This is for bosebasher and scumcoboshat. You know guys, these reviews are intended to aid in the decision to purchase. Why wuold you, bosebasher, write a review on the 601 when you've never owned it?You base your review on what your friend says.Just out of curiousity, what is your age?I ask because this is typical adolesent behavior. You should grow up.If you do not like the sound of the 601 then fine. But you have jotted down some garbage based on someone elses opinion. And to use words like (suck) to describe a speaker.I am sure your parents are proud.

Now I would like to say a few words about scumcobosehat. a .Grow up.Start using this site for the purpose that it was intended. And that is to give an honest opinion of a product. We are all impressed with your cables. We are all aware now that you do not like Bose products.I wonder if you have ever really owned or listened to the 601.Remco may have mailed you with some harsh words but I have not seen that for myself.I have seen your review, however. It is interesting that you are on this site writing about something that you claim is total garbage? Sounds like sour grapes to me.Maybe you should buy a pair of 601's and live with them a week or two and then write a real review. That would impress all of us as much as your speaker cables do.I would buy the 601 series two or three if I could get them under 300.00 I still say that they are more musical than alot of products of today costing twice as much.I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL PERSONS THAT GAVE AN HONEST REVIEW ON THE 601;WHETHER POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.Have a good day you two. Try to grow up a little before your next entry.

Where good 20 years ago.

Weakness:

Are terrible now.

Wow! That average was getting dangerously close to 4.5, which I cannot allow to happen, as these will end up in the hall of fame archive. Hey, Barney Gumble (BBBBBUUUURRRRPPP!!!!), this is for you bud! I want to come listen to your 601s!!! I live in PA as well, but the only catch is that I want to bring along my Revel Performa F-30s and Mccormack DNA-225 amp to compare and see what I'm missing. Is that OK with you?

Strength:

That they can at least compete in todays market place

Weakness:

surrounds are foam, highs are somewhat rolled off

The bose 601 series two and three are listenable little speakers.I think that bose gets it's bad rap because they havent kept up with the industry;while at the same time have enjoyed still much sales success based on a once deserved reputation for being state of the art gear.I have owned every bose model and the 601 is by far the best model.Bass is extended but a little fat and slow compared to a 1000.00 speaker of today.Bose has always used cone tweeters and the highs are rolled off compared to todays domes.Still....they are very listenable, can handle power and are suitable for home theatre. You can pick these up for under 200.00 is most cases. They are not the last word in performance. But there are alot of speakers out there sellimg for much more than the 601 did that are not musical nor do they have any bass below say 60htz.

You guys need to stop beating up on these speakers. There are many other speakers out there that really deserve it.I would buy the 601 series two or three before anything under say 500.00. LOOK CLOSELY AT AND TOUCH THE FOAM SURROUNDS AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE GOOD.The cost to re-foam can make them less of a bargain.Try to get them for around 200.00.That IS a bargain!

Weakness:

Not made anymore

My 601's have taken over 10 years of use and never missed a beat. There appear to be a few psychos in this site who wouldn't know their butt from a hole in the ground. This is an excellent product with great sound.

I'm submitting this review to counter the poor review given by "A distrubed citizen." Either distrubed continued to buy every Bose product even after he decided they were crap or he's rating something that he doesn't really own. I'd advise him to stop posting falsified, biased reviews and to break out that dictionary he's such a fan of and learn how to spell retarded, disturbed, revelation, and addict.

Thanks
Daniel

Strength:

Full range sound

Weakness:

sounds like someone is covering the speaker with a pillow

I've owned these speakers since 1986, when I was 15. I asked for them for X-mas to replace a pair of 1981 vintage Cerwin Vega's. I was disappointed when I did a comparison of the two speakers and the Vega's had more detail.

Actually I used them for ten years, when I didn't know better or care to find out about better audio equipment. That changed when I decided to buy a pair of Vandersteen 2Ce's. To give you an example, I had some Sennheiser 440 headphones that sounded better than the Bose, so I listened through the headphones a lot. The Vandersteens made the Sennheiser's sound like tin. That's as delicate as I can put it.

However, in the end this was Bose's best speaker. I did a side by side with the 901 and this won hands down. A sad commentary on this overhyped marketed company.

Strength:

Open detail warm highs. Clear, smooth deep bass. High power handling.

Weakness:

They are not made anymore by BOSE.

I'm the second owner of this unit bought through the news papers ads. I'm really searching for this speakers for he reasons that this was the best speakers that Bose have ever made. My father owns a Bose 501 series4, the bulky 501s not the new series. I've heard so many speakers from the british speakers (B&W, Celestion, Mission, Rogers, Tannoys etc.), Canadian speakers (PSB, Paradigm, Energy, NHT etc.) to the American speakers (JBL, AR, Infinity, Polk Audio etc.) so I know how they sounds but i've always comeback to the sound of Bose 601s. I think that it is a matter of taste and an objective opinion. I know that the 601s are not the best in the world of speakers, but I think it is one of the listenable speakers IMHO. Anyway I'm not an audiophile since they don't usually consider economic reasons(spending thousands of dollars on cables only). I'm just bug by the person who intentionally posted one star just to lower the rating of this model which I think is not right for an objective review. So to make this review balance, I will post this again.

The following are my a/v gears:

Yamaha RXV-795a - A/V Receiver
Denon DCD1530 - Dual 20-bit CD player
Hitachi F410 - MASTACS VCR
Bose 601 sIII - Main speakers
Yamaha NS10mm - Rear Speakers

note: still looking for a good DVD player and a center speaker.

IMHO this speaker far more exceeds my expectation espacially for the price. Anyway if you have any question or comment regarding my review pls. e-mail me at alvin_a_cruz@hotmail.com....

Strength:

High power handling. Efficient. Long lasting. Quality sound!

Weakness:

Paper drivers, cheap wire clips

You have to keep in mind that the pair of bose 601's I have were made in 1986, and one guy wrote that his were 20 years old! They still compete with new speakers in terms of sound quality! Does no one else find that amazing?? I would quikly give up my polks for the 601's if I had to choose! The Polks do sound better, but I know the Bose will be there for me for years to come. I mean, I know that Bose is not the all mighty god of audio, but they are DAMN GOOD!!! The new models have good price tags, and I feel that they compare to much more expensive models! I would buy bose again!!

Strength:

Looks, size and sound.

Weakness:

Not available anymore

My BOSE 601s are from the last series of BOSE 601 [series III, I think]. Each enclosure has 4 (3-inch) tweeters and 2 (8-inch) woofers.

My pair are several years old, but still no repairs needed.

Compared to the BOSE 901 VI, I think the BOSE 601 sounds better. I'm not sure if it's because I'm more used to the sound of the 601s, but I just find myself listening to my 601s more often.

What I like:

The enclosure design looks perfect. The grille colors go well with the overall design and the finish gets 2 thumbs up from the lady of the house.

I've heard someone say the 301s sound better, but I found the 301s to sound a bit compressed.

With any type of music, I found the 601 sound to be pleasant. I listen to classical music mostly and Horowitz sounded better than ever! Even with complex music like orchestra music, the 601s effortelssly reproduce the music. The sound does sound better with tone controls centered, which is how I'd like them to be set, anyway.

When I need it, bass is there to satisfy me. I've tried rock, funk, soul, R&B, dance, metal, BASS music (for those earth-shattering cars) and movies... the 601s sound great! If I really want to hurt myself, I'd use a bass equalizer and the 601s hardly sweat!

When I'm trying to relax, I set the dial to 1-watt output only and I still hear all the music... well balanced I should say.

Jazz music sound particularly great, especially music with piano and saxophone content. Vocals sound really warm for me, without sounding too nasal at all.

Channel sound separation is good considering the 601s are also direct/reflecting speakers.

What I don't like:

BOSE doesn't make them anymore. BOSE should re-introduce them IMO.

The rubber gromets should have been replaced with something less slipery. When playing movies or music with lots of bass I find the 601s to move a few milimeters (depending on the bass intensity).

The speaker terminals for the 601s should have been replaced with something more robust. Those spring-type speaker terminals were a bad idea, but at least the cable holes are big enough.

The internal wiring is rather thin for me.

I'd buy another pair of the BOSE 601s if only they were still available.

I read as much technical articles about loudspeakers and I can say I know enough about the subject. Like most speakers out there costing more, the BOSE 601s are not perfect, but they do sound very sweet as is.

Strength:

That such a pre-historic fossil could elicite rave reviews in todays modern world has to be a strength

I am writing this for 2 reasons. The first is to kill the 4.7 average that they USED TO HAVE. The other is to perhaps offer a smidge of enlightenment to some people who are quite clearly living hopelessly in the past. I have no doubt that these may have sounded good 15 years ago, but just like many other things, mankind has come a long way in 15 years, and so has the loudspeaker industry. To see people actually repairing these retarted version of the species brings an ear-to-ear smile to my face. Some may say that I'M not speaking objectively, but anyone who would actually claim that these produce "realistic sound" compared to todays similarly priced competitors, needs to have their hearing checked. So, as I bid the six of you fairwell, do as I did: WAKE UP!!!!

Wake up to the world that stands before you, take off the horse-blinders, go to a reputable high-end store and give it that college try. Listen to the music you know better than all others, preferably something that actually yeilds an accurate recording. And then if you still want to keep those amazing 601s for another 4,000 years (1000 replacement drivers later) then I fear you are beyond hope. BUT!!! As long as you buy nothing else from bose, thats fine too. Goodbye guys, you fellas make me laugh.....
