Strength:

It looks super!

Weakness:

Sound

I must disagree with previews opinions. How a 3’’cone full range speaker can be so good to reproduce accurate bass and trebles as good? Are you nuts (no offence) or JVC have a super-technology at a super-low price ($450 regular price – I saw in England this system at £150)?
I didn’t buy this executive – and the reason isn’t money – I have a good Panasonic PM15 (bi-amp) in my bedroom. But I listen JVC-FS5000 (very similar with JVC-FS7000 – except 3 mode gain system) and, comparing with CD/tuner-only micro-system Panasonic SC-PM01, with 2 way speakers (OK?), the bass of JVC seems ordinary and the JVC’s trebles sucks – practically they aren’t there (personal I think that the highest frequency reproduced by JVC is 12-13kHz or so). What about the power – I’m not a kid to take as good that the 2x13W are enough, OK? And, by the way, even the PM01 (2x15W) sounds much stronger than that FS, and much dynamic.

What is really great at the FS series? The looks. FS look like a super-micro, I must agree. For that I give 5 stars – for sound only 2 (FS means Freakin’ Style, not Sound). Total – 3!

Conclusion
I just say that (again and again) – you, who want to buy some audio, listen, listen and listen again before to decide which is better. Don’t look at the look! That’s all!

Bye!

Strength:

great sound, small footprint, perfect for office space or tight room condition

Weakness:

radio reception and defaulting to factory display

My sony boom box stop working, actually the cd player stop recognizing cds. I wanted a system for my office with good sound. I tested several micro audio systems. For the price, the FS-5000 sound better than most systems price at their range including the aiwa, phillips, rca etc… I bought a open box model at circuit city. After speaking to the manager that Media Play and SoundTrack had the same model for $249, Circuit City sold the open box model to me for $199. I hope this office mini system will last longer than my sony boom box I had previously for 2 yr.

Strength:

Nice full sound, smallest footprint around, simple design. Great for any office situation.

Weakness:

None that really stand out.

I was looking for a small audio system for my office. First I shopped many stores to see and listen to what was available. I found only 3 systems that fit my requirments ( cd, radio, size, sound and price ) The systems where JVC FS series, Sony cmt-ed1 and Bose "wave w/ cd. After listening and seeing all three I decided on the JVC FS-5000.
What a great sound and simple design. This little guy met all of my requirments. It is smaller then the Sony. Remember I was not looking for a system to use in my living room but for my office. It cost half as much as the Bose. I made my purchase through the net at www.e-closeout.com. I bought the FS-5000 that was factory refurbished for $200.

I compared this system to a Sony CMT-ED1, a Bose Wave and a JVC FS-7000.

Strength:

Weakness:

noise of CD mechanism

I purchased this in October 2000 and thought I got a steal at BJ's for $149. But over the past couple of months, the CD mechanism became louder and louder (especially while the CD was in pause mode) until yesterday, when it started to make a very loud humming sound while the CD was playing. I just returned it to BJ's today and now it's even marked down to $129! I wonder if all these units sold at BJ's are reconditioned and not factory new? It's unfortunate, because this is one heck of a unit if it weren't for the noise problems.

Strength:

The sound coming out of this little unit is amazing! Alot of base for a small room. The acoustics on this baby is SO clear that I'm hearing words that I've been singing wrong for the last 6 months!!!! haha!

Weakness:

Remote controlled base and treble is a pain. Also I absolutely can't stand that you can't press "numbers" to go from cd track to cd track. Instead you have to press a "forward" arrow. The radio is terrible unless you insert antennas etc. My $10.00 clockradio can find a radio station better than this unit!

The JVC FS-5000 is the best thing I've bought for $185.00 US (Getting it on a boxing day sale was a nice coup) I got the JVC FS-7000 series as well for $245.00 US (both BRAND NEW) Hunt around and be patient. 5 years from now, you'll still be loving this little guy. It's got a nice backend of hookups that will allow you to grow as new things catch your eye.

Overall a good decent unit if you only want to play one cd at a time.

7000 series. Go try that! It's the same unit but has got some really nice speakers. Not much difference in sound quality though. For the price and quality...go for the 5000 series. Unless of course you're REAL serious in which case you'd better just go get both. ha!

I love this little thing, but I think I would spend some money on a subwoofer e.g. JVC SP-PW3000.

Strength:

great sound
tiny size

Weakness:

no snooze on the remote

I have the ux-5000 which the euro version on the fs-5000. It's exactly the same but dual voltage.

If :
1. You're budget is about $220
2. You aren't looking for a "hi-fi" system (see #1)
3. You don't need a tape deck
4. You want something that's SMALL

Then this is the system for you.
I listened to about 20 different micro and mini systems while looking for something that would be very small.

This is for sure the BEST bang for the space, and probably one of the best bangs for the buck.

One last brief update. I still love this thing, although the volume-control problem gets worse with time.

Torture test:
My 14-year-old decided to supply background music for a driveway basketball game, so he set up one of the 5000s on the back porch and just cranked it up ALL THE WAY.

And left it that way. For a couple of hours.

Guess what? No damage at all. Did it sound good? Not really. If you really put the volume control all the way up the compressor can't entirely prevent distorted sound, but it won't let you damage the speakers either, which could very easily happen with a low-power amp driven into heavy clipping.

Little discoveries:
The bass boost switch also boosts the high treble. It acts like the "loudness" control on old receivers. So when you're using the subwoofer you might want to turn the bass control on the 5000 down but put on the boost switch to catch some extra treble crispness. Season to taste, as always.

It really is important to be on-axis when you're listening to the system. Treble falls off precipitously otherwise. The speakers sound best when they're up off the surface of a desk or table. Mine are actually sitting on top of some unused KLH 911Bs, but a fluted brass cylinder topped by ebony blocks wouldn't be a bad choice, either.

If there's room, a simple $5 VHF rabbit ears TV antenna does wonders for the stereo FM reception.

A great little system.
