Strength:

BRILLIANT,CRYSTAL CLEAR PICTURES EASY TO OPERATE.

Weakness:

the black model doesn't match my RXV-800.Wanna be classy? go for the GOLD!and you won't be disappointed!

I bought this YAM!due to good remarks it received from HCC mags.I was very impressed with its video quality CRYSTAL CLEAR PICTURES!all i can say.I was very fortunate coz it is MULTI-REGION at 400usd only.It plays perpectly plays well my DVD'S without any trouble. My room mate who bought his pioneer233 mainly due to its cd-r and cd-rw features decided to bought this YAMMY and sold his pioneer.Reason? layer changed of pioneer is very noticeable.secondly it always pause for a few seconds and then it plays again especially those Region3 and region4 DVD'S while this YAMMY plays perpectly! its quiet too!my only gripe is i was not able to get the champainge GOLD model yammy.I dont care if it is not cd-r or cd-rw as long as it plays perpectly and delivers STUNNING video quality im very much satisfied.LUV YUUUUUMMMMM.

To start, some people have mentioned that this dvd player is similar to some other units, well it is not similar, it is those other units. The internal componentry is made by thompson consumer electronics which, as you know, make rca, proscan.. etc.. This unit is identical to a Panasonic A310 (I think that is what the model is) It is also the same as my old unit, the RCA RC5510P, and Denon also makes a dvd player with the same components. That said, there are differences between the other manufacturers. The RCA I was using previously included an onboard dolby digital decoder, and 6 channel pre-outs. The Yamaha unit does not, nor does it have RCA's nifty shuttle jog dial on the front. (I never did use that once btw) - The RCA unit I had before must have have an older version of the firmware and it failed to play some dts tracks on some poorly mastered dvd's (Ultimate dvd platinum edition) but I have never had a problem with it playing any other properly mastered dts discs. One thing the yamaha does have, over the other manfactures using the same guts, is the tray is faster, smoother and the whole unit is more quiet.

There was no reason for me to purchase this unit, as it was identical to my old one (aside from the problem i mentioned with some dts tracks on the test dvd's.. I just wanted it to match my receiver and cd player.. the yamaha plays those tracks the rca couldn't, so the firmware in this release must be newer.

All in all anyone of these dvd players are excellent choices. You must only decide between, style, looks etc.. and remote! (uif you plan on usings its remote and not your receivers universal remote.

As an aside, someone mentioned this player was lacking because it did not have a coaxial digital out, and only an optical digital out.. just so you know, dts output is only compatible with bitstream type output, and that is only offered with optical out.. the coaxial out is no better or worse, (the signal can't be degraded - it's digital, a 1 is a 1 a 0 is a 0, nuff said - the only thing that will screw up the signal is to unplug it :) dolby digital (ac3) can be sent via rf, or via coaxial digital if it's already demodulated into a pcm format. but not dts.. so that is why it has an optical digital out.

besides.. it's cool to be optical man :)

Strength:

Looks great, well made.
Quiet
Quality of Audio and Video is Amazing

Weakness:

Price

I very recently purchased a yamaha dvd-s796 and think it is a great dvd player. It does evertyhing I would want a dvd player to do, THAT IS PLAY DVD'S! I have had yamaha components in my home theater system for the last ten years, so that is why I bought this unit. I have never had any problems with any of my yamaha stuff, so I keep going back to them. Aside from the price being more than what I wanted to pay, I still beleive you get what you pay for. So far, yamaha has proved me right.

Just a side note, I know people who bought dvd players for around $100 - $200 dollars, who have problems watching movies. For example: freezing, skipping, jittery motion, pixelization, and glitches.

My yamaha has never done any of these things!

Strength:

DTS, DD and Open close button on remote! Fantastic picture quality, sound without flaw and no tray noise, doesn't skip easy!

Weakness:

Remote could have been designed a little better (contour), 2.1 channel audio is always default, zoom only valiable in macrovision titles, doesn't play CD-R's!

I have a friend with the same DVD player and they have DD, DTS and all the trimmings! The reason I started looking for a proper home DVD player was because I currently own a PC DVD drive, with a decoder card (a package that costs almost as much as a trimmed tailor made one) and almost every time I lugged my full tower case and 50kg monitor out to the lounge room, it would literally not turn on! Well after about 5 months this gave me the poops, (anyone who has submitted a review knows why I said that instead of the proper meaning) enough to go out and buy a proper one, with precise audio (D/PL, DTS and DD)!

I don't currently use DD or DTS at the moment so I can't comment on that, just D/PL, I have a set of Sony SAVA-7 speakers, fantastic sound for little speakers with good bass response time! (And YES one day I am going to upgrade 2-3months and finally get my 5.1 channel system fully functional).

The picture quality is great and the sound; although I am only using D/PL it is still exceptional! I enjoy the fact that it has a remote and that it does in fact play macro vision protected titles!

I sorta didn't want DTS because I knew it costed more to have that feature! But Yamaha and anyone for that matter, don't release player or receivers with just DD, it's either, just D/PL or DD and DTS! (No choice)

I would have given this player a 4star rating on price but it had a recommended retail price of $799 and well, that was a little to overpriced (got it for $680)!

I gave it 4stars overall because it annoyed me that it didn't play CD-R's! I am into making my own custom CD's (I don't own a jute box) and I found that to be a shame!
Also the remote was a little too basic!
I know lots of people go on about remotes and it is true that if a remote is too basic or advanced it can turn you of using it and make you wanna go press the play button on the machine!

All in all this DVD player is top of the line and probably the best player by Yamaha compared to its more expensive models, which do virtually the same thing anyway! I recommend it in every aspect and hope it brings you fun and enjoyment as it has me and will continue to! (Well until I get a PDP).

Hope this review helps

Strength:

CD Quality And Video Quality.

Weakness:

No Coaxial Digital Output.

It's not the same ambiance as the Theatre but still,
Colors/brightness/details.. better than the theatre..
(The first three i saw: The Matrix/ The Fifth Element / Godzilla).
Details i've never saw / hear before!

Well in a few months a real product review, but for know first impressions: very good and easy to operate.
And my Favorite CD's sound a lot better (See review Infinity IRS Omega) Linked to Yamaha RX 2095 RDS Thru Optical Digital Output.

Main pre-amp out to poweramp QSC USA900 (Not really a High-end Amp but as in my review the Omega's needs lot's of power!)

Has anyone owned this unit more than a year? The reason why is because if this unit is like the Panasonic 310 with the same components, be forewarned, it will fail.
The Panasonics have had a history of failing after one year. I'm on my second Panasonic DVD player (I was giving them the benefit of the doubt) and I'm starting to see the same symptoms I had with the first one.

I'm actually in the market for a Yamaha DVD player now to go with my upcoming Yamaha RX-V800 receiver and try anything else but Panasonic, however, if the components are the same as the Panasonic, I'll look elsewhere knowing the failure rate of their components.

I'll give average stars since I really don't know a lot about this equipment, but I would like to see more information posted.

Strength:

Quiet play, reliability, good looks

Weakness:

No zoom, price, doesn´t play CD-R´s, CD-RW´s nor MP3`s.

Bought Yamaha-S796 a couple of weeks ago, and have been watching movies ever since. Don´t buy a DVD-player if you still wish to leave the house.
First of all the machine works perfectly. It´s quiet and plays disks without any problems. I have heard stories about all the problems you can have with DVD-players. Basic quality is the most important thing. A machine should do the thing it was built for without misstakes. Yamaha does that.
On the other hand there is absolutely no special functions in the S796. No zoom, no decoders. It doesn´t even play CD-R´s, witch I think is riddiculous, since it costs this much.
If you wish to buy a reliable product, for watching movies, then this is your choise. If you want special features, you should wait for new products. The price is
deffinitely too high.

Strength:

Classic Yamaha looks. Fast tray. Feels like a quality product. Quiet. Has a welcome message and also says good bye when you switch it off. Cool!

Weakness:

Should have some extra's for the price. It isn't magically upgradable to DVD audio.

As the first DVD player I've owned(the 525 was a friends)I would have to say I feel quite happy with my purchase. The sales man I bought it from was comparing the sound quality to more expensive CD players which was interesting because my old Yamaha CDC-625 out performs it even with out the optical link(and it's not exactly an audiophile player!). The DVD player seems to muddy the bass a bit but gives pretty smooth mids and highs. Despite thess qualms I bought this player over the ever popular Pioneer 535 as the 535 had a nasty bright sound that would grate on the ears after a while of play back. The S-796 ia a little more expensive with no world zone installed but as it fits all my current stack of Yamaha gear I opted for it, reduced as it was from it's far too lofty price tag $750. A part of the decision was made on the basis of my older CD player which I bought 6-7 years ago which HAS NEVER EVER FAILED or even hiccupped. I thought sticking with a Yammy would be a good idea.
So far it has not bothered me once. The picture is unfailingly sharp and layer changes are done much quicker than the Pioneer I have used. Read time on the disc is annoyingly slow but I'm comparing that to my CD player which is always going to be faster.
I get the feeling that this is another Yamaha product that is next to bullet proof with understated specs and top real world performance. If it lasts the test of time than what more would you want from a DVD player?

I gave 4 for Value as this would be a steal if it was only a little bit cheaper and 4 instead of 5 for Overall as I its only done what I expected it to do. Nothing more nothing less. Stalwart.
