake you. Also very clear even at very high volume if eq. correctly. The woofers have huge magnets and strong, cast aluminum baskets to support them. Cheaper made speakers have poor stamped baskets that sag over time and wear your voice coil.

Weakness:

Very, very big. Huge speakers don't have the popularity they had 20 years ago. I couldn't care less. Highs are over powering at high volume without an EQ.

In 1985 I cashed some bonds (I was 17) and paid 580.00 for the D-9 pair. I only had 105 watts/channel. The bass shook my face. The high end dbs had to be lowered though. I got an AudioControl eq (in 85) to remedy and these speakers sounded incredible. I still own these speakers 18 years later and they still shake my face. I just replaced a tweeter for $25. Cerwin Vega always made the best speaker for the money. My EQ has a white noise generator with a microphone to test the speaker roll off. They start to roll off at 60 Hz (moderate volume)with no db gain from the eq. They can be made flat with the eq down to 32 hz (My spectrum analyzer does not go lower). They are huge and heavy but if you want flat response at HIGH VOLUME you can't use little satellite/sub combo's. They still make a compatible speaker today. It is called the E-715. It has a 15 sub, one (not two) mid horn and a tweeter. Same speaker basically.

Nothing for the price. I'd put my old D-9's to any $1000 pair of fancy home speakers from Tweeter Etc today (If you could get a pair that cheap).

Strength:

Fat Bass! Adequate mid and highs.

Weakness:

Mid to highs. Definitely, not for the audiophile.

Back in 1984, I was serving in the U.S. Navy. While I was on deployment, in the Mediterranean Sea, my ship (U.S.S. Saratoga, CV-60)pulled into Naples, Italy for a liberty call. I'd always had heard that the NATO base located in Naples, was renowned for it's high fidelity equipment store. Well, I oped a bus up to the base to check out some speakers. They pretty much had all the high end names (Klipsch, JBL, Infinity, etc.). But I couldn't get over the Cerwin Vega, D-9L's. I was a semi-pro drummer prior to my enlistment, so I had a heavy lean towards the bottom end of the music scale. I was blown away by the tremendous 15" woofers. I mean these things will rearrange your furniture. I ended up buying them, not realizing how I was going to get them back to the USA! I ended up carrying them, one at a time, back to the ship. I ended up getting chewed out for not considering the space limitations on board the ship. But, my shop supervisors relented and we found space in our workcenter for the speakers. You have to realize, that these speakers are the size of small refrigerators. Never mind the boxes! I didn't get a chance to listen to them until I got out of the Navy in '85. I hooked them up to a Marantz SR 8100DC receiver. They sounded grand! I could put the volume on 10 and they sounded clear. I've owned this pair, for going on 18 years and I've yet to hear anything, except for professional sound equipment, that could touch these. I even went out and bought a pair of Audio Centron PA cabinets, because I have small children and I didn't want them to mess with my CV's! So if you're into the low end of the sound spectrum and you aren't too picky on the mid to high end, these are the cat's ass!

they are heavy so you can stack them on top of each other.

Weakness:

they dont have boobs

Everyone knows in electronics, if you can pick it with one hand and dust under it, it isnt worth the dust your picking it up for!period. I have four d-9''s two where given to me and two i bought. I also have a sx 1980 pushing them i would not trade them for a million doller surround sound plastic crap. If any of you have them hook up to your tv put in jurrasic park 3 and wait until the cell phone rings on the movie (volume up) that will show you how high those horns will go. New tecnology everyone says. I laugh.
