Marcus.....you may have your point, but honestly, do you seriously think 604s2 provide any kind of imaging or transparency? On the other hand, I only compare it to CDM7nt and not something that's 3 times pricier...
I strongly recommend you to audition CDM7nt and come back and tell me what you think.
Neverthless, as I rethink of its performance and value ratio...I decide to give it a higher value rating this time.

Strength:

Gaetano M.)
Pre: AM AUDIO A5
Pre-pre fono: AM AUDIO MM20
Lettore Cd: Marantz 63Kis modificato meccanicamente ed elettricamente
Giradischi: Thorens 166 VI, testina Sumiko Blue Point Special

Strength:

Excellent Bass Extension (32 Hz in my room)

Weakness:

The midrange is not "forward" enough for my taste.

After giving up my Arcam/Alon/HSU system and moving to
Japan, I had to begin buying audiophile goods at bargain
prices. Audio Union helped me out by selling great used
equipment at cheap prices.

The B&W DM604 S2 is a great speaker for the money. It is
worth the price NEW. It is an even better bargain used.
The bass is full and quick. You can also tune the bass
by using the porous foam inserts for the bass ports. Bass
extends to 32 Hz in my living room. It is about 180 sq. ft.
(large for Japan) with an 8 ft. ceiling. In my room, the
bass and midrange function better when the speaker is
moved out into the room a bit. Give these guys a little
room to breathe and they sound great.

The midrange is clean and clear. It is a bit laid back for
my taste. The Alons were more forward in this respect. This is only a comment about the perceived "distance" of the midrange, the quality is excellent.
Also, use a good amp with the 604's. Don't skimp here. They are sensitive and can run on a few watts but they can give you a lot of slam if you have the power reserve. The aluminum tweeter will also sound bright with a cheap amp.

I use the 604s exclusively 2 channel and for music only.
The system I used is as follows::

Amplifier: Sony TAFA333ESx (90 wpc/8 ohms)(this is the older, 50 pound behemouth)
CD Player: Marantz CD67 SE mkII

Cabling is all Monster Cable

In short the 604s sound great with the pop, classical,
jazz, techno, and house music that flows through my
system for hours every day. I am extremely pleased with them.

They throw a deep, wide soundstage and go low enough
(in part thanks to the solid Sony ES amp) that I do not
need or want a subwoofer. The midrange is clean and clear..
and I am a midrange guy!!! The treble is extended and there
is plenty of "air" up there with the right amp and cd
player. They sound cleaner and clearer than the NHTs. They
are more powerful and extend higher than the Alons
(although they lack their liquid midrange) and they go much
deeper than the 805s for about the same price.

In all an excellent value. I do not regret this purchase
in the least.

Should you buy them? First, you need a little bit of room
for these guys. A room smaller than mine will not do if you
plan to use a solid state amp and listen to organ music.
In that case, the DM601s may suit you better.
Second, be sure your equipment will not sound too bright
for the aluminum tweeter. Otherwise, Yes! Enthusiastically
recommended!

As an aside... I recently went to the Hi-Fi Audio Show in
Tokyo to cover the event. I visited the B&W room. The setup
was all 801 Nautiluses with Marantz components. Here is
where room interaction comes into play. The 801s did not
sound good with that equipment in that room. I went home
to better sound in my own living room at 1/10th the price.
It's all about matching. Good luck!!!

Strength:

*very* pleasing sound, neutral, great mid & high. Makes me happy and makes me want to listen to music.

Weakness:

Deep bass, maybe, ok ok, none.

Well, I just had to write. This is the first pair of speakers I bought, took them home, and fell in love with them. All my previous purchases to date were, well, not very satisfying. My old Infinities (which were ok, but I was never satisfied) gave out just 3 days ago (the woofer foam surrounds just cracked and disintegrated on me), so I figure I will get a new pair. I wanted to spend ~$1000. I bought a pair of Polk 800i from Circuit City and listened to them. They were ok with fairly deep strong bass, but the mid were, in my opinion, very muddy. Well, then I picked up the 602s2 and WOW. For the money, I think (to me anyway), these speakers sounds very sweet with excellent detail. The construction seems top notch as well. I would recommend these speakers to anyone anyday.

Strength:

wonderfull soundstage, very deep bass

Weakness:

It hasn't got real veneer

There is no need to talk much. It has got really good filters and drivers. Bass drivers give very special deep bass. Voices are clean. It has got all the musical values but they don't seem like that because of their veneers. But that is why people pay less money for this good piece.

Strength:

Excellent range in music, good soundstage for movies

Weakness:

none yet

Just got these speakers. Running them with an old Kenwood 100W/ch amp, dolby surround only, they sound great. I'm waiting for my new amp to come in, but even without a center channel speaker DVDs sound great with excellent dispersion of front sounds between the speakers. Music sound crisp although I'm still breaking them in. Thankfully my wife likes floorstanding speakers better than bookshelves!

Strength:

Controll, soundstage, awesome bass, clearity, level of distortion, clean, build quality and looks.

Weakness:

You must be craisy!!!

This is a cool speaker, both fore music and fore surround-sound. (No other speaker has THAT midrange).

And it isn't strident at the top, not at all, but highly detailed. And it fits great together with both DD and DTS.

B&W DM604S2 gives a very solid bass foundation in the music. It uses two bass units instead of one, and that halves the strain on the individual bass unit. And that gives increased strength in the bass section, and it also reduces distortion. In combination with big cabinet DM604S2 then reaches deep down in frequency. If you aren't going to bay a sub, bay the 604 it gives plenty of bass.

The serious construction with the use of high quality components, in the simple crossover, the tweeter with Nautilus technology, the new Kevlar midrange and the new papir/kevlar bass units makes the DM604S2 a very competent speaker.

I surround the DM604S2 is a magnificent speaker. It can play loud without any sign of distortion, but remember these babies need good equipment and cables if you want to take full advantage of their qualities. I use Maranzt SR7000 and Marantz DVD-890 connected with Audioquest cables.

Give them a listen.

Strength:

Rich, deep, soundstage. Excellent bass response. Build Quality.

Weakness:

For such a large speaker, the binding posts could be set slightly farther appart to allow for spades (difficult to do this.)

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with some of the reviews for this speaker. I am the first to admit it's not perfect, but not to the extent people are trashing them. I wonder about some of the setups people heard the speakers in. It's a $1600 (msrp) speaker, not a $3k speaker!

Okay, let's really look at these speakers - they have excellent bass response, great build quality, they are tunable to room setup, rich deep soundstage, and overall a decent value for the money. Are there speakers better, yes!
But for the money, not too many.

You definitely need to have the appropriate setup to utilitize the full sound quality of these speakers. You can pretty much throw anything at them and they will never scream mercy. I'm going to be getting a Rotel RB-1090 to use with these, but I admit it's a lot of power to use with an efficient speaker such as the DM600 series 2's.

The series 2 steals a bit of it's big brothers features and gets the tweeter from the nautilus series. They are a big improvement in sound quality over the series 1's. If you auditioned the previous generation and didn't like them, give them a second chance and check out the series 2's. (They don't make Stereophile recommended components for looks alone!)

I definitely advise you to listen to them. I listened to the DM602 S2 (they sound great, with an active subwoofer they would be almost perfect), DM603 S2 (I wasn't too thrilled with these for the money, I don't recommend them), and the DM604 S2 (for a full range speaker they are excellent.)

I think the B&W sound is one that you either like or dislike. I happen to be converted. I fell in love the first time I heard the 804 Matrix.

I'm very happy with my purchase, yes, I own a pair. I haven't looked back since I took out my credit card.

Great buy in my opinion. I would give them a 4.5 star rating if they had it as I know there are better speakers out there, but for the money they are definitely a 5, so 5 it is!

Strength:

quality from tip to toe, every inch has been thought through, exccelent crossovers, oh and they also sound spectacular but you knew that already : )

Weakness:

the 601's have plastic connection brackets... dont know why.. cos the rest have metal

there are no better words to describe these two guys but perfect. B&W have, as usual, delivered a spectacular speaker that makes you enjoy music not just listen to it.

the bass drivers are bolted to the cabinet strong enough to withstand a nuclear holocast just to begin with, moving up to the midrange which is nothing to be laughed at, kevlar once again proving to be a wise choice in a speaker, and then up to the tweeter, which has such power and precision that it can make moby feel like its actualy scratching your ear drums

i have these plugged up to a yamaha rxv800 and have worked without a concern

two words.. BUY THEM
