I love this little system. It's like the 7000 but has black speakers, not wood. I was looking for a small CD system that would double as an alarm clock and it sits right by the bed. Yes, it's JVC, but I listened and was impressed. The sound is full and rich, and you can expand with a sub. It has a digital out which was nice when fooling with my new minidisc recorder. I wake up to CD sound every morning - it even has a snooze button! It's an excellent second system for a bedroom, office, dorm room and it has expandability. Take a CD along to the store, compare with the other micro systems and you'll be impressed.

I have been looking at the FS-5000 for a while. The reviews on this site finally convinced me to get one yesterday. I chose the FS-5000 over the FS-7000 because of price. The FS-7000 is about $100.00 more. But the two models have pretty much the same features.
I hooked it up last night and was amazed by the sound quality coming out of those small speakers. Now, I'm thinking about hooking a sub to it. I should have gotten it last Christmas. I agree with most of the reviewers on these 2 units. Neither the FS-5000 nor the FS-7000 will disappoint you.

Strength:

BIG sound for small speakers.

Weakness:

none

I keep this system in my room and use it everyday to wake me up and just to listen to during the day. I have never been dissapointed with the sound and I think it's great. The sound is surprisingly good for such small speakers. Also, it is works great as a radio/CD alarm clock. I hooked up my MD player to it and it is a perfect set-up. I really recommend this product!

Strength:

Excellent sound, uses little shelf space

Weakness:

Opening CD player turns power on, a minor annoyance.

Like one of the other persons here, I bought my FS-5000 refurbished (via OnSale) but I haven't noticed any transport noises whatsoever. It's quiet, plays beautifully and I love it.

My only complaint is that opening the CD player turns the power on, and the player picks the last usage to determine what mode it's in... so in my case, it picks the AM radio (which is what wakes me up in the morning). I'd rather have it switch to CD mode automatically if I open the CD player.

Still, that's a VERY minor complaint. This little system was a great purchase!

Weakness:

Remote not as intuitive as it could be.

Bought this for 200 bucks at Costco and couldn't be happier with it! Using it in my bedroom, which is about 325 sq ft in area with vaulted ceilings and it delivers incredible sound from CD or crystal clear FM reception. Let's not kid ourselves, if you spend 200-300 bucks on a full system, don't look to boil the ocean with fancy specs and perfect sound...just enjoy, which this puppy ably allows you to do!

Strength:

You can connect quite a few things to it.

Weakness:

Its about $50 overpriced.

Currently I have a Sony M/D and a VCR connected to my
FS 5000. I just added a new pair of Infinity RS 3 speakers.
The speakers are 8 ohm (JVC's were 4 ohm) The FS 5000 plays
then just fine. They sound much better.
I would love the unit at $225. $245 its still ok. $300
is getting a bit high. Then again some units costing more
do not sound as good.

Strength:

Excellent sound for such a small system

Weakness:

After a year, I can't find any

This is an excellent system that can now be found for under $200, and well worth it. Very solid, has AUX and Subwoofer outputs which give it flexibility.
Very good separation, excellent dynamic range. Don't have to have it cranked to hear musical details.
Sleep function is great, as is wake up and snooze feature. Snooze button on remote would be helpful, although then I'd probably never wake up.
All in all a great little system that's worth every penny!

Strength:

Looks, sound

Weakness:

Lack of display preferences

A nifty-looking compact system, something hard to find these days. The sound does not disappoint. Limiting bass/treble control, but it's a mini. AM/FM reception is good, above average, now only if there were some good radio stations.... Minor inconveniences - no display preferences; defaults to factory settings, just another couple button pushes everytime it's powered on. Really a 4.5, but I'm giving it a 5. More than I wanted to spend, but you'll forget how much you've spent after giving it a listen.
