Don't get me wrong, I like these speakers but the have a strong resonance at about 60 or 70 Hz, that I can't get rid of even when they are placed well out into the room. Perhaps this is why some think it has more bass than it does. The boominess combined with the lack of extension made it tough for me to mate it with my sub (M&K V75II). The sub doesn't sound clear enough up into the midbass. Using the speaker inputs clears up the 70 Hz hump but hurts the rest of the sound. Maybe the speaker needs to be damped more in this region. I solved this problem by buying Platinum Studios and am much happier with them, in addition, the dymamics are better and the highs are smoother. The music is more realistic.

Compnents are:
NAD 512
NAD 712
Acurus A100

The 601's strength are their clarity and vocals and I now have them happily in the den for video, with which they are perfect. (Nearly perfect, they aren't shielded).

I have owned my pair of 601's for over two and a half years now. For 330 bucks, they're a great little speaker. They have very sweet HF's and image fairly well for such a low cost speaker. As you would expect, the don't stay clean at high volume and the bass rolls off quick too. They cant hold their own compiared to my previous pair (KEF Q30's), but I've been fairly saticefied with them. I'm giving them 3 stars. They are great for the money, but there are better speakers out there!

Strength:

An OUTSTANDING speaker, with really neutral sound and very tight bass

Weakness:

Bass is, of course, limited, which you'd expect from a speaker of this size

I LOVE these speakers. They are, obviously, bookshelf speakers, and the laws of physics dictate that something with this small an enclosure will have limitations with regard to the deepest bass. But the bass it does have is exceptionally clean and tight -- enough so that I seldom find myself missing the really deep bass. They sound great at all volumes, and with all types of music -- with Ben Harper and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Charles Mingus and Miles Davis, south Indian classical music (violin, vocal), and everything else I've been in the mood to listen to. I occasionally think of some day adding a subwoofer to extend the bass, or maybe of upgrading to a fuller-range model in this line (and keeping these as my "B" speakers) -- but more often, I just love 'em as they are. (Used with a Marantz PM-57 amp, Nakamichi MB-10 CD, Audioquest Copperhead interconnects, Audioquest F-14 speaker wire.)

Strength:

Great highs and mids. Provide a warm soundstage, combined with the cc6 they are even better.

Weakness:

Low output in the bottom end, but most home theaters need a sub anyway.

Great deal. Better than speakers that are more expensive than these. When matched with a sub and the cc6 they provide for a great home theater. Great for music as well.

I listened to about every speaker in this price range, short of paradigm,, i found none that beat the B&W's.

Strength:

WARM SOUNDING,SOUND STAGE IS GREAT,BASS IS TIGHT.

Weakness:

INCREASED VOLUMES WILL SOUND HARSH.

These speakers served me well as front channel speakers at the time I was building my HT system and found out latter that the sounds were even better if you BI wire them .What a difference!! Like night and day. Although when playing rock music at extreme levels the 601's can sound very harsh and fatigueig. But you can be assured these are great speakers.Like any audio enthusist, dont take anybodys word for it, demo it yourself.

My system consists:
acurus act3
b&k 5000
b&w 603 front
b&w 601 rear
b&w cc6 center
velodyne F1500

Strength:

Accurate phasing, smooth high-end

Weakness:

High-volume distortion, not shielded!?

In building a ht/audio system for around $1200.00, I picked these to be my mains (used to be the Polk RT3's). These speakers seem to be quite the bargain-some high-end type performance for a decent price. The bass is tight yet for more I use a powered sub in my system. Compared to the Polk RT3's that were previously my main's, the 601's have a much smoother high-end, and sound more transparent. They are not shielded like my RT3's were, although they shouldn't be that close to the TV anyways. Decent construction and a sound that is noticeably better than similar priced speakers make these a good solution for a smaller HT/audio system.

One word describes these speakers: AWESOMEthats all im gonna say
i bought the 601's. I plan on getting the 602's for my main and one of the 2 center channels. These speakers blew away the competition at this price
You wont find any better for less than 2 grand.

Learned about the 601's from Hi-fi World magazine and auditioned and bought a pair. Its been 2 years now and i still get high everytime i burn a few hours listening to them. Vocals always give me that eerie feeling of having the singer in front of me. Paired them with a Nad 314, VDH and Nordost inter/spkr cables (bi-wired), Denon 650s cas. deck, an old Sony M33 cdp, on top of a heavy, veryy heavyyy custom made stand and a Castle a/c cleaner. Sound stage is wide and deep and all those audio jargons we've been reading about. At this price range these spkrs are definitely the best even beating those at a higher price. Bi-wiring and using heavy stands plus if possible hi-end cables a must to hear heaven. Highly recommended!!!!

Exelent in all areas .. bass thru mid to highs, very FAST and dynamic, enough power. Sound best with Yamaha AX-492 (around $400) (tryed about 15 other amps ... ), and much better with X-PRE and 2xX-A50 by MF ($1000)...
Try it with warm cd player like Marantz cd67se and you're in for a ... you'll see :)

These speakers are very nice and even nicer with a little help from a subwoofer. I bought the b&w dm601's in june of 97 and also considered the nht superone's and one of the models by paradigm. It was a tough decision between the nht's and the b&w's. I liked both very much, though they did not sound the same. I probably would have grown to like the nht's as much as I now like the b&w's. Systems components include an nad 304 integrated amp, marantz cd67 cd player, and m&k v125 subwoofer. Bargain system, great sound! 4 speaker rating
