Strength:

sound (when it works), video

Weakness:

wouldnt pick up a dd or dts signal after 3 months

This dvd works well, great video and audio. However, the build of it is weak. The player, after only 3 months of use would not read dolby digital or dts signals. It just wouldnt pick the track up. Had to return it.

Strength:

easy to manuever with remote,

Weakness:

none that i have found yet

i have used this player for about 6 months now and it is excellent. colors and sound are great and i haven't had any other problems. i have played new disks, rented disks and disks with scratches on them and all have played flawlessly. I think Toshiba ironed the bugs out on this one. i have a disk that plays in the Toshiba but i took it over to my parents who have a player that is twice the cost of this one and it won't play the disk, it skips and cuts out. so five stars for this one.

Value and sound quality

Weakness:

Stops 2 or 3 times during every movie

SD-2800 Skips and Stops. The disk has to be flawless. My computer DVD ROM which was cheaper reads the same disks with no flaws.

Strength:

Awesome video & audio, random MP3 playability, Zoom feature. Slim design.

Weakness:

Red light/Green light power off/on LED very annoying. Remote buttons layout.

After trying several DVD players, JVC, Panasonic, Pioneer the SD2800 was the best for the price and features. Picture is superb with either composite or S-Video o/p. Also has Picture enhancements. Equipped with virtual Surround sound feature if you need it. MP3 playability with random feature is a good workaround for the lack of a programmable playlist/menu feature. Is anybody tired and fet up of being able to see only about 1/2 of the TV screen when watching a DVD in wide screen? Well the zoom feature resolves this by resizing the picture in increments up to the full screen if you have a normal non-widescreen TV. Of course when you zoom use lose some on the sides. Zoom to a nearly full screen and it's an acceptable compromise. Has all i/ps and o/ps you'll need optical, RCA, S-Video. Easy installation and good manual. The remote could be layed out a little better though. Button placement do not flow logically. After 5mnths of use still need the lights on if I want to rwnd/ffwd in slow motion for example. All in all an awesome player for the money!

Weakness:

1) When I change the aspect ratio with the zoom button, it leave all sorts of text on the screen. I then have to hit the 'display' button 5 times to clear it. 2) If I pause for 15 minutes, it goes into screensaver and forgets all my zoom settings requiring me to do (1) all over. 3) Horizontal scan line interruption across my screen goes up slowly. Possibly due to interference, but I'm using S-video cable and rearranged the wires to minimize 60Hz coupling with no improvement. 4) More noise coming out of this box than I would like. 5) Slow response from important buttons like "Menu"

Not impressed with this product. It's on its way back.

Strength:

Full featured player, well built, excellent audio and video. Great price!

Weakness:

No progressive scan, mp3 playback system

Well, I got sick and tired of VHS - finally - and decided to hop on the DVD bandwagon. Enter the Toshiba 2800. This nice little unit is well made, easy to operate, and so far works like a charm. Image quality is fantastic and audio is great, as is the norm from DVD. I haven't had any trouble with the unit. It's a great starter deck, but it has plenty of features to compete with the bigger guys in the DVD player arena. Don't get an Apex and pray that it doesn't flake out on you - make a quality investment. The Toshiba SD-2800 is a reliable consistant performer, is easy to use, and has great picture and audio every time. You can't go wrong.

Strength:

Good picture, sound. Zoom feature.

Weakness:

"Freezes" occasionally. Internal menus display slowly. Remote is small and poorly laid out.

I selected this unit because the price was right and I've had good experience with Toshiba products. The picture and sound quality are fine, but it does "freeze" occasionally when the disc is dirty or scratched. And it's difficult to get past the freeze point. The internal menu functions display rather slowly (sort of like an underpowered computer), but the menu system is logical. Important functions like sound mode and subtitles can be accessed with convenient buttons on the remote during playback. I found the zoom feature especially useful on movies in the 2.35:1 ratio. At that ratio the letterboxing is so extreme that I don't think that more than 50% of my TV screen is being used. And the picture height is too small to be enjoyable. Setting the zoom to the first level of magnification was a great improvement, without losing much off the sides of the picture. The remote with this unit is small and not well laid out. So it's difficult to go quickly into Pause or Reverse, for example. I like to replay a few seconds of a movie when I don't understand the dialogue. I finally replaced this unit (within the 30 days at Best Buy) and got the new Sony DVP-NS315. The Sony is better in most respects, but alas, there is no zoom. I guess I'll just have to break down and get a larger TV.

Strength:

Good audio and video playback. Would work good for a second player or for the kids.

Weakness:

Intermittant DTS playback problems when unit was new.

Since this is my first DVD player I can`t tell you how it compares to other players, except to say that the video and audio quality seems fine to me. The player has on an occasion or two not read and reproduced the DTS soundtrack. This situation was remedied by stopping playback(the video was working fine, just no audio)and restarting. Also after pausing playback of a DTS soundtrack and later resuming after the player had shut it self off, a high pitched sound came from my speakers. This could be something from my receiver a Rotel RSX-972. I`ve heard that if you don`t have DTS decoding (I do incidently)and select that soundtrack that a high pitched sound will emit from your speakers. So this might be a problem with my reciever not recognizing the format inially, since this particular reciever automaticaly selects 5.1 channel decoding depending on what format the user selects with the DVD player. DD is the default 5.1 format.I`ve been using the coax output from day one and neither problem has occured with any real frequency. The menus are very informative and easy to use and set-up. Even though I believe that this player works fine I probably would not buy one again. I would spend more money and buy an upscale player.

Weakness:

lack of a song list menu

I was so surprised at the size and how light the unit was initially. This is for the cottage and the rainy days, because you shouldn't be inside watching movies at the cottage...right? Anyways, I bought the unit on a friday afternoon, had it setup by 7:00pm that evening. The DVD decoder messed up around sunday morning. Got a replacement unit monday afternoon. Everything is cool now. I agree with the other reviews regarding the lack of a menu or track listing for the mp3 or cd list of songs. Other than that a really good unit for the price.

Strength:

price, picture and sound quality

Weakness:

MP3 playback menu

This is my first DVD player. As far as I can tell, everything is great as far as picture and sound quality. The only problem I''ve encountered is with MP3 playback. When I pop in a CD that contains 150 to 200 MP3''s, it only recognizes and plays 50 or 60, however, this may be a problem with my PC, the burner, or the actual files, I haven''t had a chance to investigate fully. Also, the MP3 playback menu doesn''t display the titles in a clear fashion. The field is too short and displays slashes and un-needed characters.
