Strength:

Bass, Bass, and more Bass!!!!

Weakness:

Mid's & Highs a little weak although the D-9's do have tone controls, Infinity has me spoiled.

I bought these off of a guy in Phoenix for a hundred bucks. The subs needed re-foaming that cost another hundred bucks. Okay I am running these off an Adcom GFA-555 power amp, and the bass is incredible. These CV's get crazy loud with no distortion. If you like bass heavy music then you would love to have a pair of these in your room. The only bad thing I would say is that the mids and highs on them are not all that great. I have a pair of Infinity Primus 360's next to the D-9's and a pair of Infinity SM-155's stacked on top. The Mid and High frequencies on the Infinity's sound fantastic and now with that Cerwin Vega bass
all I can say is WOW.
So my home theater set-up consists of Infinity Primus C25(center), Primus 360's(LF,RF) Infinity SM-155's(LF,RF) Cerwin-Vega! D-9's(LF,RF) Primus 160's(LS,RS) and an Infinity PS-12 powered subwoofer. The SM-155's and the D-9's are running off an Adcom power amp and the Primus speakers are running off of my Pioneer reciever. (VSX-1015TX).
Music and Movies sound great. If you are like me and enjoy your music loud like there is a rock concert in your living room or whenever you are watching a movie and you duck whenever bullets start to fly and hit the deck whenever something explodes. (Depth -charges in U-571 anyone!) Then I strongly suggest you add a pair of these to your set-up. For $200.00 total these were a welcome addition to mine.

Strength:

Everything! Clean, powerful, a real joy. Try these on the original Robocop. Yeah baby!

Weakness:

Probably the weight, but if you're not moving them constantly, no problem.

Take it from a full time musician/audiophyle, these are the ones that lead the pack. Unfortunately, Cerwin-Vega doesn't make anything like these anymore. Probably cost prohibitive. Grab them when you can find them. Close your eyes and let them take you to a place few will ever go...

Strength:

D-9's are brutal. They can pound out heavy-duty music with great clarity until it hurts.

Weakness:

You won't hear me complaining !

I LOVE my D-9's. Since ~1984, I have not come across any speakers that I would rather have to rattle my living room. I did, however, add a pair of tweeters (using a cap as a passive crossover) on the wall above the D-9's. After time (and kids butts) wreaked havoc on the foam surrounds, I have no alternate but to revive the D-9's with new surrounds.

Strength:

Big Bold sound...Great if you like to feel your music.

Weakness:

If you're into classical music, these probably are not what you are looking for.

I bought my D-9s in 1985, and never looked back. The bass is incredible, and nothing approaches the classic D-9s full sound, nor have I seen anything on todays market that compares. I power them with the 'classic' top of the line PioneerVSX 9500s, and the power and tight bass they deliver is incredible. I dont listen to music as much as when I was in college, but these speakers get lots of use as part of my home theater system, and these are great for movies if you like to 'FEEL' the movie like being in a theater. I have been known to shake things off the walls on occasion:) After nearly 20 years of good use(just today)I was shopping for new speakers at BestBuy, Circuit City, and Ultimate Electronics because my 15" woofers are in need of some conework. I have cracking around the edges of the 15" woofers. (You know....the soft flexible part around the edges?) The material has begun breaking down with age, and I figured that I might as well buy new and upgrade.....right?? WRONG!!!!!!!! Nothing comes close!!! After my shortlived attempt at upgrading, I found a service center nearby, and I will get them repaired. Wow.........I didnt realize how good these are, until I looked seriously into replacing them. Ok, really did know how good they are, but I was shocked at how "BAD" the new technology speakers are. Do NOT listen to the salesman in the store who will try to tell you that his little 40lb towers with twin 6" woofers can compete with D-9s. When he told me that in the store, I almost laughed out loud. With the combinition of the built in fuse and quick reset tweeter, these babies are indestructable. They have survived DJ'ing dances from when I was in HS, countless wild college parties, and when I get the conework done, they may just last until I retire...."laugh".

Strength:

That Thunderous Cerwin bass, high power handling, earspiltting db's. They play LOUD AND CLEAR! Can be had for a song on e-bay

Weakness:

Must have understanding neighbors. What Weaknesses ? NONE

Everybody Thinks I'm crazy. They say I've gone Back To The Future! Well I tried The future and frankly to be blunt I thought it stunk. I've Sold My overpriced, overhyped (by the salesperson)5.1 sat/sub system. After I seen a pair of cerwin D9's on e-bay for a ridiculous price(I owned a pair previously)After purchasing Them I hooked them up to a kenwood basic M2A and literally Shook the foundation to My house. While My subwoofer(15 Inch JBL by the way)was great It seemed to lack the punch of the D9's. That Cerwin Bass is hard to beat. I've Recently purchased a pair of D5's for my rear channel speakers.I'm running the D9's thru a Kenwood C2 Preamp,Kenwood M2a power amp,BSR 5000 eq reverb/delay,cerwin vega turbo chargers, jvc xlr5000 cd recorder And along with the D5's The sound Is just Spectaculer! The Eq Along with turbo charger really helps bring out the best in these awesome Beasts. Don't get Me wrong There Are alot of great sat/sub systems out there. But I'll Take the Thunderous Bass, velvet Midrage, and crisp highs of the D9's anyday.

Strength:

Very high SPL (efficient), very good freq. responce (esp. when moded) For the price they can not be beaten- And FYI I also have B&W's (603's) and a pair of PSB Stratus golds, the "new Cerwins" kill both the previous in ALL aspects. I couldnt believe it after I first moded them.

Weakness:

cheap mids, and a low cost vinyl/mdf finish but hey after a few mods these things are great. After all this time with them (15yrs or so) I do wish they were taller and more "narrow" but otherwise- none.

Well what can be said about the D-9's that hasnt been already covered? BASS true, but the high end and mids are pretty crappy with real high quality amplifer(s) and gear. To solve this (after 15 years of pounding on them) I decided to relace the mids and tweeters, mod the crossovers and add a bit of reinforcement to the cabs. You will not believe what a Morel MDT-30 or MDT-37 soft dome(s) (the latter is a semi-horn soft dome) and a pair of Vifa Dm-75's 3" soft domes, and as well I tried a pair of Hi-Vi 6" kevlar w/phase plugs. Verdict? Use the MDT-37 semi horn soft dome, 1 vifa 3" soft dome and 1 Hi-VI 6", you want audiophile sound with rock and roll bass extention- this will do it trust me you will be amazed, esp. if you have good quality power amps and other gear. (I hit these with well over 1000wpc per side, bi-amp'd and they just smile)

Strength:

versatility - ability to play a wide range of music.

Weakness:

THe more speakers I listen to, the more I realize that there really aren't any glaring weaknesses. I am tempted to rebuild the cabinets with a high density MDF though.

Cerwin Vega d-9. I bought them to replace some high end Polk Audio stuff because the Polks could only play half my music. The d-9s can be played at very high volume without losing definition. Just what I wanted for the rock/reggae side of my collection. They also produce a very good soundstage and accurately reproduce classical music including difficult things like a solo piano and voice. I've yet to come across something for less than 5k a speaker that can compete. Amazing speakers especially considering the price. Although 1,000 seemed a lot in 1984 when I bought them. I drive my d-9s with an adcom preamp and 200 watt per channel amp.

Strength:

Good with high power, good with low power. good all around, great bass.

Weakness:

Very Heavy and large, but that comes with the 15" woofer anyway. Really no weakness. Mine are unfortunatly for sale, let me know if you are interested. No more room with the new baby, and no more loud either. She just got me a pair of headphones instead.

Can't really put it into words. It's a sad day, the wife says move the D-9's. These speakeres have been with me since 1986, and they have been working great all the time. These things rocked, rock, and will continue to rock. I have had these through colllege, marriage, and kids and they are like the Energizer bunny. I was runing these with 2 400 watt Carver cubes, each running mono at 400 watts.(800 total) These speakers will play Rush and Metallica clean and loud till your ears bleed. I recently had the edges re-foamed, and they will play for another 15 years I suspect.

Strength:

Clean sound from bottom to top. Bass midrange and highs cleanly matched

Weakness:

If you know of one please e-mail me.

My neighbors moved in from california, and they brought 8 of the d-9s with them. One brother had four and the other brother had four, they each had a pioneer sx-1980 hooked up to them. Lets just say that i had a loud childhood. They moved away and now im on a mission to get the same setup, i currently have four d-9s and a realistic sta 2300, 125wpc not to bad. I am saving for a sx 1980. I wouldnt give up these speakers for nothing, they are crisp clear at low volume and very clear sounding at high volume (sx 1980 max out) if any of you know or heard a 1980 you would understand.
