Strength:

Nice to look at, integrated, small footprint

Weakness:

Sounds very bad. I can't listen to music on these.

I witnessed this system at a friend's place. I had very low expectations and was actually surprised ! HT subwoofers usually produce extremely bad bass, boomy, wooly, and slow. It's the first thing I notice when I listen to a HT system : too small woofers in too small boxes, pushed hard over the limit. This one was quite good by comparison, and it is definitely not the weak point in this system. Bass is OK here. However the midrange and treble are not at all up to the price. The 5 column loudspeakers failed to deliver any exciting music. They sound like cat scratching to me. Very bright, fatiguing, agressive... It is OK for action movies but definitely not for any kind of music except maybe R&B or Techno, and even then, those who say one does not need good speakers to listen to Techno should try a really good system once. It does matter. So I find it to be very expensive for the sound. At $1000 you can get a decent DVD player, an amp and a pair of good speakers which will put the Sony to same. It won't have 5.1 or SACD but WHO CARES ? So definitely not recommended.

Strength:

Very stylish looks, great value (with rebate), excellent sound

Weakness:

not upgradable, strange remote, not a lot of control over settings (doesn't bother me though)

After months of research, could not resist the great style and $200 rebate from Sony (feel sorry for the guy below who paid $1000 a month ago, yikes!). Do not hesitate, this system is AWESOME. As a musician, I was concerned about the comments regarding the bass, but those reviewers must be really blasting the sound because it sounded amazing in my living room (24x12 AND with 14' valuted ceilings). In fact, after placing the subwoofer in the corner for maximum effect, I had to turn the level down as the bass was too much for me. All in all, GREAT product, VERY easy set up, great sound and amazing value (under $500!!!)

Strength:

Look at it! Freakin looks awesome! Slim design, easy to hook up. Sony brand name. Clear sound for movies and SACDs. Did I say it looks awesome?

Weakness:

MAX volume too low :( , so gets a 4 . But in a small sized living room would do just fine.

Ok, I've been a Sony buyer for a very long time now. All of my electronics, computers, and tvs are sony, except speakers b/c I felt Sony's speakers did not produce great sound. I been looking for a home theatre package for my apt. for a very long time. After a very long search, I finally bought the Sony Dream System. I bought the system based on performance, looks, and overall convenience. Out the box, this system is absolutely beautiful and very very easy to hook up. I don't think there is any other home theatre package that even comes close to matching the elegant looks of this. Sony has made a winner with this one! This is not the ultimate system, but is a very good system. This is perfect for an apartment sized living room, but it is in no way suitable for a large sized living room. The sound is very clear and bass is just right. Only problem (which everyone else has) is the systems MAX volume is too low. Other than that, the system rocks! Sony is offering a $200 rebate right now so I really got the system for $468! Now thats a steal...no wait, thats robbery! hehe.

Strength:

Incredibly small and good looking unit, DVD/CD changer, DVD playback options and amount of formats it plays (VCD, SVCD etc.), easy to set up...

Weakness:

Uses Sony connectors that can not be combined with other equipment, low-powered subwoofer, DVD changer is slightly slow, mediocre connection options...

This system is not bad at all. It's not the best I've heard, but it's okay. At first, the system sounded poor but I realized that there are a bunch of settings that I was missing. The bass is a little low but if you turn the subwoofer up in the settings, it's not that bad. The back speakers could probably use a little more punch. Overall, I got $100 back for buying this system because of my Sony rewards credit card, which is why I chose it to begin with.

Strength:

Looks: clean lines, great speaker stands, slim unobstrusive profile, contemporary. Sound: Clear, full (even at high volumes) Picture: Crystal clear Space: 5 DVD/CD changer, reciever, amp, all in one amazingly small system Easy of use/ease of set-up

Weakness:

Weak Sub: adequate bass but won't shake the room Limited inputs/outputs Small remote buttons

Hopefully most people who use this site use common sense when sorting through the user reviews. This system cost $1000 and can be had online closer to $700 and as such it is not a high-end system. Which means if you are an audiophile or have been checking out or listening to B&W speakers this is not the system for you. If you want a nice home theater system, that is easy to set-up, easy to use, has good sound, a great picture, is affordable and is beautifully designed then this is the home theater system for you. The system is easy to set-up and if done properly will give great movie surround sound that clear and rich. It makes movies come to life which means you will spend more time watching movies at home then in the theaters. Because the engineers and designers wanted to create an easy to use slim system it doesn't have to many bells and whistles that the higher priced systems have. However, what they did do is include preprogrammed/calibrated sound fields that work incredibly well. Better than any equalizing my untrained ear could distinguish. Cd play back is fine and SACD play back is fantastic. I bought the system mainly to watch movies and TV programs and that is where it's value lyes (remember the system cost considerably less than other home theater systems). The system looks incredible and doesn't need speaker stands because of the slick intergrated speaker stands. The system has a great progressive scan dvd than when hooked up with s-video or component cables delivers a stellar picture (if your TV is capable of taking advantage of the 480p resolution). Yes the sub is weak (larger rooms) but with proper placement (in the corner)it isn't as weak. Yes the remote bottons are small and the remote is not backlit, but these are minor gripes. Many people have complained about reliablity, but i have had none of those problems. Basically it comes down to expectations. What do you expect to get from a $1000 system vs a $3000 or more system.

Strength:

- sleek asthetically pleasing design - SACD - Clean crisp sound

Weakness:

- Slow disc changer - remote buttons are small for people with fat fingers!

I purchased this system based on the needs of sleek design good full sound and an all in one system that delivers the latest technology. This system has met all of my expectations. The sounds field options negate the need for separate bass and treble controls. DVD video playback through a 27 in vega is excellent. DVD audio is as expected and sound is very clear and reasonably full. Cd play back is very good and variety of sound fields gives many options from 2 ch stereo through a variety of digital sound options that can create a multi channell effect. SACD playback is incredible. If someone purchased this system expecting to achieve the impact of a $3,000 component system they will be dissappointed. I believe the system delivers as promised and is more than adequate for an average sized room. It won't blow your brains out but is very clear at maximum volume with minimum distortion.

Strength:

-Impressive sleek design. -Easy to hook up. -Excellent DVD playback. -SACD's sound good.

Weakness:

-Cannot adjust bass and treble levels -Sub Woofer does not produce a good deep sound, and is passive rather that active -Bass sounds very hollow -Not enough inputs -FM/AM and CD's sound aweful (no bass and trebble controls) -Very slow CD changer. -Buttons on remote are small.

Expectations fell way short. I purchased this system online from Best Buy, unfortunately it could only be purchased online and not in the store, hence I could not demo it. With its good looks and impressive specs I thought I would take a chance. It was a big mistake. If you are stricly impressed with the systems looks then you will be happy. The system does produce a descent sound but there are far too many negatives than positives.
