Strength:

Nice decor. A great bedroom set up.

Weakness:

Unable to emit high treble or decent mid bass (and there is nothing below 60 Hz).

Yes, it uses a full range paper cone. When I first discovered music -- and I thought it so sweet -- I was a child sitting in the back seat of my father's LTD. So to me Bose' simple, full range cone produces natural tone of sweet rememberance. Given the price - performance ratio, it is kinda of a luxury, though.

You can probably assemble your own AM system with a trip to the Radio Shack. But it just does not feel the same, because by doing so you already admitted that deep within you want Bose.

Compact Size & Look Cool

Weakness:

Everything Else. Cheap Plastic. Cheap Speaker Cones. No Mid Range.

The Bose Systems are terrible. I had the AM-10 and it was bad. These AM systems are a total rip-off. They are cheaply made and are way overpirced. You pay $900 because of the mass market advertising costs that Bose shells out to brainwash people. To the average ear they may sound good, but withot mids the sytem is lacking. My advise is go get you some Wharfedale Modus 1.6 Tower Speakers off of Ubid for around $300 a pair(NEW). These retail for $1600 a pair. I bought two pairs and they are GREAT. These are high quality speakers that are not mass marketed. Nothing compares to great sounding towers.

Strength:

size,size,size...that the extent of it.

Weakness:

inferior technology coupled with outrageous prices...beware of the Bose Marketing Machine.

First off..Craig, get your head outta your a** and smell the coffee. Paper drivers(2 inchers no less)are old-school technology. Why don't you see paper drivers in high-quality speakers anymore? I think you know the answer to that question if you're not afraid to admit it. Also, Crutchfield is getting paid big bucks to carry the Bose line...don't kid yourself. The more they sell, the better their bottom line. They can't push the product if they tell the masses..."Bose Sucks"!
I've heard the AM-10 and several of their other systems in the stores(for extended periods of time) and a friend of mine has their AM-5 system in his home. I wasn't impressed! Bose would be acceptable if they slashed around 40-50% off their retail price and marketed them appropriately.
Take a look at the latest issue of Sound and Vision(Jan 01"). They have a comparison of four high-quality HT speaker systems...PSB,JBL,Polk,and M&K. All four received strong reviews and are LESS than the comparable Bose system. They're small so the size factor shouldn't enter into the equation unless you live in a cardboard box. You can also add the new Paradigm Cinema Series HT speaker package into the fray which retails for an astonishing $716! The Paradigm system has received some rave reviews in the HT mags...and for good reason. There's a slew of high-quality HT speaker packages that can blow Bose outta the water for same amount of money...or less. Def Tech, NHT,Boston Acoustics, Phase Tech,etc.,etc.etc. The list could go on forever.
Bose will continue to get smoked in here until they change their quality and pricing strategy.
Anti-Bose: Loved your review. You spoke for a lot of us.

my friend has an AM set and we were watching top gun at his house one day. when the f-14's where lunching off the deck the speakers started crackling from the intensity of the exhaust noise. i dont listen to music and movies at insane volumes; i do like them reasonably loud for a degree of realism, but the movie was not cranked up that high. the physical size of the speakers simply prevents them from handling any real kind of power, regardless of what few specs bose may offer.

i have read many of the reviews here and i see everyone touting the size and looks of the bose speakers. they say that nothing which is as small or looks as good can compare. i beg to differ...

if you ever seen and heard the anthony gallo acoustics nucleus micros you will know what i mean(there is a review of them on soundstage.com). they are small (4" diameter spheres) and very nice looking--you can pick from about 8 metallic colors to match your room, kind of like (this hurts to say it) an iMac (i publicly denounce this piece of plastic as an irresponsable excuse for a computing machine). they also come with some pretty good oxygen free, solid core copper wire and can mount anywhere with a 1/4" threaded hole in the rear.
i paid about $150/speaker, which means that for the same price as the bose, you still have $350 for a powered sub. my klipsch covers the spectrum nicely with the variable crossover(i have had some people actually get scared watching the dts gladiator dvd)

the best part about these is that they actually sound pretty good too. the sphereical design eliminates the standing waves and the midrange isnt half bad. turn up the crossover on the sub to about 150hz, and you've got a complete spectrum. i'd compare that system to the bose any day.

Hello Im Ed :-)
and I live in Mexico City

Yes, I got envolved with the Bose MKT deal, went to San Antonio TX and got into this Bose store, the salesman explained to me the differences between the systems, tested them, and finally got the Acumass 10
Why this?
OK...I got married almost 3 years ago, went to live into a small apt, and my new home theater room size is 2.86 x 4 meters! With my old setup it was almost impossible to see a movie with a sub (cerwin vega 12" powered) becuase the neighbor above complained twice about the "shaking" even at moderated levels or also hearing a movie at a high level it was too exagerated too much for that room; so, due to space and sound restrictions I went for the Acumass 10, also, another factor is that here in Mexico the prices are a complete joke. Expect to pay here in Mexico City for a Acummas 10 +$1400 arghhhh!!!!

So, I finished installing today, and waht can I say... for mi room size is perfect, sounds great, not too much bass, but i dont need more.

I didnt know about all this Bose war between haters and lovers, after I looked on the internet about what I bought and also this board, I have seen more haters than lovers, first I was sad to hear all the bad reviews, but what can I say... Im happy with my new sytem.

Again, if your home theater size is extreme small this choice is OK

In the future when we move to a large house and hope to have descent size Home theater, I will change the sytem :-)

cheers from Mexico

Ed :-)

I originally posted this to the Acoustiturd 5 board,
but these Acoustiturds are all the same:

Where to begin?

First of all, I want everyone to know this URL
http://www.geocities.com/trustnoho/boseframes.html
which has some interesting info on these speaker's
freq. response that Bose won't publish.

I've had a lot of exposure to these but have never written
a review. Howerver, I have warned many people to stay
away from Bose and to *listen* to *any* other speaker in
the store before buying. Had one guy (who also owns a pair
of Bose 901s, BTW) go to an AV store to buy these for a
home theater setup because "Bose is the finest speaker in
the world", but after taking my advice he bought a pair of
Boston Acoustic speakers at a fraction of the cost instead
("They sounded much better, no comparison.") The salesman
told him that he would make more money by selling the Bose,
but encouraged him to listen to other speakers and make up
his own mind-- and he did...this was NOW Audio/Video, BTW.
I guess the Bose marketing gestapo's will now decend on
NOW, but that's OK, they should NOT be selling Bose in a
Hi-Fi shop anyway (they are the local Martin Logan dealers
for heaven's sake!)

As for my own experiences, these speakers truly sould like
clock radio speakers when compared to any other speaker.
Back when Best Buy had a speaker room with a console set up
in the middle that allowed you to select different speakers
by *number* I was switching through each of the 20 or so
speakers one by one-- I had NO idea which speaker I was
listening to. When I was done, I hunted down which ones
sounded "best" and "worst". The "best" turned out to be
a KLH $30/pair, the worst? You guessed it, a Bose AM5 at
$899/pair! No lie. At the time I hadn't been exposed to
the Bose's marketing propaganda machine so I had no
preconceived ideas about Bose either good nor bad. I just
figured anyone could tell they sucked (no other word for
it).

I learned about Bose's marketing machine by listening to
the infected people (like the guy above who owned the 901's
and was going to buy these audio turds solely because of
Bose's reputation). I know another guy who bought these
triumphs in audio research technology at Sam's Club. He
too was buying based on "reputation". After he got them
all set up, I had the misfortune to hear Jurassic Park on
them. It sounded like you'd expect-- shrill little clock
radio speakers hanging on the wall with a warm, muddy,
"room filling" bass that was clearly coming from the
"bass module". He didn't understand why this Bose miracle
wasn't producing the lows that he'd heard on the Kenwood
SW300 powered sub I've got in my setup. The reason is
because this bass module doesn't play any bass-- it only
goes down to 40Hz (see the URL above for actual frequency
response curves which Bose won't even publish). The bass
module is too busy filling in the mid range that the
cubes can't produce to be worried about bass.

Recently I was at Sam's Club and the had the Bose display
setup with the AM5 and the little silver lifestyle thing
setup with it. You know, the one with the "arms" going
behind you with the surround speakers on them. There was a
TV built into the display and you could push buttons to
hear a Bose marketing geek indoctrinate you right there on
the spot. What I found strange was when I pushed the
button to play "music", it actually sounded pretty good.
Nothing like I've heard from the setups I've seen at Best
Buy or at NOW Audio/Video or at Circuit City or at
people's home who own these. I tried to follow the signal
to see what was driving these speakers, but the case was
locked! There was no way to see what was actually driving
these speakers or if the signal was being EQed in some way
to make these sound passable. I've read of similar
experiences on this site stating that someone went to a
Bose outlet and heard a home theater setup that actually
sounded decent but when he asked the guy behind the
counter, he was told that the system was "tweaked" beyond
any semblance of what you as a consumer would receive if
you bought Bose speakers/system for yourself. There is
definitely something funny going on. BEWARE OF CANNED
BOSE DEMOS.

Unique Technology. Discrete Placement. Natural Sound Qualities

Weakness:

Light on Base. A Level Control on the Bass Module.

Let me make this short and sweet, and try to explain something to everyone.

Half of you guys don't know what "bright" means, and are just repeating it. Because the one thing these speakers are not is "bright". Flat maybe, but not bright. Let me explain why.

Most of you are used to listening to processed sound directed at you. Most speakers have woofers, midrange and tweeters. What these separate speakers do is take the frequencies it receives and exagerrates it to your ears. Many people think they have a good speaker if they get thumping bass and tingy highs at the same time. I ocassionally like that as well, but it doesn't mean the Bose is an inferior product.

Bose AM1x doesn't have any of those. No woofers. No Midrange speakers. No Tweeters. (I would repeat the last three sentences..., but for the sake of keeping it short). They have full-range drivers (a technological breakthough in itself). It "reproduces" the signals from your system. It may be one of the most versatile speaker systems available, in that it works well with everything. It gives you a natural sound that is not tingy or exagerrated (For all you Infinity or Cerwin Vega fans out there).

I am no Bose apologist, but I realize what the system was designed to do. And for most of you to compare the AM1x to Towers is almost ridiculous when you realize the complete different technologies employed.

If you bought the Bose because of the "Bose" name, without understanding Bose technology and the resulting sound, then I understand why most of you don't know why speaker placement is crucial. "Reflecting Sound"? - Forget A'bout It!

Let me give you guys a suggestion. Get a Polk, then you can invite friends over and brag about the loud sound. Better yet, Get the Vega... Arrrgh, Arrrgh, Arrrgh!!

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil Bose men. Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will shepperds the weak through the valley of audio darkness. For he is the truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my Gallo brothers.
