Strength:

INCREDIBLE SOUND FOR THE $1000.00 PRICE RANGE

Weakness:

COULD USE ACTUAL SPEAKER GRILLS FOR BETTER PROTECTION

I GOT THE 965'S ALONG WITH THE VR 910 CENTER, AND CR 7'S FOR SURROUNDS(THE VRS PRO IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE). AT $1500.00 FOR EVERYTHING I THINK I GOT A QUALITY 5.1 SETUP. THE BASS IS ASTONISHING, MID'S CLEAR, AND HIGH'S CRISP. I POPPED THE MATRIX IN MY NEW DVD PLAYER THAT I HAD TO GET TO FINISH MY SYSTEM, AND WAS BLOWN AWAY WITH THE DOLBY DIGITAL SOUND COMING FROM THESE BA'S. I WOULD RECOMMEND THESE SPEAKERS VERY HIGHLY. NO ONE WOULD BE DISAPPOINTED

Strength:

Awesome mids and highs, and incredible bass. Incredible accuracy in sound reproduction.

Weakness:

Absolutely None!

I spent a lot of time researching speakers to find the best one, and I found it. I read tons of reviews, articles, ratings, tests, but most importantly, I listened to them. I tested out several of the ones that were rated at the top around the same price range, including Polks, Infinitys, B&Ws, MKs, ... . Of these, none compared to the sound quality of the VR 965s. I even listened to many speakers, including the BA VR950, with a separate sub, and this one produced more powerful and accurate bass. I was amazed with how powerful the bass was on these speakers. I didn't think I would get that quality of bass with 2 8' woofers that were built in. I listened to all different kinds of music and DVDs, and the detail of the sound was stunning. I was simply blown away. I didn't think there would be such a noticeable difference between all the speakers I tested, but this one was noticeably better. I even compared these with several full surround system packages, including the Bose Acoustimass 15, and just these two speakers sounded better than the whole surround system package. Just a warning to all those looking to buy speakers out there: if you really want the best and most accurate sound, don't go for satellites. I strongly recommend getting floor standing speakers, even if you don't get these.

In addition, the quality of the construction of these speakers are top notch. The materials used, the cross over, the interconnects, the casing, are all very solid and of top quality as expected from Boston Acoustics.

I stronly recommend these speakers for everyone. You can't beat the value of these speakers at $1000 for the pair.

BASS! These Speakers Rock...

I purchased the AVR965s, CR6s(surrounds), AVR920(Center) for $1400.00. I have a Sony 61' HS10, and a Denon 881. These speakers bring the whole thing together. The sound is OUTSTANDING. You will not regret this purchase :)

Strength:

Looks good, slim and tall, sounds great, bass is awesome, mids & highs are superb, very sturdy

Weakness:

No grill to protect the speakers, bass control knob location

I have been looking around for about a year now for some speakers. I just purchased my home back in February and have been committed to setting up my home theater system. At first, I wanted the Boston System 9000 satellite speaker systems but changed my mind after doing more research. I'm sure the satellite speakers are nice, but it doesn't look quite as attractive as having floor standing speakers.

Size is an issue in my home theater room. I don't have much space so a speaker with a built in powered sub is ideal for me. There wasn't any real competition to the VR 965. As soon as I saw it at Myer-emco and then listen it to it, I was in love. I have been in love with for a year and finally have the money to go buy it. I got the salesman to take off $60, which isn't alot, but it will have to do. Even my wife, who is not into this sort of thing, thinks that the speakers sounds awesome. Man, when I brought it home and audition it, I was blown away. The bass... did I mention the bass... was unreal. It's a Boston Acoustic's speakers so what else can you expect from the mids/highs except for exceptional. I'm currently running these speakers with my pro-logic sony receiver. Imagine what it can do with the Onkyo TX-DS787, which I will buy within the next two weeks or so. I just hope my neighbor won't call the cops on me.

Honestly though, these speakers are awesome.

Strength:

I was a little doubtful as to how well the little 8 inch subwoofers would perform with only 80 watts, but i have been shocked. They put out deeper, cleaner and almost louder bass than my 12 inch 250 watt jbl, unbeleivable. Also the tweeter that they use has unreal clarity. I've heard Pink Floyd "The Wall" probably 1000 times in my lifetime and there were several sounds that i had never noticed before thanks to the tweeters. I would recomend these speakers to anyone. The appearance is also nice, they are very slim and and have a glossy black finish on the top, they come with floor spikes. Oh one more thing about the subwoofer i liked was the fact that the subwoofer was wired into the crossover so you can just run the left and right channels as normal to the speakers and they will drive the subwoofer or if you like you can wire for the subwoofer channel, its up to you, alot of other combo speakers i looked at did not have this option. I could go on and on about these speakers but i will finish with this, Thanks to these speakers i have a whole new appreciation for my music collection

Weakness:

the only weakness I can come up with is the mid range does occasionally lack something. The only reason why i say this is no speaker is perfect so i found the only thing i could think of. It just gets a little colored from time to time.

well i think i pretty much said it all in the strength section but i will say a little more. The subwoofers are simply amazing. When i went and saw them in the showroom they had this huge room (50'x75 or so) and they still filled the whole room with bass, although the salesman thought it was funny when i said "theres subwoofers in these?". I said that not because the amount of bass wasnt there rather the bass just sound to well blended to possibly be a subwoofer. One thing you may want to keep in mind with these speakers however is if you have a pet or kids is that it doesnt have a grill per say but it has a the cloth used on a grill that goes all the way around the speaker top to bottom, so if you have a cat or dog that likes to lick or scratch, do not get these speakers unless you have a room they cannot get into or unless they are trusted because they are definetly a tempting target. But i am giving these 5's cause anything else would be a lie.
When looking at these i listened to psb, kef, mirage, polk, infinity, klipsch and a couple others i cant remember at the time but there was never a question as to what kind of speakers i was getting after i heard these.

Clarity, bass, looks

Weakness:

Bass adjustment knob on back

These speakers are absolutely amazing. The bass response from the subs are just magnificant without any distortion. You definitaley don't need a separate sub with htese speakers. Although there are only 2 other speakers, I am constantly amazed at the clarity of what is coming out of my steareo. I have been listening to CDs that I know inside out from the 60s and 70s and I turn my head around because I just heard something that I never heard before. Folks, run, don't walk, and get these speakers.

Strength:

Exceptionally clear mids

Weakness:

Dumb "sock" covering and location of sub level knob

WOW! The ONLY things that aren't perfect about this speaker are two little mechanical details. As far as THE SOUND goes they just can't be beat for anything in their price range. I listen to everything from Broadway recordings to Metallica and I haven't found anything they didn't sound great on yet. I'm trying to build a pretty good system that can handle both home theater and more serious musical content, and this solves my front speaker problem! I was kind of worried about "only" 8" subs and 4" mids: I shouldn't have been. The subs put out PLENTY of bass. In fact, I have to keep the level turned down a bit so I don't disturb the rest of the household. Voices are ESPECIALLY clear. I even got mine second hand for under $600! :) I'm doing the value rating based even on the full list price, but I'm NOT counting the little mechanical flaws against them. When talking about speakers THE SOUND is almost the only thing that counts, and even appearance (they look great, BTW) is more important than the minor annoyances found here.

Strength:

The bass kills!!!

Weakness:

Sock sucks, the look is simple yet ugly.

Probably one of the best pair of speakers you can use for your home theathre... cinemas suck, in fact - you cannot lay on a bed, drink wine, eat lasagna and adjust volume level. I definitely recommend them for a movie watcher. Don't think so as for classics listeners - these speakers are kinda mainstream, for hip-hop and industrial.

I use Yamaha RX-V520 and Monster cables for $1.5/feet. Sounds fine.

Strength:

Quality, price, mid-range, acurate bass

Weakness:

Location of power knob for sub

The mid range and bass are incredible at this price point. The high's are a bit bright -- standard BA signature. Not a big bass freak, so the powered sub didn't attract me to this model. However, now that I've taken them home and played around... I'm hooked! Excellent depth, clarity and imaging. All this from an 80W powered sub... not bad.

Let's face it: musical tastes are very subjective and system set-up (brands) impact upon speaker performance more than any other factor. The strength of BA's is their ability to extract music with clarity and an extremely natural flavor, regardless of components. If you want that kind of detailing and clarity, then BA's will be worth investigating. If your system is going to change or certain components are up for replacement, then these speakers will prove even more valuable -- they will produce no matter what you have hooked up. However, garbage in... garbage out!

When you audition BA's bring your own music... something familiar to you and something you love. Don't listen to the speaker, hear the music. Don't let the help from the store switch you back and forth between brands... just enjoy the level of detail and imaging. Then switch to a different brand and decide for yourself.

Bottom line: Dollar-for-dollar you can not beat the 965's performance. At $1,000 you are getting an exceptional speaker that will rival many "high-end" brands. With the exception of B&W, you will not find anything (same price range!) close to the 965's level. An excellent speaker for those who want to "step up" or have a limited budget, but not a limited appreciation for absoute music fidelity.

Weakness:

Very harsh highs,weak midrange

If you are building a home theater system these speakers might be for you. They have built in powered subwoofers, which saves alot of space. Music listening was a diffrent story. The subwoofer was boomy and the midrange was very very weak. The highs were very harsh and metallic sounding. The B&W DM601 S2 kills the Boston in terms of midrange clarity, smoother highs and imaging. It also costs less than half as much. Buy a set of these and a good sub and forget Boston.
