piece of crap

I got ripped off by 1 guy in a truck...it was Christmas and I got the same story about how he got to many speakers for some job he was working. The damn thing is useless. I get better sound from my computer's POS speaker than this thing.

Strength:

N/A (I did not buy the speakers.)

Weakness:

Highly questionable marketing techniques.

I too was approached a few weeks ago. I was driving with the windows down and a white (GMC Safari, I think) minivan pulled up beside me. The men inside offered the speakers for $300 per pair. They stated they needed money for bus tickets because they were facing a "personal emergency." Needless to say, I declined their generous offer. I did not know about this scam at the time, so I failed to get any tag info. This may or may not be related to the encounters mentioned below, but my experience seems similar. Be careful if you are approached, as it is possible someone could use such a scam to lure you into a carjacking, rape, robbery, etc. Also, do not ever buy speakers without first hearing them (unless you buy Legacy), no matter how good a deal they seem.

odd high pressure sales tactics

I actually didnt buy these speakers, but I do recognize the story. Last fall I was at the mall. I had just come out of the store. A red van pulled up quickly (Dodge or GMC), three guys get out, one comes over to me as I am getting into my car. I had gotten in, by then locked the door and was ready to leave, he motioned for me to roll my window down. I did, the guy produces a yellow "sales slip" and says, "Dude, check this out, we just got back from picking these speakers up, we were supposed to set up for a concert at a bar downtown. We ordered 8 speakers but they gave us 8 pairs instead!". He tried to hurry me through and sell me these things. I never really looked at the speaker either so I cant say what its quality is. I really didnt have any money so I offered him $25 each. He refused and I said I really didnt need em anyway. The thing they are aiming for is a high pressure sale. I took the $50 I had at the time, went to the local junk store and got two oddball speakers for $25 a piece instead which work fine in my basement. The worst part of the deal is you dont get to hear the speaker before buying it. I have bought 6 speakers without first hearing them, the two $25 ones I mentioned above,(Acoustics 200P, which does not share a relation with these things, and a Lyric 5), my pair of AR 226PS speakers, an AR subwoofer and a Kenwood Subwoofer. I will admit I was satisfied for the most part with the speakers I didnt hear before buying, but it is a risky thing to do, and most were take or leave clearance items. Even so, I still had the option of returning any of those, with the out of a van sales you would be hard pressed to track the seller down.

Everything

It seems like they've moved into the midwest. Got ripped off big time today from two guys in a white Astro van with Florida plate T98ZRT. Tall, young guy with buzzed hair does all the talking; short guy with goatee doesn't talk that much, seems nervous. Filed a report with the police but probably won't do much good -- I'm sure they're long gone. They use the same old story -- got eight extra speakers and need to sell them or they will lose their job -- . It is true -- if it sounds too good, it probably is.

Watch out, people are trying to sell 'em on E-bay now. Lucky for me, I have an inquiring mind! Having never heard these speakers, and being that the value rating section of this review is a required field, I'll be gracious and give 'em 3 stars. How the hell would I know?

The box looks great and the mids and highs are decent

Weakness:

The price I paid and the fact that the 12" subs sound terrible

Boy was I upset when I found out that the Acoustic model 9901 speakers I had just bought were a scam. These speakers are worth at most $75 each. Unfortuanately, this expensive lesson costs me two weeks worth of paychecks. I boght these speakers thinking they were worth $895 each. The only reason I thought the speakers were worth more was because of the professional looking catalog the two men in the white van showed me. I did try the the speakers out not expecting much out of them. Yes, they are loud, but their is little two no bass coming from the subwoofers. The subwoofers are the most expensive things in the whole sound system usually, but in this case the subs are probably the least expensive part of the sound system. I am spending a lot of my time trying to find out the phone # of the manufacturers of these crappy speakers. You know those people that claim their address is W.W.A. P.O. Box 450250, Sunrise, Florida 33345. So far I have contacted the Better Business Bureau and they told me to try Consumer services at 1-800-435-7352. If anyone out there knows the phone # listed above please post it on this message board.

the crappy 12" subs

After I read my previous post I realized I made some mistakes in my last post to start with I meant to say the most inexpensive part of the whole sound system are the subs. I meant to say that if anyone knows the phone number of the adrees above (W.W.A. P.O. Box 450250, Sunrise, Florida 33345) these mistakes may be easy to fiqure out for any one reading my first most, but I need to make sure everyone understands my message perfectly. Because I am serious I will do what ever it takes to find out more about this scam and any information I find out I will post on this message board.

Weakness:

is a scam and a pair got stolen

I fell for this scam in 1993 when I was 17 I bought 2 pair one looked like standard house speakers the other set was more like a carpeted box and had grey metal grills like the car boxes people have. The "box" speakers were stolen out of a friends car, he was using them for his car stereo.(his system was all rigged up and if I remember correctly the bass was pretty good). The house speakers I still have and use today they have worked well for me. They are not the best speakers money can buy, but I figure at the $100 each I paid they turned out ok. I am actually looking for new speakers now just because my system and budget have increased in size. I would value them at $50-$75 each if they work and are in good condition, but if you can't test them do not buy them. and listen to each individual speaker(tweeter, mid and sub) because on one of them the tweeter was not working and I replaced it with a $15 tweeter and it sounds ok. I learned my lesson and have been approached by scammers since then and have avoided getting suckered. So it is a good lesson I learned and the speakers were not so bad. So all you guys who got scammed don't feel so bad, just fire up the speakers and treat them like crap until you buy new ones.
