Strength:

Crisp, Clean, True sound enriched with detail

Weakness:

no powerful bass for the rap lover, but come on, their bookshelf speakers and only $300!

Although not fit for a rap lover who might prefer a booming bass, these speakers do provide a beautiful sound, well balanced and plentiful for any sort of music. I compared these speakers to the B&W DM602 S2, although similar products the AE's had a superior crispness while the B&W's lacked the same detail the AE's produced.

To maximize your speakers I would recommend using a Rotel cd player and a good amp. The rotel's really make these sound amazing and a good amp will certainly help with the upper db's.

If you're looking for a set of speakers that provides enough detail for an easy listen and for a low price, buy the AE one's. Simply amazing quality for money!

Strength:

Midrange, detail, sound staging

Weakness:

not bi-wirable, but at this price???

I'm using these 1's with my DENON AVR1801 AV amp, and a combo of Grundig dvd player and Sherwood cd players, and Monster midrange interlink and speaker cabling.

These little things really sound great, open smooth mids, not-too-bright tops with plenty off detail, and a surprisingly powerful deepish controled bass for there 5-inch drivers. I do use them with a 15 inch sub (amazing combo) but often happily enjoy them on their own, as they really perform well on all kinds of music.

I use them in HT mode with a matching Eagis Centre speaker, and my older Jamo Classic 4's as rear (The stupid bright sounding things were forced off the front stands quickly when my AE's arrived). With the Denon's small/large speaker crossover settings set to small, these AE's rock at unbelievable levels in HT mode. Stereo imaging is clear, and all little finer sound effects are thrown out with great realism. I also really enjoy acoustic guitars both in stereo recordings, and in DTS off dvd, these AE's really place the instrument in the room.

I'm now considering putting the Jamos in the dog's kennel and getting either the aegis 1's or maybe even the 3's.

Strength:

Tight natural sound

Weakness:

Aging design

The natural sound and quickness of the Aegis One is makes it one of the best budget speakers available. Although some may say it lacks bass together with the Aegis Sub (A very musical sub) the set makes for a wonderful AV experience. On most kinds of music it killed the 601's but especially on classical music.

Strength:

decent bass for the size, well balanced sound

Weakness:

narrow soundstage, the vinyl finish looks cheap

These are so-called entry level speakers and I bought them for a temporary use. However I just like them and have no plan to replace them with the ones under USD 1,000.

These are well balanced speakers and pretty much all-round. Enough details on highs but not fatiguing, quite a lot of lows if you listen too them in a small room with a decent power amplifiers. Even midrange is satisfiable for the price.

Symphonies are bit too much for them but that's what bookshelves are not good at.

If you just got'em, be patient. It takes several months to break in for good midrange reproductions.

These guys know it if you spend money for the amplifiers. The sound Aegis one's reproduce deserves a lot more than they cost.

Strength:

Style, solid build, mid-range, imaging, and good upper bass. Highs were good not the best I've heard.

Weakness:

Takes a while to burn in but well worth the wait. Not huge on bass but what do you expect at this price range and that's what a good subwoofer is all about.

Music wise. The high point is definetly the mids. At this price range you'll be hard press to touch the mids these babies produce. The highs were above average. The upper side of lows were really good. I've listen to quite a few speakers at this price range and I feel these are at the top of there class at this price range. I also feel these would out perform some speakers three times the price. If your looking for a great deal because were all not rich like some people. I would give these bookshelve speakers a serious ear. Three hundred dollars is about as low as your going to be able to go to get any kind of quality. When I finally burned these guys in. The sound was very impressive.

Movie wise. The high point was definetly the imaging. One word----Unbelievable!!! Detail was very good too. Stuck in Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition. It sound like Arnold was riding his Harley right in my living room.

My system includes the folowing:
Denon 3801 A/V Receiver
Denon 3700 DVD Player
Acoustic Energy Aegis One (front and surround speakers)
HSU VTF-2 Powered Subwoofer

I'm very happy with these speakers. I would give these speakers a 6 star for value if they went that high. You would have to be a moron not give these speakers a five star for value rating. If you expecting better performance try spending a lot more money. Overall rating I'll give them a 5 star because of price.

Bass response, clarity, accuracy

Weakness:

None at this price!!

I have no idea how AE makes these speakers for $300 retail. I saw an ad for these speakers in the AR.com market section and since the guy was semi-local, I decided to go down and check them out. I was not disappointed - these speakers picked up details I never heard through my Quintets (no suprise there - they're meant to be my surrounds) and the JBL S38's I tested. The S38's are a great speaker IMO, but these Aegis One's were much sharper. The bass response was even better, and these woofers are smaller by 3"! I am personally a fan of aluminum cone drivers - I play bass and only use Hartke cabs, which also utilize aluminum cones. I dont have a sub yet so these are sufficing for music and HT until I pull together more funds for a KSW-12. Sometimes I question whether I even need the sub. I'm in a small apt and they are holding up just fine - they shake things and they're only getting 75wpc fed into them from my HK AVR-75! I am extremely happy with these and would buy another set in a heartbeat for double the price I paid.

Went shopping with a friend who was looking for some new speakers (I'm a Linn Index owner). Heard these in Chicago at ProMusica and was stunned by what $300 can buy now. Seems like a good speaker for $500 - $700. But for $300? Its a No-brainer best buy.
If your thinking PSB 300i, Paradigm Mini-Monitor, B&W 302, Tannoy M2, or NHT Superone(or Mission, JPW, etc..), you must hear these before making a decision. The best at this price range I've heard.

Easy to drive, terrific build quality, very smooth midrange, great resolution, and honest. Great match for NAD or Arcam budget gear (needs clean but smooth electronics), which means that for less than $1000, anyone can have a simple, well built, musically satisfying hi-fi system. (MUCH, MUCH better than some 100 watt Pioneer / Sony dolby digital / 100 disc / Bose /JBL /Infinity sytem purchased at Costco or Circuit City). Add this to the list of amazing best buy speakers (Mag MMG, B&W 601 S2, Linn Kan). Curious to hear what the Aegis 2 and 3 will sound like.

Note: These are made in China to control costs. Let your political sense in on buying decision.

5 stars based on value alone.

I wasn't in the market for speakers but went with Jack(see review below) to check these out. I recommended that Jack buy them after listening to one song. He did and is very happy with them . we took them to his house and I had the chance to listen to them with a subwoofer. To make a long story short, I had to have a pair. These speakers are crystal clear and have superb imaging. Listen to these before you buy anything near the price ($300).
