Strength:

The Bose Name?

Weakness:

No sound distinction. One big muddled mid-range.

I bought these speakers quickly as I had my wife with me, and she wasn't feeling well. Since I didn't want to subject her to the hour or two of comparing speakers that I would like to do, I bought these basically for the name. MISTAKE! I got these home and found these to have the worst sound of any speaker I have had in the past 20 years. I have had an old pair of Pioneers with blowh speakers that I duct-taped that have sounded better. I think good speakers should produce distinctly clear high and low ranges. These seem to produce an all-around muddled noise. I've never heard 'Dark Side Of The Moon' sound non-descript before, but these managed it. I found myself trying every combination as far as positioning and equalizing and volume. I can't get truly quality sound out of them no matter what I do. I will be returning these speakers this week. DO NOT BUY - You'll be far better off getting a good pair of $100.00 speakers.

Strength:

6-way speaker, 2 8" woofers

Weakness:

Not manufactured anymore...These are better sound than any current Bose product. There is a very small-range that these don't produce well.

I made the mistake of buying a new Bose center-channel; not a big fan of the new stuff. But I feel better since I bought a set of Series II 301 and 601 in a thrift store; I replaced the crossovers and re-coned as well as replaced the screens and veneer. all-in-all it cost me a bargain $250.00. These 601 are an amazing speaker for music listening and the home theater sounds good too. I think that there are new speakers that sound better, but these sound deep/high/crisp and natural not to mention classic.

Strength:

They sounded good for about 10 years.

Weakness:

Foam on the woofers cones dry rots.

I have a set of 601 Series II speakers. They worked fine until recently. This summer I blew all the foam rings off the woofers. The foam just seems to be crumbling. Nedless to say they sound horrible. These speakers were purchased new by me in the 1985 time frame.

Strength:

Excellent highs, rich sound throughout your room, very attractive look.

Weakness:

Drivers could have been made with better material but then again its what your ears think.

First of all i Cant believe some guy payed 3000 dollars for these no matter how good they are they shouldnt be bought for that price,,anyways,, these speakers will take you to heaven once you start listening, the highs give you goosebumps and leave you with a smile and making you proud of your purchase. The bass is more than should be expected out of such a small tower. Great product for a first time buyer of speakers.

Strength:

Ritch loud bass, excellent high/mid range, great volume, fills the room (good placement helps a lot)... ahh... beautiful! just beautiful! Oh, and... hehehe... $20... good luck finding a steal like that.

Weakness:

None that I can see yet... except you may play your music too loudly and too often.

Oh my god, these are the best sounding speakers I have ever heard in my life. Not to mention they're 6 way with 2 (for a total of 4) 8" woofers... oh man. Great for the room here, it doesn't matter that the TV is small anymore. I can't stress enough how excellent the sound quality is out of these... even with an old Yamaha sterio reciever. Oh, and did I mention that I paid only $20 for these babies? What a steal. Thank you Out of the Closet Thrift Store.

I just purchased a set of 1981 601 Series II, and I am extremely impressed with the sound, considering that it's being powered by an inexpensive Pioneer receiver. What kind of power should I be running? I'm not an audiophile but I've played in bands for over 20 years, so I know a good quality sound reproduction. What I've been reading a lot on this site is that the placement of these speakers is critical. Could someone help me out with that one? Do they have to be flat against the wall for the reflective speakers to sound best...or can they work just a well angled in a corner? Also I've noticed that at some bass frequencies the top grill buzzes...so I just pop it out on the top. Does anyone else have this problem?

Strength:

Good bass, very nice-looking speaker. I got the cherry cabinets.

Weakness:

None so far.

I got these for $317 plus my 18 year old Bose 501s when I took the 501s in to the local Bose store for refurbishing and found out that they don't make parts any more. I have been very pleased with these so far. I am not an audiophile, but I am a musician and music lover. I have been listening to a lot of CDs and hearing things that I never noticed before. The bass is very strong. I keep it turned down so I can hear the rest of the song. Mid-range and treble are also excellent. I don't know if these are any better than others in the same price range, but since I got them for around $300, I am a very happy camper.

Strength:

crisp, clear perfect sounds

Weakness:

none

The speakers are 601 series III bought around 1991 at a local shop along with the stereo system I got back then. It was purchased with a pioneer system ( VSX-D1S receiver, CT-W901R tapedeck, GR-777 equalizer, CLD-V820 Laser Disc player). At first I bought a pair of pioneer speakers to match the system, but the sound was muffled for the highs and the lows. Then I brought them back for a pair of Infinity speakers (same price range as the bose, not sure what model) but the bass was too much (it would litterally "punch" you in the ears), even playing with the settings on the equalizer to tone down the bass, my ears would still ring for hours after listening to them. So I brought them back and got the bose 601 and these were perfect. The sounds were crisp and clear, and perfectly suited me. I listen to a lot of classical music, the whole rooms seems to come alive when I listen to the sounds coming from these speakers.
