Strength:

Sound.....very clean and open

Weakness:

Bass response...but very respectable for a 6.5" driver

I have spent over a year looking for the right speakers. I first listened to the VR-M60's in Dec 1999 but didn't buy them at that time although I was very impressed with the sound coming from these small speakers. I originally ended up buying Polk's RT-800 (which are also good sounding speakers)but was never satisfied with them for music. I recently sold the Polk's and went back on the hunt for what I wanted. I had a budget of about $2000 for my mains and spent a great deal of time looking at speakers in this price range. I found several that were appealing but none that had that "magic" sound I was looking for. I stopped by the same store where I had heard the Boston's before and they were still on display. I spent a couple of hours listening and ended up walking out with them and a pair of 28" stands. I have made very few audio purchases where I didn't end up second guessing myself within a couple of weeks but this is one purchase I am very satisfied with. I plan on picking up a second set for surrounds and the matching center and sub over the next several months to complete my system. I have spent more time just listening to music over the last couple of months than I have in the last year. All my CD's sound better. The cherry finish is a very nice contrast to the typical black boxes and certainly made the wife happy. I don't feel you can wrong with these speakers.

Strength:

Lows to highs are as clear as can be

Weakness:

Require really good stands (read heavy)

I have the VR M60's in front along with a VR12 Center, in the rear I use VR M50's. The fronts and the rears are bi-wired and despite claims by many it does make a difference. The build quality on these these speakers are top notch. Nice binding posts, although a wrench is really required to cinch them down tight. The VR M50's obviously don't have as much bottom end but that is okay for rears. On PCM stereo stuff the sound stage is very well defined. I have the speakers sitting about 12 feet apart and the height of the tweeter is at 48 inches. The are screwed to 3 inch diameter stands filled with 25 pound of lead shot. The speakers are driven by a Sony DA50ES receiver with M-series bi-wires. with th subwoofer turned off these speakers do a decent job of producing low frequencies. Although nothing earth shattering. Simply put they are crystal clear down to about 80hz. Turn the sub back on (Velodyne HGS12) and heaven is attainable. Detail comes out even with PCM, switch to analog and its the same. I can't imagine how good these would sound with SACD or DVD-Audio. On DTS or DD they perform just as well. Detail and sound placement is as precise as I have heard. Clarity of gunshots and effects in the Matrix DVD are superb. Music from the Last of the Mohicans DVD comes accross better than the CD.

While they are not as good as some of the high end stuf I auditioned, like a pair on Natilus' for $800/pair they are a bargain and definetly worth a listen if you can find a local dealer.

Strength:

Tweeter, Bass response, Accuracy

Weakness:

Absolutely None

I couldn't believe the first time I heard these speakers. I knew that whatever the price was I had to have them. I have B&W CDM7nt's for my primary Home Theater, but after hearing these I set up a Home theater in my bedroom as well. I'm using a PV 600 subwoofer, but for music you really don't need it. Just let these little jewels run. I couldn't be happier, and they give the B&W's a run for their money at half the price. Buy a pair and enjoy!

Strength:

Treble

Weakness:

None so far

I've been having problems finding speakers that matched up with my system. I have a small room (12' x 10') that has caused most speakers to sound awful, especially in the upper regions. I finally found the Boston's - perfect for my room. The trble is clear with smooth midrange nad very reasonable bass for a small speaker. Go check them out - I don't think you'll be dissapointed if your in the market for speakers in the 1k range.

Strength:

Sound like music dipped in honey.

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet.

When we bought our house a year ago, I installed my trusty Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble system thinking I had a killer sys. After a couple of weekd, I met an audiophile that got me hooked on the idea of better equipment. I found the guys at Sound Advice and began a three month odyssey to find the right speakers to pair with a new Sony 9000ES Preamp/Amp setup. I took home and kept the B&W 602s and then exchanged them for the 603 floor standers and then the NHTs. I really liked the NHT (floor standing model-not powered) but the wife hated the piano finish (within 30 minutes it had fingerprints galore just from setup), so I packed them up after a week and took them back. I told the guy honestly that I loved the sound, but needed a stand mounted and more attractive speaker, or I may as well keep the Cambridges (which by now I could not have possibly lived with). He steered me to the Bostons, even though they were a bit more than I wanted to spend. We listened and I was mesmerized at the sound coming from this small cabinet. I took them home, bought some quality stands and immediately began to listen with the wife- we were in love. Each note rolled off of these as if "dipped in honey" to quote my wife. We loved them so much, we began to listen much more to music than movies (although they are great at that too, mated with a sub). We have been very happy with them ever since. They are detailed and make the sound seem effortless.
Now, a year later, we are setting up a music only room and I began to look for HT speakers to replace the VRMs as they are going to the music room. Since I had never bought the center channel and I have good dipole surrounds, I began to look at B&Ws and others again. Well, I am now a life long Boston fan as long as they keep making products as now. Nothing compared to the Bostons, so I ended up with VR950s and a VR center for the HT- they blew away the others- it must be that tweeter...

Strength:

Clean sound

Weakness:

lacks bass

I bought these a few months back and was totally amazed by them. I was out to buy B&Ws but when I heard these as A/B the Bostons were a real treat. The down side is the bass factor but then for bookshelves you do not expect anything better for the price. My amp right now is a yamaha a595 which I feel does not really drive them to what they are capable of. All in all a brilliant pair of speakers just needs a matching Boston sub to really rock you.
