Strength:

Wonderfull soundstage, deep bass, naturel highs and mids,as a result coherent speaker

Weakness:

No real weaknesses except that it hasn't got real veneer but that's why it is sold to that price.

I spend 3 months to find speaker for my taste. I listened Infinity reference series, Tannoy r series, Dali grand, Definitive tech, Jamo concert. Finally I went to B&W dealer and the sound coming from this big boys just grabbed me. I had a chance to make A/B with 603s2. There was a huge difference between them. 603s2 also is a good speaker but 604s2's mids were clear they gave much more clear sound than 603s2. If listening to the musýc is more important for you, then don't hesitate, buy it. Dali grand is an also good speaker but not as much as B&W. Jamo has good soundstage but poor bass. B&W LCR6 is a perfect match for center speaker. As a result for this price range,it is a very good speaker. I am giving 5 stars to them easily.

Strength:

Naturality, clear treble, dynamics. Midrange is definetely awesome. They also produce very satisfying soundstage.

Weakness:

Bass could go little lower. Size. Can be difficult to set to sweet spot in small rooms.

First of all I should tell you what kind of music I listen: industrial, rock, jazz, house, drum'n'bass and small amounts of electronical music. I had problems deciding between evidence470 and 604s2, but B&W's won because they were IMHO more dynamic than Dali's (actually Nine Inch Nails's We're In This Together and Heresy still manages to scare my ass off with dynamics played with these speakers :)). 604s2's play well almost with every kind of acoustic music but could cause a little turndown with bass-weighted dance/trance music. Positioning these speakers can be difficult because they need lots of room behind them. Once positioned well, they sound very natural. With my Nad 216THX amp and Nad 114 preamp they give nice, smooth and warm sound.

Strength:

Reasonable low end for HT

Weakness:

Seperation noticibly week. Poor low end in audio.

I bought these for the new HT room in my sister's house. Paied up with Yamaha DSP-A1, Sony 550 DVD, B&W LCR 6 and B&W DS6 and Toshiba 50". All connected with Kimber 4PR and MTI interconnects. After a reasonable break in period I have discovered the same weaknesses and strenghts that I noted in the showroom. They are good for HT and good for audio. They are not great, and are far inferior to my Infinity Kappa's.

The only advantage they had was that they are still made (Kappa's out of prod) and only cost me $1,400 Canadian

Strength:

midrange, highs, and great detail, with a great amp they will play LOUD!

Weakness:

placement sensitive

once setup with the right parts and placement they give a very netural and balanced sound. you can read the other reviews for more of the strengths. But i do want to say that to get the most out of them they do require a good amp and wire. You will be disappointed with a inexpensive reciever and cheap wire, and certainly when not carefully placed!!! When they are setup right they have a great soundstage, maybe not as good as maggies but very good indeed. Under higher volumes they kept their composure better than the maggies and PSB's in simialar price range. With enough power they can be played very loud with no loss of quality. And one of its best strengths i believe are their ability to reproduce voices, makes them almost appear to singing in your own living room!! Use good wire, bi-wire them, and use a good amp ( >100watts and good build quality. Thats what they were designed for thats what they want, and if you do this and are turely disappointed... well thats your fault not the speakers.

GREAT SOUND QUALITY FROM,FROM A MID PRICED FULLRANGE SPEAKER

Weakness:

MOST PEOPLE THINK YOU CAN GET GREAT SOUND FROM THESE SPEAKERS WITH A CHEAP RECIEVER. DONT THINK SO!GET SOME REAL POWER AND ENJOY THE MUSIC.....

ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT HAVE A PAIR OF B&W'S WANT BETTER SOUND FROM THEM.GET RID OF THE METAL JUMPERS AND USE SOME SPEAKER CABLE.CUT THE SPEAKER CABLE ABOUT 3INCHS LONG AND STRIP THE END.THEN CONNECT THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM RED TO RED AND BLACK TO BLACK AND ENJOY........P.S.ALL SOLID METAL JUMPERS ARE ON GOOD.ALL SPEAKERS WILL SOUND BETTER WITHOUT THEM..

Ha tempos observo caixas e sempre tenho sido impressionado pela qualidade e tradição no mercado da B&W.
Sempre deve-se observar que para excutar uma tem-se que possui criterios anteriores e excelentes equipamentos que irao ser conectados entre si.
Parece um veludo limpando os ouvidos...
Muito boa mesmo... como tudo na vida, é claro que existe caixas melhores...

Strength:

Extremely open and informative, good bass, and nice looks

Weakness:

These speakers demand a good amp, but if you do, get ready to be impressed. The sound sound is clearer than anything I`ve ever heard at this price. I use the Marantz sr7000, and together they rock my house, excellent for both home-cinema, and music. Try them, love them, buy them

Strength:

This is a Follow-Up to my review (please scroll down).
This is about Bi-Wiring

Weakness:

Now... very few...

I decided to post this as a follow-up to a review which I
have previously posted concerning the B&W DM604S2 speakers.

In my original review, I make mention of the tweeter being
a tad "bright" and the midrange not being "forward"
enough for my taste. I can honestly say now that these are
no longer issues in my listening room. I'll explain.

As I live in Japan, the rooms in my house are of a
typically Japanese style. There is little furniture and
a lot of hard, reflective surfaces. I added first some large
foam bass traps behind the speakers and another one behind
the area where I usually sit and listen. This improved the
sound of the tweeter. The traps are a little less than a
meter wide and taller than the 604S2's. I also added a knit
area rug in front of the speakers to keep sound from
splashing off the hardwood floor. This improved bass
response as well as helping to control the tweeter.

Next, I placed absorbant rubber footers under each speaker.
I used four footers for each speaker. These were placed
under each of the four screw threads for the carpet spikes.
(my original idea was to cover a block of marble with felt
along the bottom and use the spikes on top of the marble
ala Sonus Faber's Grand Piano designs). This made a
significant improvement in the tightness of the bass.
Before the footers, I had the speakers resting on some
heavy-duty bubble wrap cut to the size of the bottom of the
speakers.

I then placed some sorbothane footers under the Sony ES amp
and the Marantz CD player. I honestly could hear no
difference in the quality of the sound from this at this
time. However, the speaker footers made a large difference
I felt.

After listening to the speakers this way for the greater
part of a year and being completely satisfied with them, I
read a few reviews on AudioReview.com about biwiring these
speakers. Well..... these people are absolutely correct.
THESE SPEAKERS MUST BE BI-WIRED! If you cannot biwire
yet, remove the jumpers connecting the terminals and cut
some small pieces of your speakerwire and use that to
connect the LF and HF portions... you will get better
sound.

I moved everything, cleaned everything, attached double
runs of Monster Cable from the "behemouth Sony" to the
DM604S2's, replaced all the footers and then placed the
heavy wood Chinese "Foo" dogs back on each speaker (I
bought these really heavy carved wood things for 100 en
each {about $1 each}... who needs $500 shakti stones?!?).
I turned on Anggun Cipta Sasmi's "Chrysalis" CD and was
floored!!! The bass was unbeleivable! It seemed separate
from the 604's. If I didn't know better I would have
thought that someone placed a subwoofer in my room without
me knowing it. The intro to the track was over and Anggun's
dark, clear voice began to wash over the room. I couldn't
believe that the midrange coming out of the speakers
belonged to the 604's.... it sounded more like my old
Alons! The midrange came forward!

"Wait!," I said to myself, "there is a hole in the sound
somewhere..." I sat down and listened closely. There did
seem to be something missing. It was definately in the
upper-bass/lower midrange. Then it hit me. The thing that
was missing was the midbass/lower midrange bloat and boom
that had plagued the speakers before! That haze and
smear that had been in that area was gone. I looked at
my roomate and best friend of 11 years and I said, "it
sounds separated!" And so it did. The sounds of the
traditional Indonesian instruments in the track were clean
and clear. Each note separate and definitive. There was
space and (for lack of a better term...) "air" around
each note. Anggun's own voice also eminated from a much
higher position than before. Her voice used to come from
between the speakers about 2" above the tweeters. Her
voice now comes from about 2 FEET above the speakers, and
sometimes shifts depending on where she was standing in
the studio!!! I could also hear the slight metallic tinge
to the Senheiser microphones being used in the studio.
I have used these mics extensively and they have their
own signature. (when I saw Anggun live she sang into Sure
SM58's.) So the percieved height of images also increased!
I also noticed that the soundstage extended further
beyond the speakers.

I sat down with a cup of coffee and listened to the
Cambridge Singers singing "Faure Requiem." For the first
time, I heard the organ in the begining of the peice
for what it is. I had always been aware of the organ
before, the 604S2's have great bass, but this time, I heard
the "qualities" of the organ. I heard the "purr" of the
pipes and the woodiness of the reed boxes. I was stunned!
I could point to where each of the Cambridge Singers stood,
I could hear the imaging THAT clearly. It was amazing. I
could also sense who was standing or sitting behind or in
front of whom. I could tell that the organ was behind the
singers and some distance away. Everything became etched
and clear. I also noticed that the 604s did not "hang" onto
certain notes as they used to. They are quicker and
cleaner than before.

Another factor in all of this may be the Amp itself. This
Sony ES amp is, in effect, putting out a full-range signal
into 4 8-ohm loads in parallel. This means that the amp
is now shelling out not 100 watts per channel as before
(I made an error in stating that it put out 90) but closer
to 200 wpc. The bass is connected to the speaker "b" output
and the high frequencies to the speaker "a" output. This
amp is a champion. Perhaps the greater power to the bass
is needed.

In conclusion, I can now play these speakers louder and
cleaner than I could before by a HUGE margin. There is no
longer any "smear" or "congestion" when I turn up the
volume. Bi-wiring these speakers does not cost too much.
If your amplifier can handle it, I highly recommend it.

Also, if you are thinking of buying these speakers,
audition them bi-wired. If your dealer refuses, walk away
and find one that will spend some time getting things
right.

I am going to go listen to some CD's now....
