Strength:

None

Weakness:

Awful color rendition. There are 4 weak menus to enhance picture quality; none which really adjust colors. Skin tones are pink...........

This product is a disapointment and will be returned tomorrow. The only color is shades of green and blue and browns. No digital quality color whatsoever. The local news channel on the digital sony trinitron is so far superior to the color in this DVD.My VCR has better color.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound. Many output choices.

Weakness:

MP3 playback is SLOW due to low kbps playback.

Picture is great and sound is clear. 192khz audio makes CDs sounds CRYSTAL clear. Really like the interface and the optical OR digital coax connections. Two downers: 1) no ability to pulldown 4:3 letterbox to 4:3 standard (admittedly rare, but it would be nice). Can still pulldown 16:9''s to 4:3. 2) The SD2800 will play MP3 encoded CD-Rs (not RWs, despite claims), that are encoded in anywhere from 32kbps to 320kbps. Unfortunately, plays at 96 (maybe 128, but definitely not 160 or higher). So anything higher (and higher quality) is played back SLOW. Basically tells me that, despite their claims in the manual about pirated MP3s, they are marketing to the pirater (who downloads 96kbps tracks) and not the home encoder (who normally goes with 192 - 288). I rip my MP3s from what I own, so I''ll have to do some disks over again to speed up playback enough to stand it.

image quality

I was most impressed by this DVD player. I was one of the unfortunate ones that owned a Panasonic A110 which as many of you know, has a ton of problems playing back certain DVDs. This new player is particularily good in the sense that some oddly authored discs such as "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", which suffered severe de-interlacing artifacts, now play back perfectly without the deinterlaced combing effect which has plauged many players, not just the A110. Image quality is excellent, I particularly like the "Movie2" mode which significantly enhances color reproduction. Black levels are generally excellent as well. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Reliable playback Electronic Picture Control to adjust Black Levels, etc component video out both Coax and Toslink SPDIF out

Weakness:

weak file browser for mp3 playback

I purchased this unit after finally getting fed up with my old Panasonic A110 which has tons of known problems. I was getting blocking and other artifacts on almost any dual layered DVD at around 45-60 min into a movie. Anyhow, so I bought this one after a friend recommended it. Just about ANY DVD player would have been better than my old Panasonic, but I have been very happy with the performance of this player. The access time between menu''s and the layer change is much faster than I''m used to on the old Panasonic. In retrospect, after watching films on this DVD player I realized that some apparant flaws that in mastering that I thought were on some of my DVDs were a result of my old crappy player. For instance, in the new directors cut of "Star Trek: The motion picture", I noticed a slight problem on my old DVD player with this film, for some reason during some of the camera cuts in the movie you would see this apparant "interlace combing" effect even though I don''t have a progressive scan TV and was watching it on a standard NTSC TV. I couldn''t explain this problem and it was the ONLY DVD that I had this problem on so I shrugged it off as a DVD mastering problem with the disc. But now, after playing this disc on the new Toshiba that artifact is completely gone. Perhaps there were mastering differences on the disc itself that would explain the difficulties on my old Panasonic player, but even if there are, it appears that the Toshiba has a more complete DVD-spec implementation that can account for these differences in mastering.

Strength:

Great value for interlaced DVD and mp3 player with file browser (although weak) support. Seems to play a broader range of mp3 formats without a hitch, unlike some other mp3 players in this price range.

Weakness:

Weak mp3 browser. Toshiba needs to upgrade the file browser to support long filenames, and to allow you to browse by album (folder).

Purchased this player, mostly for the mp3 capability. I don''t have hdtv, so progressive function didn''t matter. I originally purchased the panasonic rv32k but had to return it. The Panasonic would only play selective mp3 files, some of them would skip and speed up and skip again. The Panasonic was very picky about which audio files it would play correctly and there was no rhyme or reason as to why it would or would not play them. This Toshiba player plays all my files just fine (I''ve tested mp3 files encoded at cbr 160, 192, 224, and VBR; I encoded using both Fraunhoefer and Lame encoders). The only weak part about the Toshiba''s mp3 browser is that it only displays an iso-9660 layout for the cd files. For example, you have to scroll through all the tracks, rather than being able to browse by folder like you could with the Panasonic. Also, the filenames that it supports are only 8.3 format, so if you record cd''s using Joliet (long filename support) they will show up like this: ENYAm~11mMEM~1. I''m sure those of you familiar with truncated filenames know what I mean. This is the only gripe. The video is fine. No stuttering like other''s have reported. Also, Toshiba claims that this player doesn''t support 80 minute CDR''s, but I''ve managed to play them with no problem (Verbatim blue dye). All in all, I think I''ll keep this player despite it''s weak mp3 file browser (at least compared to the Panasonic) because it plays the files correctly, which, needless to say, is more important than having a pretty browser.

Strength:

NONE that stand out except you can get real cheap {for a reason}

Weakness:

PICTURE QUALITY {colour} LOOKED AND FELT CHEAP REMOTE KIND OF SUCKED BUT DONT THEY ALL

Bought this dvd player mainly for the price since a friend of mine wanted to buy my pioneer dvd player.Thought that it would be a good chance to get somrthing new and maybee a few new features BUT all i got was an inferior dvd player. If i had never had a dvd player before i probably would have been happy with it not having anything to compare with. I found it fairly clear BUT the colour was dead looking. I was constantly messing with the colour on my tv to get a decent picture. So i went out and bought another PIONEER and low and behold i had my nice colour and crystal clear picture back.I then was curious and bought a panasonic to try out and it was inbetween the toshiba and the pioneer. IF you want a excellent PICTURE and SOUND go for the PIONEER for a couple bucks more it IS worth it. If you want gadgets and buttons and a nice picture get the panasonic. STAY AWAY FROM THE TOSHIBA UNLESS your just looking for a CHEAP dvd player for the kids or bedroom.
