Strength:

looks and "feels" professional---both packaging and speakers themselves

Weakness:

junk; replica of quality loud speaker; require to much power to drive a botoom-line acceptable sound

Just got scammed on four 3-way Acoustic 9901 speakers. Basically the same con occurred as described by others before. I was hit on in a Walmart parking lot in central Texas 70 miles north of Austin. I, unbelievably, was in route to look at new loudspeakers to replace my old but worn out ESS PS-8A speakers. I was in the frame of mind, therefore, 'wanting to believe' these guys anyway but they are good---good enough to make you put your logic and good sense away!!!. Two white guys in a white van, a Tahoe I believe, with Colorado license plate number 047-AAG (real nice appearing vehicle) waived me down and I thought that they were lost (Colorado plates) and needed direction. . They had official appearing brochures and receipt for their product. I had no sense that the speakers were stolen or that they were not legitimate---the packaging on the speakers was very authentic in appearance, the boxes were unopened. They came with a warranty card (which is, as it turns out, also fake). Best of all, ahemm..., they were for professional use and made in the good ol' USA. Frankly, I confused them (in my mind) with Acoustic Research (AR) speakers! They were two Gen-X-age white guys, one who's name was ostensibly (and according to the invoice receipt they had) Chris Pitcher (and as it turns out he truly is a 'pitcher', of lies, bull and deceipt). The other guy was 'named' Ed Boginsici. He was of heavier build, with a little goatee and large color tatoo on his right arm. He does not try to hide it either---he played the 'rational' one while the other, Chris, the wired, anxious one (he reeks of smoke as well). I paid $600 in the form of a personal check to Chris Pitcher, who somehow managed to cash it at a local bank. I imagine he will be recorded on the bank lobby video cam. Unlike the other reviewers I have gone to the police.

In conclusion, do not buy these speakers---they are low-quality, great looking frauds. Please report these characters as soon as you see them.

Strength:

Sounds like a great deal!

Weakness:

I've read the reviews and i'm afraid to try them out....

learn by burn i guess... i've heard all about scams and used to just laugh at the people who get hit, but now i'm the idiot .... just like everyone else said, it sounds like a great deal, and i've heard of this kind of thing happening for real.... i had some extra money in the bank, and shelled it out, and now i'm stuck with what are apparently pieces of junk. the worst part is that thinking about it in retrospect, their story was flawed, but i didn't catch it. oh yea, and i fell for their sob story about how little money they make... well, i'm an idiot, and i just got burnt. go ahead and take your case to the cops, but when it comes down to it, we can't prosecute someone just because we're stupid...

The Enigmatic

I've been a victim since March 2000. Though, that doesn't bother me as much as the *number* of people who have been ripped off.

Many people still don't have computers/internet access, but judgeing from the number of people who actually post to audioreview.com, many more people must have lost money to these van-driving goons.

Like I wrote earlier - these speakers are fine for me. I'm no audiophile. They sound great (though i've never heard ``expensive'' speakers). The frequency response of these speakers are good. 10Hz is visible. 30Hz is strong. The highs go up to about 20KHz (that's where my hearing kicked out).

Please tell everyone that you know not to get ripped off.

Hello all!
Reading these posts I feel bad for all of you. I never got taken in by these pricks but to let you know they are up here in Canada too.
Its a company called Paragon. they are pretty smart guys. They have specs for their speakers in old sound and vision magazines(they old canadian mag...not the new S&V).List prices go to $3000! Of course this is canadian dollars so to you americans it isn't much. Anyways....
One day I got a phone call from a friend of mine and she said her brother had picked up some $2000.00 speakers for $400.00. that he bought from some guys out of a van. Even though I was just beginning in my home theatre hobby I still knew decent speakers... I came over to her place as fast as I could.
When I first saw them I knew it was a scam. Carpeted. These $2000 speakers were carpeted! The bindings on the back were not of quality...they sounded even worse than they looked. I kept my mouth shut because
1)she would get upset at me for the suggestion that her "smart" brother was takin for a ride and
2)it was too late to do anything anyway.

I said they were decent and that was it. That was 3 years ago. Since then I have seen the speakers at pawn shops( even though not lately...I think even they have caught on). I can just hear the kid now trying to sell them..."but there $2000.00 dollar speakers..."
"Look kid....we'll give you $50 bucks for them...."

These guys are slick. There all over the continent and they are not going away. It costs them $50.00 to make them(probably less with mexican labor) and they make a killing.
oh well just my 2 cents

Strength:

Very clear

Weakness:

Low bass

I've been reading the posts here and I too have the same story of two guys (white and indian) selling speakers out the back of their truck. Same story too. I paid $500 bucks for 4 of them and to tell you the truth, yeah the sub doesn't kick that loud but the sound clairity IS really good. Very crisp and clear at loud volumes. So they aren't a bad pair of speakers.
