Strength:

Puts you in control of your TV viewing.

Weakness:

I have had 2 units break in the last 6 months. The repaired one came back with a 90 day warranty so I am stuck paying for it to be repaired a 2nd time. I will never buy a Phillips product again.

Absolutely look the technology.

Strength:

Really opens up the DSS experience. I don't know how I lived without it.

Weakness:

Get a new learning remote, the pack-in will drive you mad!!! Only use the digital out fo the music channels unless timing errors don't bother you.

Exelent unit, works exactly as required. I have yet to have any problems so to speak of in with this unit. My only complaints are the horribly numb remote,(It can take up to 5 seconds to respond to a command)and a lag in the AC-3 out.(D/A problem) It sends out the video but takes longer to process the audio.

Strength:

Very user-friendly interface. Easy to program. Pausing live TV is Awesome!

Weakness:

The reliability of this unit is horrible! I Love TiVo ... I just want on one that works.

I installed my Philips DSR6000R and immediately fell in love with TiVo. The interface was very similar to my RCA DirecTV recievers but more responsive. After a couple of days waiting for it to download the DirecTV Channel Guide I began to record all my favorite shows. It was Great! ... for a couple of weeks. The tuner in my first DSR6000R went out after 2 weeks. The second unit worked for two days. The third DSR6000R arrived DOA. All through this process my old RCA reciever has no signal problems. I love TiVo ... I hate the DSR6000R. I'm looking for a more reliable unit. I just ordered a Sony...keep your fingers crossed.

Strength:

Great to be able to record shows you'd normally miss or fast forward as necessary. Pause control is s tremendous benefit when interruptions occur.

Weakness:

Customer Service has very limited capabilities to resolve issues. I called 4 different times, 4 bad experiences. Avoid if possible and use Internet. Philips hardware broke. Cannot contact Philips directly to assist with missing power cord.

Revolutionizes the experience of watching television. I really enjoy being able to watch my favorite shows at my own leisure. TIVO is a great invention. However the Philips unit has gone out twice on me, once requiring it to be sent it where they charged me $99.00 to fix (which by the way is the original price) so essentially, I have spent over $200 on my $99.00 unit to date.

I have the Philips DSR6000R DIRECTV it works great. The best way to watch tv. Oustanding picture quality easy to use. Tivo did a very nice job with these espeically once the software was released to allow the unit to record two shows at once and watch a third.

Strength:

The usefulness of my $150 TiVo overshadows just about all of my other $20K in home theatre hardware! It''''''''s impossible to live without TiVo once you get hooked. You''''''''ll never use a VCR again. The unit is very inexpensive, relative to the utility of the product.

Weakness:

Possible reliability problems. 12-month DirecTV contracts through some online dealers. Slow remote on earlier models (still being shipped from Philips, BTW).

Once you''''''''ve had TiVo, you can NEVER go back! Having said that, the Philips DSR6000 is a very good implementation of an integrated DirecTV receiver and TiVo recorder (known in the inner circles as a "DirecTiVo"). Where else can you get a 40GB IDE hard drive, Linux operating system and two MPEG real-time recorders in a box for as little as $99? Most all DirecTiVo receivers have the exact same internal hardware and software. Of these, the Philips DSR6000 is the least expensive. This tends to show a little in the areas of IR remote response speed and reliability. Most DSR6000 users complaining of slow remotes have had their remotes swapped out by Philips for little or no cost. This just leaves reliability. Over this past week, my Philips DSR6000 died completely after six months of regular usage. I cannot say for sure what happened, since it''''''''s being fed by a UPS *and* a Monster Power line conditioner. I can only assume it was "it''''''''s time." Due to the serious physical addiction of TiVo, I immediately ordered another one and am currently awaiting delivery. Depending on the life of this box, I may update my scores below. BE CAREFUL of the imposed "cell phone-esque" 12-month commitment agreements floating around the Internet. If you''''''''re an existing DirecTV subscriber, it may not be critical, but if you''''''''re just dabbling with the idea of DirecTV, there''''''''s some sleaze afoot, so be very careful signing on the digital dotted line if there''''''''s a mandatory contract associated. One final point to ponder is that, very soon TiVo will be coming out with their "Series 2" models for DirecTV. Currently, the standalone Series 2 is already available. This hardware line is more than twice as fast and has digital input/output ports via USB. A consumer looking to just get into DirecTiVo now might be well advised to "wait ''''''''n see" what happens with these new, improved Series 2 units. Rumors are that they''''''''ll support full home network capabilities and TiVo-to-TiVo communication.

Strength:

Works great. Simple-to-use, easier than a VCR.

Weakness:

Took FOREVER on-the-phone with DirecTV to start-up the unit. Don''t know why.

My brother-in-law gave me the unit as a Christmas gift. He''s had it for awhile and thought that I would like it. As a DirecTV user from back when they first started out, I was excited by the idea of adding Tivo. I have had NO problems with it, and I am looking to purchase a second one. The only drawback I''ve had is that I record so many things - because it is so easy - I will never be able to watch them all!

Strength:

Price

Weakness:

I can't tell because every unit I had was defective.

I have gone through purchasing, installing, and returning to Circuit City three of the $99 Philips DirecTiVo units. All were factory sealed new units. The first one came with an access card number that had already been issued to someone else. The other two had defective optical digital audio outputs that caused extreme audio dropouts. (The first one may have been defective as well, but I never got that far along in the setup because DirecTV could not activate the card.) All three also had poorly operating remotes that were slow and had buttons that often didn't respond to pressing.

I finally called Philips and the service rep said that the units had all been recalled a long time ago for the optical output problem and he was surprised they were still on the market. The recalled units can be identified by the model number "DSR6000R01" that is on the white bar codes sticker on the side of the box with the serial number and DirecTV access number. It's the "01" at the end that designates the recalled units. Anything other than 01 is OK.

I gave this information to the Circuit City store manager on the third return, and he said that not only were they unaware of the recall, but Circuit City is still shipping the "01" units to the local stores. The "01" units are all they have in stock in Los Angeles, even the other stores he check by phone.

The Philips rep offered to replace the unit, but he said new units are backordered for 18 days. (This may coincide with info a Good Guys sales rep told me: They were out of the DSR6000s and Philips was supposed to be shipping them a replacement model in a silver color in the next few weeks.)

I didn't want to wait 18 days because I already reconfigured my system's cabling to work with the TiVo instead of a VCR. So I went to Best Buy and bought the $129 Hughes unit, which is very similar except that it is silver and has the better remote. (Is this the next generation box that Good Guys is waiting for?) If the price drops anywhere in the next 30 days, I'll go back with the receipt for a refund of the difference from BB.

P.S. If you are using analog audio outputs on a defective Philips unit, you won't notice the problem unless you later upgrade to optical digital output. If that does turn out to be case, I hope you upgrade and discover the problem BEFORE the Philips warranty expires!
