Strength:

Clear, imaging

Weakness:

None, for this price

Good value for money. I did audition other brands at $300 price range. It beats all. I guess I will stick to it for a while till I get Aegis two for the front and move it to the rear.

Strength:

Extremely engaging and accurate. I have not found anything in my collection that they cannot do justice to.

Weakness:

Some may find the highs a bit too smooth, if that is possible. No problem for me. Some may still wish to add a sub, although the bass is very generous IMO.

After a thorough search through this web site and exhaustive auditioning, I selected the Aegis One's. I found them to be the most versatile speakers of those I tested. Paradigm Mini-Monitors were too harsh in the highs for me, with the Monitor 3's needing a great deal of power.
I am running them with a Yahama HTR-5150 receiver (70 watts) and they are a great match. I located a dealer in the "Marketplace" section of AudioREVIEW who sold them to me for $225, which is an absolute steal. I am not well-versed in audio jargon, but, I have to agree with others who raved about the midrange response these speakers possess. I find them absolutely captivating. While I do not have the ability to judge where they rate compared to pricey and/or esoteric speakers, I know that nothing from
$600 down even came close. I truly find them to be remarkable. I am not currently doing home theater, strictly
music, so you may want to take that into account. You will have to look far and wide to find anything that compares. Throw out the value and price comparisons, you will pay pretty righteous money in order to find something that can outperform them. I do not know why AE does not charge more for them, because they could easily command a higher price and still sell a bunch. I am just glad they do not. If you are looking for stupendous performance at the right price, do yourself a favor and include these in your list. Easily 5 stars as compared to class and 5 stars for a good long while up through to the higher price ranges.

Strength:

Excellent focus and imaging.

Weakness:

If they were $1,000, I might find something!

Having owned Vandersteen 1B's for 8 years, it was tough to sell these and get something that was "catproof". I was attracted to the Aegis by the excellent reviews here and the fact that I have an Acoustic Energy dealer in my town (Sound Unlimited).
I arranged an audition with them. To be honest, I did not expect much when I first saw them. After all, what could you expect from a speaker that cost $300/pair with a 5 inch woofer. I was speechless at how well they sounded, forget the price! They looked good too!
Imaging is excellent. Bass is suprising represented, without being overdone. But the midrange is where these really kick ass. Vocal presence is unbelievable. Setup dictates that they be from the wall a bit (at least 12") as they port from the rear. Sturdy stands about 24" high are also needed. I am using them with a AVA Super-PAS 3 Tube preamp, a B&K ST-140 power amp and Kimber 4PR speaker wire. Give them a chance to break in and you will keep them!!

Strength:

detail, clarity, smoothness, imaging, dynamics,etc.

Weakness:

low bass of course

Its not easy to pull yourself away from these, especially with a decent subwooofer. The mids will reveal details you hadn`t heard in familiar recordings. The highs are literaly silky smooth and as detailed as the mids. Bass is punchy and clean and impressive for the small 5" mid/woofer . You still can benefit from a sub, as with any mini-monitor. More transparent and better highs than my jbl hls610, which are also decent speakers.

I spent 2 mounths looking at all those speakers. The infinitys cost twice as much, the polks don't have the base, the energys were real close.I heard them all but i didn't hear these.i had to go throw mail order to get them. And after i got them and listined to them i really like them the best and glad i bought them. They sound great both for movies and music,i have a seperate sub so that helps with the bass. But on dvd movies they blow you away.My two months of looking paid off.

This is an update to my previous review.
Please note that the purpose of buying these speakers would be to replace my Index+. To make a long story very short, I was able to fix the problem with the Index+ and did not buy the Aegis One. Additionally, I should say that any speaker I would buy would need to placed very close to a wall. That is how the speakers were placed when I listened to them. It was my hope that I could dampen the rear port of the Aegis and eliminate the distortion while retaining the rich, full-bodied sound that they are capable of producing. I never had the opportunity to try this, but hoped to accomplish this by filling the port with drinking straws, cut to fit.

Finally, I listened to these speakers again this week-end. I also re-listened to the B&W 601-S2. When properly placed, the B&W is the unquestionable superior speaker. Remembering that there is about a 45-50% price difference, the Aegis One is still worth considering.

Strength:

Value, Value, Value!

Weakness:

As of yet...none

I was in the market for a new set of small speakers to couple with my Klipsch 100w sub as a main set of speakers. I was limited to a 500.00 budget...including new stands. The Aegis Ones blew away the competition in comparison(Tannoy, Def. Tech, Paradigm, Kef, Klipsch, Mission). I was unfamiliar with AE before I went shopping and my salesperson told me to listen to them last. I couldnt have been more suprised...excellent imaging, very balanced, efficient and musical. The build quality is excellent and the drivers are top notch. I have them placed on a set of Plateau 28" metal stands with top and bottom spikes. Im running all Sony ES components connected with Monster Cable. The AE's are a great value...look forward to when they break in!

Strength:

Nice and smooth treble, warm, very clean sound and the mid-range is absolutely fabulous. Well defined bass too.

Weakness:

none so far

The AE Aegis one is absolutely a nice speaker for the price. I was using Paradigm Mini Monitor before buying the AE. Mini Monitor sounds nice, very dynamic but the treble is piercing and unbearable for me. So i decided to look for another speaker. Bought the AE online with 30 days money back and compared it with Paradigm side by side. At first listen, the AE sounds dull and uninvolving. But after about 24 hours of break in, the speaker started to sound nice.
The AE has a sweet and smooth treble and the mid-range is absolutely fabulous. The bass maybe a little weak compared with Pardigm, but is more well defined. The bass on Paradigm is big, but it's not well defined compare to AE's bass. Actually i like the AE bass more. Paradigm's bass sounds boomy.
Imaging and soundstaging is nice too. Well focus and has a huge and wide soundstage. To me, AE are more neutral and natural sounding. Paradigm are more dynamic and can get listener to involve in the music. For those who like sweet treble and mid-range should audition this speaker. For those who prefer dynamic, Paradigm Mini Monitor may be the choice.
Me...i prefer AE more.
