Strength:

follow up

Weakness:

none

just a follow up,

this has to be the most popular diskman ever,
replaced my "buzz saw" version. and no problems since.
compared to the panasonic SL-SX271C .
have both sony and panasonic(new)
the sony has a battery charge indicator, the panasonic dosn't.
the sony has a digital volume (handy), the panasonic dosn't.
the sony can take metal hydride batterys, and as far as i can tell the panasonic can't ( the manual does not specify hydride).
skip: the sony in my oppinion is a 10 times better than
the panasonic.
also sony is smaller to me.
not a big sony fan BTW.but,,,,
well that's about it.

Strength:

lightweight, will not skip, 'touch' volume control, nice sound

Weakness:

headphones are 'weak'

For $70, this is an outstanding discman. I have a Panasonic discman with 10-second skip protection and this player is better in every aspect... style, no skipping, and most importantly, music quality. The volume control is better, because you actually have to press a button, as opposed to a 'wheel'. I can't get this thing to skip. And as for the previous review, get over the cheap construction. Obviously, if you're paying $70, it's going to be made of plastic. I too have a discman that I paid $120 for in 1991 from sony that still works like a tank. It skips like a bugger, has no bass control, and looks ugly. Pretty solid player... pretty solid value...

Strength:

size, unskipability

Weakness:

plastic cover

ok, befor you flame. we have to take this player back.
the sound of a buzz saw cutting through plastic.
the cd's seem to "ride to high" and therefor touch the plastic lid.
bummer, i'm going to exchange it though.the anti-skip is unbelievable.played a very scratched up cd. you know the one! this cd would not play through any other player but guess what? it played with only a few skips!it realy looked like swiss cheese.mucho holes,(ok i admit it, after it got scratched good it was just tossed around, couldn't throw it though.)i heard that there's "redundent" info on disks,
if that's so, then this player takes FULL advantage of that.
if there's a chance in h*ll that a cd is playable then this is the one to try. might even replace it as a "home" player.
wish it had the optical output though.

Strength:

BULLETPROOF! Nearly unskippable. VERY small. Excellent battery life.

Weakness:

As consistantly inconsistant as the rest of Sony's consumer products. Bass boost is heavy handed.

When I got this thing about 10 months ago, I was very happy. I felt I got a great deal on a tough model. The following week, I returned to the store. The headphones broke. They gave me some Aiwa headphones that were laying around. Fot the next 6 months I proceeded to BEAT THE LIVING CRAP out of the thing. I am a very heavy handed person and will find the limitations on just about anything mechanical (You should see how hard I'm hitting the keyboard right now). After one very happy month, it had to be repaired in two different ways, both minor boutton problems. I have a pair of AKG K-400 headphones, perhaps the best way to reveal the limitations of any CD or CD player. I'm not in love with the bass boost settings, but it was still a very good CD player, both through headphones and connected via line out to my Adcom 60 WPC amp and AR38s speakers. I thought the sound, while weak in volume, was terrific in either mode. The last straw was last week, when the headphone jack, the one part of the player I felt I was not abusive to. For $60 in repairs under warrantee on a $70 item, I was IRATE! Go get a Panasonic. Better value, better sound, better reputation. I'm gonna go buy a Panasonic right now!

Strength:

BULLETPROOF!! Great sound reproduction

Weakness:

Bass boost button is heavy handed. Headphones broke the week I got it.

I can't believe how tough this little sucker is! I have dropped it on the cement a number of times, and I am the kind of person who is very heavy handed with anything that has buttons. I was once running to catch a bus, the thing bounced on the ground and, as I was running, kicked it across the pavement for like 30 feet before somebody stopped with their foot. I picked up my cd player, popped the cd back onto the spindle and kept going. I know a number of people who have this and we all love it. It did need a few repairs, based entirely on my heavy handedness. I plug it into my home stereo (until I have more $$$) through the line out connection via gold-plated RCA connectors and it sounds terrific! Because P.C. Richard threw me some free, better sounding headphones, I have no complaints that the ones it came with had a short within 5 days.

Strength:

Wont skip.

Weakness:

Faulty headphone jack

I bought my CD player 100 days ago. Recently the headphone jack failed and cannot hear out of the right ear. If your CD player fails I do not reccommend calling them. I tried 21 times and got dead lines i got in once out of the 21 times. I mailed it in (nine days out of warranty)and they were going to charge me 56$ to repair and diagnostic fee even though I knew what the problem was. I now have to improvise by putting aluminum foil in the headphone jack.

Excellent! The best $80 that I've spent on audio! The unit, paired with the Sony Earbuds with bass just kicks serious gluteus maximus!

Strength:

it's a typical SONY! they save your portable cd player's batteries, and they don't fall off your head.

Weakness:

it's a typical SONY! boomy undefined bass, woolly mids and highs, somewhat uncomfortable

i borrowed the SONY MDR-A44L from a friend - trying to get good sound from a cheap pair of headphones. compared to the koss porta pro, sporta pro and ksc-35, the SONY MDR-A44L (and other SONY vertical headphones) are total piles of cr@p (pardon the french). boomy overpowereing unmusical bass, honky muddy can-like mids, harsh sibilant highs... blech. and they can hurt your ears after an hour of listening. i just can't listen to this piece of mediocrity.

now i know that once i listened to my koss porta pros (or the koss sporta pros and ksc-35's), i know just how bad most sub-$50 headphones (of any brand, type or size) sound compared to the kosses. listen to a friend's pair before you buy.

Strength:

EVERYTHING!
You can not make this thing skip, belive me, I tried.

Weakness:

The included earphones.

This is actually my fathers CD player for work but I get to use it sometimes. I simply love it. I have used it on long trips with my family and for school and school trips. On every trip it has never skipped. I have droped it, bumped it, and even had it sit on a medical shaking machine for about a minute; IT DID NOT SKIP! The only way to make it skip would be to trow it like a football.

I used this non-stop on a trip with my neighbors to Virgina from Baltimore, the trip was a 3 hour drive, with stops inbetween and the batter indicator didn't budge at all. I was even listening to my CD's and the second to highest volume level sometimes, sounded fantastic! I have Magneplanar speakers and a Top of the line Sony receiver driving them and even a sub, and it was the closest sound I have ever heard to my stereo for a portable CD Player.

It is a tad bit pricey but if you see it on sale, BUY NOW, ASK QUESTIONS LATER!

As a person who has been exposed to Mark Levinson Equipment and Quad products, this is a nice portable CD player.

Strength:

unbelievable skip protection, incredibly small and light, batteries will last forever

Weakness:

expensive, flimsy, headphones really suck

You honestly would have to break this CD player before it would skip. I have dropped it and smacked it until I was afraid I would crack the lightweight cover, and the music would not loose a beat.
Most other CD players are going for half the price of this one, and you would think you would get some better headphones for 100 dollars.
I have a pair of Aiwa pipephones that I use at work, and the difference is just ridiculous. The volume level at nine with the included pair is equal to about 3 with the Aiwas. I had it left on at nine when I plugged in my Aiwas about 30 minutes ago and I my ears are still ringing.
Also, I wanted to mention that this CD player does very well with CD-R's. I burn just about all my music, and this player would play CD's that my computer has trouble with.
This player also forwards to the next track very well. While some players search around for a while, this one will start playing the next song almost immediately.
So all in all, I am very impressed with this CD player.
Obviously some improvements could be made. A jogging player should be built a litte more rugged.
