Aiwa make the worst audio equipment on the face of the Earth. That's that and that's all. I was a fool to buy this piece of rubbish. I was duped by the memory of past Aiwa successes but that was soooo many years ago. Things have changed at Aiwa since those glory days. They really ought to consider diverging into farm machinery now.

The CD player was the first to go. Then the left hand side tape deck, then the right. Now the radio is the only thing that works. I am considering melting it with a blow torch and turning it into a piece of sculpture tentatively entitled "The Plastic Sound Tsunami".

I say it again - AIWA IS DEATH!

Strength:

Good sound quality. Works great with my DVD player.

Weakness:

CD Player

I join the chorus of those who condemn this model. I have used other Aiwa products that were good, but this CD player was a piece of junk. It was a terrible investment. I would probably not buy another Aiwa for fear of a repeat incident. Attempts to contact Aiwa on their website were in vain. They apparently don't care about their customer once they have the cash in hand. I would really have liked it if the CD player worked.

Strength:

Flexibility (use with DVD player)

I bought this unit in September 1996. The CD player stopped recognizing CDs after only 1 year of use. (immediately following the end of the warranty).

The cost to have it fixed ($150+ or almost one half the cost of the unit) did not seem appropriate, therefore we lived with playing tapes and using the radio.

The sound is incredible, though, and we have hooked up our DVD player to play through it (it provides incredible surround sound.

I've tried all of the AIWA and review suggestions, including cleaning the laser, to no avail. I agree with the notion that this unit should be recalled.

Strength:

Good, full, rich sound

Weakness:

CD playback (especially pos laser)

I bought this cd system 5 yrs ago. I still use it because it still sounds nice. The bass response is decent for 5.25" drivers and i like the full reproduction produced by the 3-way speakers. Unfortunately AIWA made some major mistakes with the CD player. Mine malfunctioned in about a year and a half. AIWA used some pos laser made my sony (i think) that just doesnt work (as seen by other reviews). It is basically guaranteed to malfunction. Other than that, the system is quite a high end model (at least for its era: 1996). The tape players took a good beating from me, and still provide excellent playback/recording. Its unfortunate that AIWA screwed up on this high end model with the CD player. I am now in the process of buying a new cd shelf system and am converting this system to be used as computer speakers. I hope that AIWA has improved on the quality of their cd players with their new systems.

Strength:

Powerful, enjoy having the subwoofer output which is lacking in many of the newer systems.

Weakness:

Either Motor drive is terrible and player fails to read cd.
to read cd.

I enjoyed the system, but the frustrations with the player not reading CD's off and on is horrifying. Had it fixed twice. Great power and nice sound. I really hope to rumors are not true about Aiwa lasers.

CD Player - Paid $150.00 to fix it.

If they have a design problem or component quality problem, they should recall this thing.

Strength:

Better sound quality than nearest rivals.

Weakness:

Abysmal quality of components, meaning poor reliability.

Don't actually have the Aiwa mini-system featured here, but I would like to add to the other condemnations of Aiwa reviews. I have had an LCX-300 minisystem for 4 years, and during that time I have had to replace the CD player's laser twice, at a cost of £80 each time (about $110). The problem was that the CD would take literally 20 odd attempts to recognise a disc had been inserted, and then refused point-blank to play any tracks if it did. This is just unforgiveably shoddy, as much cheaper and smaller manufacturers obtain higher levels of dependability with ease. Nor was this problem due to heavy usage. My brother purchased an Aiwa NSX-330, and suffered the same problem again and again, meaning that the cost of an Aiwa system should be considered to be at least double it's sale price if repairs are included. Aiwa lasers are clearly defective and therefore extortionate, despite their appearance of value and the undeniably decent sound quality the system provides. Unless you really have no CDs you want to play, AVOID AIWA LIKE THE PLAGUE. If I could have given either system a '0' rating I would have.

Strength:

Tape player and radio works. Also lots of nice red and green lighting.

Weakness:

My CD player does not work. Even though I reordered the system, both times I got a speaker that rattles when even moderate bass is put through it.

Although I have got some good use out of it, I wouldn't recommend it even to someone on a tight budget. I think Aiwa just makes bad CD players. I heard a friend of a friend had the same problem with an Aiwa CD player, but I didn't realize how widespread it was until reading these reviews. Shop around and get something else unless you still love tapes.
