Strength:

Good Marketing Hype!!! Specially in the showroom

Weakness:

sound that will make you stressed in just listening for awhile. Expensive. You don't get your money's worth

please give yourself a big favor and listen to other speakers before buying another bose product.I had these speakers for 3 years thinking that i had the perfect speaker but that's what i thought boy was i wrong i listened to the dynaudio audience 42 and it's sound was incomparable with the 701's. not being unfair. after that audition with the dyn's o sold my 701 and bought a dynaudio audience 7 which is just a bookshelf. I can't believe the sound that came from that speaker low coloration detailed soundstage and the sound is indescribable. i also owned a lifstyle 5. lifestyle 25 and a 501. as you can see i was a bose fanatic when i was still a teenager. i felt that ive wasted my money for purchasing those bose products i should have bought something thats worth more for my money!!!

Strength:

Very powerful, clear sound The music surrounds you wherever you sit. Good looking Speakers

Weakness:

I had a vibration in one speaker that needed repair under warranty. A loose speaker. Now, I hear the same noise in the other speaker.

I am not a speaker expert. I like good sound and enjoy all types of music. My friend has Bose 901's and I've always thought they sounded great. When it came time to replace my speakers I didn't even shop around I ordered the 701's right online. I've read the bad reviews and can't undestand why? I sit in my living room with my eyes closed and listen to Weather Report or kick out CREED and RUSH. It all sounds great! The speakers are quiet when they are supposed to be, the highs are high, the voices are clear. You can pick out every instrument. Whereever you sit in the room the music surrounds you. I had a problem with a vibration in one speaker. It was covered under warranty. The technican told me that one of the speakers was loose. Now, on certain notes I hear the same sound in the other speaker, looks like another trip to the repair shop.

Strength:

Outstanding clarity. Anyone who knows music will attest to the exact reproduction capabilities of any bose speaker. The 701 is no exception.

Weakness:

Cannot get by without a sub in a home theatre. It would be a shame to buy a sub and see it's talent wasted with a limited crossover setting. The 701's just cannot get to that 40 to 20 Hz range.

I've had these speakers since 1996 and have enjoyed pounding them with as much wattage as I could afford. I have recently overhauled my entire audio back-end with upgraded amp and cables. I am now a firm believer in the mantra "if you feed the speaker with crap, it will play crap." I never felt the 701 series one speaker was less than spectacular, but they really came alive with the new equipment. If you buy these speakers, ditch the wire it comes with and get yourself some speaker stands "under 12 inch" and some good 10ga monster cable. Bose bashing just seems too trendy to believe. I have the real product and I believe that they are better than newer speakers that are available from competing manufacturers (b&w, AR, Klipsch, etc...)

Strength:

Excellent marketing campaigns....

Weakness:

Tinny sound, weak bass, sound unatural in general. Plastic!?! cabinets don't stand a chance.

Having worked at a Future Shop in Ontario, I've always wondered why people insist on buying Bose speakers. I've listened to the 701s extensively, and actually had a chance to compare them to my own speakers at a friend's house recently. Using an NAD T550 as the source, an NAD T761 as the amplifier, and doing, direct comparisons between his 701s (MSRP $900 US), and my Linn Keosas (MSRP $795 US), there was no comparison. The 701s sounded very tinny, with weak bass response, and terrible vocals. The sound was not rich at all, and was very similar to the sound from factory car speakers. For a lower price, upgrading to true audiophile speakers such as the Linns is a no-brainer. I only wish most stores were able to compare speakers such as these, instead of comparing Bose to JBL, Cerwin Vega, and other mass-market speakers. Compared to speakers within it's price range, most Bose products don't stand a chance. For close to $1000 US, don't bother with a speaker who's only good attribute is a glossy pamphlet.

Strength:

Great integration of the subwoofer. Rich, deep bass, and solid mids to highs. New design far better than older 701's.

Weakness:

Still a tower speaker which most will not want to have in their living room, but wow is their sound everywhere.

The new 701 (R) Direct/Reflecting Speakers from Bose are a great addition their family of speakers. For a modest price of $800 a pair, these speakers will rock a room for movies and provide a wide stage for all music selections. The integrated sub feature allows you to rid youself of the typical sixth piece of you HT. The new design sets an example of Bose's high quality research and design and complements my household well (even though we are talking about a tower speaker).

Strength:

Very clear sound

I'm no expert but I love music and I looked at many different speakers all played thru the same setup as soon as the new 701s were connected I could hear the difference in quality straight away. I was going to buy the 601s because I didn't have much money but when I heard the 701s I got the credit card out. I think the 601s were poor but they were alot cheaper. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Strength:

excellent all around speaker, extremely durable

Weakness:

there arent any considering the price.

I dont know how anyone could possibly rate these speakers lower than a 4. i have the 701 series 2 speakers, and they have excellent highs, powerful bass, and very good midrange too. i have listened to paradigm as well, and i honestly dont think that paradigm is as good as these speakers, the paradigms were much less efficient as my bose speakers, and it was even on the same receiver too. another great thing, about bose is the reliability. i have a friend that has 30 year old bose speakers, and they still sound very good. i blast my speakers all the time, and they are as good as the day i bought them. dont bash bose!!

Strength:

good highs and bass.good price at 900.00 you cant go wrong

Weakness:

Spring clips, papper cone woofers, foam surronds, slightlt boomy bass no numbers that show freq hz is at or bass volume.

These speakers are worth the money.I own a Harmon Kardon avr520 reciever 85 watts a channel the 701 series 2 speakers handled every drop of power flawless very clear at high volume the bass slightly boomy but good.I also own a alantic tecnology sub but dont need it with these speakers but i will keep it for extra bass.I didn`t like the foam surounds or the sring clips and the nobs that control the bass and LFE dont show what level it is at.I have 30 days to return the 701s but as of now i have no reason to.I really like them and would recomend them to any one who is lookin to spend only 900.00 dollars.

Strength:

Clarity, Bass, size (not to big or small)

Weakness:

Not really into Paper woofers for durability, Heavy with no where to grab.

When I bought my 701's I was debating between these and some similar Klipsch SP-1. I have always liked Klipsch because my parents have La Scala's and I like Bose because I have been very pleased with my 301's that I have had since 1997. I love the 701's very much. I wasnt out to pay a whole lot of money just something that sounded good for the price. One thing that I do like a lot is the fact I don't need to buy a seperate powered subwoofer for my system being that these speakers have powered subs in them and a connection for LFE. In the store I was not to thrilled about the sound but in the store the 301's didnt sound to good either. As soon as I hooked them up to my amp and put them in my house and made all my adjustments they sounded awesome. They suit my tastes very well, and I don't buy in to Bose hype, I don't really like there center channel but the only reason I bought it is for voice matching. I am not recommending them nor am I telling you not to buy them, just listen to the speakers and your needs. Every speaker has its own characteristic.

Strength:

Very clean and smooth response.

Weakness:

Needs the proper innerconnects and speaker cable to make these sound good.

I have been listening to all types of music for over 35 years.I have played in rock''n''roll bands as a lead singer and keyboard player, than got married and all that stopped. The Bose 701 series 2 speakers come as close to the type of sound that I have been looking for for many years.First of all the high end is very smooth, not over powering.Second of all the base is acurate on most recordings I have not heard a set of speakers in any price range that plays all music perfectly including Snell,Vanderstein,Klipch etc.Thirdly, the mid range is adequate, not the best I''ve heard but certainly not the worst, they are above average. One point to make is to use high quality interconnects between your compact disc player and amplifier to assure proper signal timing, secondly use high quality speaker cable not standard wire, this will assure good frequency to sound transfer. I also purchased at the same time a set of 901''s(series 6) and already had a set of 601(series 2)speakers.My amplifier is a Yamaha RXV3000,my cd player is a Conrad Johnson Reference series. After listening to Manfred Mann''s The roaring silence I had to write this review. All these speakers work well together to provide a excellent sound field. My cd collection is excess of over 700 cd''s and records are in excess of over 800.I thought long and hard on my choice of speakers knowing that these were going to be the last purchase of speakers I will buy.So far with all the music I have played through them it sounds great.I hope that you do not listen to all the negative response of any of these speakers but rather try them out for yourselves and make your own decision, good or bad. Good luck in your search for the right sound.
