Excellent.
One thing, GET a subwoofer - it has a subwoofer output and you'll love it when you hear with it.

Strength:

Speaker cabinets, aesthetics, plays very decent mid-frequencies.

Weakness:

Nothing that I didn't expect. (No low-bass, obviously.)

Very attractive. Bought for my wife for the kitchen. She really likes it, hasn't been turned off since she's had it! I think it's a little better than the GE Spacemaker she originally asked for!

Got it for $249 which seems to be the best price today.

Strength:

appearance, sound quality per size, sub out

Weakness:

volume control, alarm features

I bought this about 2 months ago from Circuit City for $249 on an open box. I'm happy with the unit overall, and like the other reviews I agree that the sound quality is good - far better than the Sony entry in this class and the others I looked at. I haven't hooked a sub up yet, but plan to as soon as I can find a good deal on a small one.

My major gripe is that I use this mainly as a bedside radio/alarm. It may just be my unit, but when I adjust the volume, it spikes up to very high levels until I stop moving the control. It will even change volume if I simply touch the volume control. I've asked JVC about this, but haven't heard back.

The other issue is that the alarm controls are klugey. You have to go through all the options to change one setting. The display also seems to revert to the default setting any time the unit's alarm is activated. That means every night I want to use it I have to go through the routine of changing the display and dimming it because it is too bright otherwise. I also have no idea why they did not enable the snooze function on the remote.

I think this is an ideal office system, but I somewhat regret buying it as a glorified alarm clock.

Strength:

Excellent sound when compared with "boom boxes".

Weakness:

What's with the "digital" analog clock only advancing by five-minute increments?! When I noticed this, I immediately went flipping through the owner's manual to see if I had a defective unit. Sure enough, the manual describes it as normal functioning. Wierd. Nonetheless - I give it high marks for ergonomics and styling.

..Agree with Dan. Sounds great for it's size. Beautifully styled, almost as attractive as a Bang & Olufsen compact system, but 1/3 price and probably better sounding.

Five stars overall, but for value I give it 4. Reason being, one could probably buy a pair of PSB Alpha's, and a used NAD receiver for the same price. Then hook up a personal CD player and you'll have a better sounding system for about the same money. I understand, of course, the idea here is to offer a compact unit that delivers reasonable sound in an attractive package.

Strength:

Beautiful styling; good build quality

Weakness:

slight defect of plastic facia; no mute button

Love it! ...why would anyone want one of those ridiculously styled boom boxes when for the same $ you could have something as attractively styled as the FS-7000? Sound quality is better than one would expect from such dimunitive speakers. ...While it isn't capable of producing the volume of a big boom box, the sound is far better balanced - more detail, and none of that ridiculously exagerated "thumping" bass.

This ultra compact systems rocks! It is very elegantly styled and sounds BIG despite its conservatively powered 13 watt RMS amplifier and 3" full range 4ohm speakers. This thing looks and sounds like a million bucks.
It is possible to push the little speakers to clipping, but only at extremely high volumes and with the bass circuit switched on and the bass level set to the maximum. Also, the remote doesn't have a mute button.

A single mono line level subwoofer output, RCA MD/Tape loop (in/out) and Auxiliary input helps expandability along with a digital optical output. It works well as an alarm clock with a dual layered LCD display with psuedo analog clock with all the normal snooze and alarm features.

I recommend you bring a CD and check it out in person at your local store. JVC's stock just went way up in my view. It cost $379, which may sound like a lot for such a tiny system, but...just look at it...and listen!

Strength:

Great sound, small size, very nice looks, quality product

Weakness:

Remote missing several things

This is a great product, I love it. I bought it on special, reduced by about USD$100. Considering this is New Zealand, I think I got it for a pretty good price. Anyway, I bought it based on the reviews on this page, and I agree with 99% of all that has been said so far. The sound is really good, it is nice and small, I love the wooden speakers, and the overall feel is of a high quality piece of equipment. Oh, and it plays CD-Rs like a dream.

So what don't I like about it? Minor things, just enough to irritate me now and again, but still loving it.

- You can't set the alarm from the remote. Argghh!!! You're already in bed and you realise that you need to set the alarm to a different time. Get out of bed and do it, baby.

- As mentioned before, there is no snooze on the remote, a biggie for me, since I hate getting up the first time the alarm goes off. So I just have to lie through the music for a while until I decide/have the strength to get up.

- And finally, it doesn't remember any of the display settings. So every time you switch it on or off, it goes back to the factory default setting (bright instead of dim, both analog and digital clocks when off, etc.)

These are minor things that make you wish they'd thought of when they designed it.

But my 5 star review stands. It is not easy to find a stereo this small, of very high quality, and at a pretty reasonable price.

Strength:

Excellent sound for price

Weakness:

No user definable preferences

I have owned both the FS-7000 and the FS-8000 (returned). The FS-8000 is NOT just a FS-7000 with a "matching" subwoofer. Do NOT purchase the FS-8000. It has smaller, paper-coned oblong speakers and a WAY too big, ugly, black mis-matchted subwoofer. To make matters worse - the Active Hyper-Bass SUPER PRO circuit is non-defeatable in the FS-8000 - as in "always on" - which just aggrivates the subwoofer with booming, flabby, uncontrollable, rediculous bass. JCV even went so far at to remove the AHBSP button from the remote control!

Yes! Buy the wonderful sounding, more controllable FS-7000 and add a small, powered subwoofer. I'm have mine in the bedroom with a used, small Velodyne. This really makes the FS-7000 really shine. One can back off the unit's bass controls, turn off the AHBSP and get much cleaner sound. I've played the FS-7000/subwoofer combo to some of my audiophile club members and they are blown away at the sound per dollar. Truly stunning performance for $250.00 + sub!

The only complaint I have is that there is no user preference memory. After adjusting the illumination brightness and display type I prefer, any input cancels my choices and reverts to the unit's default. Before going to sleep, I have to reset my preferences.

Oh - the main unit is a tad deep on my nightstand. Other than that, the FS-7000 makes for a wonderful, tiny bedroom/dorm/office system. Do not buy the FS-8000 - worse sound, worse product - you have been warned :-)

As an option to purchasers, I sure wish JVC would come out with a tiny, matching CHERRY, powered sub to compliment the FS-7000. WOW - What a no-brainer!
