Still working fine.

*UPDATE*

I just wanted to mention that this DVD player is still working just like it did when I pulled it out of the box, PERFECT! I have watched 100's of movies without any problems. Sometimes when I rent them from Blockbuster and they have GIANT scratches on them, it'll glitch, but that is to be expected, i guess. However if the disc is new or even has "normal" wear and tear, it plays flawlessly. I still give it 5 stars and would recommend it to anyone who wants an easy to use, good looking, excellent picture and audio playing DVD player.

Strength:

Very quiet. On the outside, it appears to be well made and of high quality. Matches perfect with rest of Yamaha system.

Weakness:

For the $'s it should have a Zoom feature and should have composite audio out for 5.1, not just fiber optic.

I purchased this player for a few reasons. Number one was I hadn't seen a review anywhere that said that the "odd" DVD did not work. I am not going to spend $'s on a player that some people have had problems with on the "odd" DVD they purchase/rent. Number two was it ran nice and quiet. I looked at two Sony models of comparable $'s and I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW LOUD THEY WERE. I was impressed with the reviews of visual quality and features, but during a silent part in a movie you would here the disc spinning (and this was from several feet away. I found this in a couple of stores and have read that others have found it as well. Third, I have a Yamaha amp and CD player and liked the idea of going with a product that would blend in with the others so well.

I have thrown the more "complex" DVD's at the player to see how it works and have had ZERO problems with it. It has performed as expected ... perfect. I think a couple of the buttons on the remote could have been labelled better (the different menu buttons) but that is my only non-positive feedback. Above in the Weakness section I put not having zoom ... I have yet to come across why I would need it .. but to have the option would have been nice. Also, even though I would use the fiber optic over the composite for audio, it would have been nice to still have it ... again I don't think I would ever use it, but it would be nice to have just in case (since all other players are standard with these 2 items).

I gave the player a 4 rating for value because I think it is over priced by $100. For $450 you can get AC-3 decoders on board, zoom, composite audio out and a few other features that this player doesn't have. I feel it is a very good player but I also feel that because it is a Yamaha, they ask for more $ to keep it in a higher class when there is no reason for that.

I gave an overall rating of 5 because I am very happy with the player. It is what I expected and that was for a high quality player with not a load of bells-and-whistles that I will never use. I wanted rock solid glitch-free video in a player that will play any DVD I purchase/rent. So far ... that is what I got.

Strength:

Videoquality is very good.
Sound emitted together with my Yam AVR1000 + extra amp för 6th channel and sub is INCREDIBLE. Toy story 2 makes u jump of joy feeling as u were in the movie.
It radiates quality - its quiet, its solid, it has a very nice finish on the gold front in aluminum.
It´s REALLY NICE TO LOOK AT (standing above matching gold AVR1000).

Weakness:

NO CDR SUPPORT - that´s my biggest disapointment since i have to get a matching gold CD player (which do not exist yet).
NO Mp3 support.
Very expensive to make regionfree - about $100

I guess Yam concentrated on looks and quality in build, picture and sound in stead of those extras wich i think is better than doing a "funmachine" with lousy picture and sound........but the same quality with mp3 and CDR support would have been even better of course.

The most anoying thing was that it was so XXXX expensive to do it region free - 100 fuxxin bucks - ROB ME PLZ.

If ure in for a DVD player only to play DVD´s on and u want a NIIIICE looking player then go for the gold finish DVD-S796. U wont be displeased.

Have had it for about 9 months now and it is troublefree so far.

Strength:

Above Build Quality and performance for its price range

Weakness:

No CD-R support

This unit replaces my Pioneer 414, great picture and sound and build quality. I also own a Yamaha RX-V3000 receiver and CDC-675 5 disc CD player. It would be good if it played CD-R, MP3, DVD-A progressive scan etc. But for the money I can't complain. I don't currently require those features and will probably keep it for 2 to 3 years then buy the next generation DVD player that will obvously have these missing features by then. Have tried the DVD player with both CDs and region 1 and 4 DVDs (DTS and DD 5.1) all played perfectly. Actually the CDs sound better on the DVD player than the dedicated CD player. This is now a superceeded model but atleast it is still made in Japan instead of China.

Strength:

Quality, Features

Weakness:

Remote Layout is not intuitive, but since when where they?

I spent quite a bit of time looking at DVD player reviews and reading articles and found buying a DVD player to be a minefield. There are so many features available, and the different typed of modifications for worldzone, macrovision and so on only add to the confusion.

I bought the DVD-S796 because it had the features I needed to integrate it into a good home theatre, no more, no less.

It doesn't have component 5.1 out, but I suspect many manufacturers use this as a marketing feature. I think most people wanting to build a HT would use a Doby Digital Pre-Amp. This is what I intend to do.

My unit is worldzone, plays all zone 1 disks I have tried so far without problem, but I havn't tried any RCE disks. The player is supposed to have manual zone selection so should be able to defeat RCE.

Menu system is excellent. Allows the user to configure just about anything that they would need.

Can convert NTSC to PAL60.

Doesn't have zoom, but many HT televisions have this feature so should not be a problem.

I looked at other players but at the end of the day this one was better built, and I wasn't paying for features that will not be required.

This is certainly not the cheapest DVD player around, but I would happily pay a couple of hundred dollars more for what I consider to be a "serious" player rather than one of the mega mass market mega cheapies.

Strength:

Sound

Weakness:

no coax digital sound out

Excellent sound with my Yamaha v496 receiver, Energy 15's front and rear and 12" Klipsch subwoofer. The sound makes the system with my 26" TV the picture is secondary. The optic out was accidentally damaged and now I can't get 5.1 sound and will have to replace the unit--this is the only reason I would like to have had the coax sound out for backup.

Strength:

Simplicity. Clean design, great menus, quiet disc spin and overall functionality.

Weakness:

Remote layout and button placement.

I've got this player hooked to a Yamaha RXV-496 receiver, being my first step in the minefield of nonsense and intrigue that is home theatre.

I've always maintained that the cinema is a place to go to, not to bring home, except maybe the remants of the film in your head. Boy was I wrong. Having attached a (very) basic Yamaha 5.1 speaker package to the setup and plopped in the dts version of Saving Private Ryan (bad movie imho, but great opening scences for the testing of 'theatre sound')I was hooked.

Now the Jack Black rendition of 'Let's get it on' in High Fidelty has its true voice. And don't my neighbours know it too!

Forgot about the noise of disc spin in other DVD players. My previous Samsung player was a nightmare for that. This player, well, I forgot that was ever an issue.

As for the features. Bollocks to the idea of no coaxial, this is laser, optical is all that's needed. Lots of holes at the back of a machine don't make a good player.

Have to agree with the sentiments expressed here, and in other reviews of Yamaha gear, their remotes are sh*t.

I've got a Loewe Calida tv, and the remote is a pleasure to use. Sound s a wank I know, but the feel of buttons is important, and Loewe remotes are fanastically laid out. Intuitive and clean. Oh, and they're not black whic is a nice change.

Rommendations: Get the DVD player, it's worth it. Tied up to a Yamaha reciever and I reckon the job is sorted. Then the next adventure; getting the speaker package and layout right. Now that is taking some time....

Strength:

excellent sound and video

Weakness:

remote could be better

My Pan. A-120 packed it in a little over a year after purchase. Upon 45 days waiting I became entitled to a replacement. With some arm twisting, the store agreed to let me have the Yamaha player. The Yamaha S796 actually is an improved Panasonic player. It fits in nicely with the Yamaha RX-V2095 and the Yamaha CDC-775 in my stack.
I am quite happy with the S796, excellent audio and video without glitches. Going by the experience I have had with other Yamaha gear, it will probably remain trouble free. The premium one pays for Yamaha components is justified by their built quality and their excellent quality control. For some reason, the Yamaha remotes are not particularly impressive.
It would be nice if their engineers would try and come up with remotes more up to par with their components.
