I just thought I would put in two cents on this... Only reason i ended up coming to the forums is to find a replacement tweeter for one of my 583lr's. If you can manage to find a pair like i did on craigslist. Buy them! I paid a guy $50 who must have paid way more judging from what i've read and I think they are comparable to sonys. I just need to go to fry's and find a couple tweets to replace both sides now. Great speakers for the price. IDK about 400watts but they are plenty loud.

Really people? "I bought these speakers in a Safeway parking lot".Wow, that's not where you demo a pair of speakers!! Ever hear the expression, "if it sounds too good to be true....... Please, please go see a qualified professional at a brick and mortar that has a real website and real sales people that want to evaluate your equipment and sell the correct speaker.

Ironically, it's only through attempting to sell them (through Craigslist) that I discovered they weren't produced by a legitimate company. As far as I'm concerned, the horror stories of getting ripped off by street vendors aren't my problem, and don't affect my valuation of the speakers themselves. I've owned these "white van" speakers for several years. Yes, I bought them out of the back of a truck--I think I paid $200 for the pair--but they're so reliable and produce such good sound (at low and high volume) that I felt the need to chime in.

If you're approached by someone selling these speakers out of the back of a van (or a truck--a Jimmy, specifically, as it was in my case), check the model number. If it's a pair of 830LRs, talk him/her down as far as they'll go, hook them up to your receiver, pour a glass of Cognac (or whatever you prefer), and enjoy them until you start looking for $1000+ range towers. Because frankly, the 830LRs are freaking sweet.

i bought a set of audiofile 830LR'S AND i NEVER HAve hooked them up for I was using a home theater surround system at the time and just never have hooked them up. these speakers are the wood cherry and are in perfect condition. The cabinets haven't got one scratch. These speakers are new just that I bought them and never used them. I'm looking for offers if anyone is interested. 541-923-7678

This review is for the Audiofile 830LR floor standing tower speakers. I paid $100 for the pair. Mine were not new, but were unused. One had been slightly damaged in shipping (easily repaired), so the original owner sold them rather than having the repair done. Before buying, I had done some research, and like so many others found that these so-called "Audiofile" speakers had been marketed in the U.S. via a parking-lot sell-from-vehicle scheme (scam). Aside from the sales scam, however, listener reviews at the time were actually very positive. When I looked at the speakers and took a good look inside, at the driver and tweeter structures, at the crossover network and overall construction, I was very impressed and bought them. After repairing the one cabinet (looks perfect now), I connected them to a vintage 185w high-end receiver. I've been impressed ever since! Like others, I've found the bass response a bit weak, but with some added punch using active equalization found that these things are capable of some awesome bass! They just need a little added low end punch. As for the guy who said that a Fostex driver alone, without a mid driver or tweeter, would beat these speakers, that guy is no pro and he's never even listened to these things! No way! The tweeters in these things are better than the tweeters in my $800 Paradigm's. These speakers are obviously built to be economilcal, but where it counts, they are built with quality and precision. Very impressive for the price I paid. They are by far the best speakers I've owned in the $100/pair range. I'm not sure if they'll handle the claimed 400 watts, but they've endured hours and hours at high volume at 185 watts, ..for 8 years now.. with no signs of overheating or distress of any kind. For what it's worth, I'm very impressed! Like any speaker, placement and equalization is important, but once you've found the setup that works, these things please my ears. My only fear is that a driver, tweeter or crossover will blow and I won't be able to find a replacement. For $100, these things are great!!! My next planned speaker purchase is priced at $1400. I hope they'll match the "value" of these infamous Audiofile 830LR's.

Strength:

Weight, sound, good deal for the price paid.

Weakness:

Nothing yet

I have just recently purchased a pair of these infamous Audiofile 583 LR speakers. Unlike others on this site, I did not buy these from the back of a truck, van, or SUV; I got mine at a yard sale in my neighborhood for $25.00. I have been satisfied with them so far. When I saw them sitting in the front yard of this person selling them, they looked impressive and felt impressive due to their weight and size. Like others here, I immediately looked for Audiofile on the Internet and found nothing but negatives.

I have these speakers hooked up to an older Harman/Kardon receiver with an Audiosource power amp. Not having used a set of tower speakers in quite some time, I have been please with these for the price I paid.

ALL THE HATERS HATING ON THESE SPEAKERS

I bought the two AUDIOFILE 830LR twin tower speakers from Tweeter Home Theater store. The store was going out of business and had a ( radio & newspaper) close-out first come, first buy deal. My wife and I were in the market for sterio speakers to go w/ our Sony reciever and our newly aquired 55" HDTV. The price seemed like one hell of a deal and the sound display that we listened to was as well as any I had seen at larger electronic stores(i.e. Best Buy, Circuit City, ect.) Not to mention Tweeter was what many percieved as a up and comming version of Best Buy. So after the hefty sales pitch and some listening ,we purchased the speakers. This was around 2000 - 2001. I have had numerous friends and sound techs who installed the cable work in my home explain how nice the sound is. Now, I don't know anything about a White Van , I cannot find this company on the WEB, nor can I doubt that these were made ligitamately. What I can say is that these speakers have out performed my Sony& BOSE speakers and have held up now for about 8 years. I'm no sound guy, (maybe somewhat tone deaf) BUT < there is no one who will tell me I didn't buy a GREAT PAIR of speakers. I've blown just about any type , manuf., size speaker I can name, but not these. They handle Dolby Digital II Surround perfectly clear with good transitions. Gamming sound and in (COD4 & Socom 1+) where you need some quality speakers to handle the nuiances of the game; these fit the BILL. Maybe it's the fact I have hardwood floors or I am lucky...? I don't care, for the money I had to spend and the time that they have lasted (longer than most electronics these days with a 3-5 max life) I think I still GOT A DEAL.
