    Strength:

    Build quality, Sound quality

    Weakness:

    Price if bought new.

With all the complaints about the software I was worried prior to getting the product in the mail. I was pleasantly surprised. The software that came with the player did not work with my OS, however, I downloaded a new version from the Sony website that worked with XP, NT and 2k. I have had not problems with it. The software is very intuitive. I had songs on the player within 5 minutes of the initial install. It does convert the tracks to ATRAC format but who cares? ATRAC is smaller than MP3 and it only takes ~15 seconds to convert the file before it is transferred to the player. Once converted, it doesn''t ever have to be converted again and you still retain your original .mp3 file. I think the software grip is WAY over done.

    Strength:

GREAT HARDWARE!!! Tiny, light, easy to use! Practical.

    Weakness:

The volume buttons suck, and are kinda insensitive.... NO OS SUPPORT, sony is crazy! And, retail price.... You can get a Ipod for just over that.... 5 GB versus 60MB... let me see here :) Firewire Versus USB :)

Great product PATHETIC software.... I''ve never been a sony fan, their products DO suck... I bought this thing from a friend to help him pay bills, so its cool. For $175 it was a steal.... Sure, the software sucks... and it (I honestly think it can be done) doesnt support any other OSes.... (WHEN I find drivers that work, will post...)

    Strength:

small size to put in pocket

    Weakness:

    Software, multi-OS support, limited memory

The product (including price) and its accompanying software are horrendously terrible. The software was created to work in Windows 98SE only! So forget it if you have Windows 98 original, 95, 2000, NT, and ME. You can't even upgrade the standard 64mb memory. The software uses an unpopular atrac3 as an alternative to mp3 to convert the songs. The software tends to be even buggier if you choose mp3 instead. At such a high price, I would've expected more from the product and software and from Sony!

    Good unit, solid workmanship

    Weakness:

Software?? Overall DIFFICULT use of product!

This unit is downright BAD. It's very difficult for me to look at some of Sony's good products in the same way after experiencing this pathetic offering. For more information, just look at the other reviews, ON THE GENERAL MP3 PLAYER REVIEW PAGE. This aside, THERE IS SOMETHING I MUST SAY:

I would like to take this time to BLAST Audioreview.com for their outright HYPOCRISY about this product. In their 'Top picks' section, this item has NO reviews, while in the 'Hall of Shame' it is BLASTED accordingly. Do you think this was an honest mistake, or were there other motives behind this goof? ($) It's good to note that there is a link to buy this item on the Top Picks page.

I have used and recommended Audioreview.com for quite a while, but for a site that claims to be 'by Audio enthusiasts, for audio enthusiasts', this is unforgivable.

    Weakness:

(I guess*) The Software, Price for a new unit is steep

I picked mine up on Ebay at what I thought was a fair price. Basically, I wanted something to take to the gym to drown out the classic rock station that they insist on playing while you try to get a decent workout. This fits the bill nicely.

*The Software- I was aware that many users were outraged having to use Sony's software prior to buying mine, so I guess it came as no shock to me- Frankly, it's no big deal as far as I'm concerned. It is very easy to use, in fact I never read the instructons and figured it out in a few minutes. Shrug. I agree that it may be a pain for some people to convert MP3's, but it is no big deal for me.

The player itself cranks out a nice level of volume. If you plan on using this unit for working out, I recommend the Sony MDR-A30 Sports headphones- they clean up easily and sound great. You can pick them up for less than $20. As mentioned above, the On/Off is on the top (end) of the unit, so it's easy to reach and won't turn off if you accidently bump into something. I wear long shorts when I work out, and I slip the player into a front pocket and forget about it. It weighs nothing so no bulk to worry about.

I recommend the product. If you can pick it up for less than half of the new suggested retail price, I say you are getting a heck of a bargain. I have no regrets.

    Weakness:

    F******** Sony's STUPID ATRAC
I'll never buy another Sony MP3 because of Atrac, however, the product is neat.

Sony is once again trying to do an Apple Mac vs Microsoft by having their own proprietary format!
    Stuff them!
I will only buy MP3 players in future which accepts "STABDARD" MP3 format and not their ridiculous ATRAC.
Remember their Beta video tape format, great quality but proprietary.
