Strength:

The price at the time was good. Now I know why.

Weakness:

Has less then a year life span

Don't even consider buying this piece of garbage. My DVD SD-1700 was purchase only last Christmas and the sound just died this week. Of course the warrenties are all up now. It's only had "at the most" 20 dvd's played in it's short life.

Strength:

Nothing special

Weakness:

Blows when the power goes out or even if you flip a breaker. Sound sucks. Had to replace parts. Toshiba is off my list of audio/video equip.

Ditto to what the gentlemen said in the November 1 entry about replacing parts C927 and C928 with larger capacitors from Radio shack (part 272-1028). I followed those instructions and the sound came back. Pain the the neck to have to do this, but for $9 I spent (including buying a soder kit) and 45 minutes of personal time I guess it is worth it.

Strength:

NONE.

Weakness:

Blows up every time you turn off breakers.

I buy a lot of Consumer Electronics. This is THE WORST product I have ever experienced. THE WORST! I bought my first one over a year ago. It worked ok and I was fairly satisfied with it. Then one day I had to turn off the breaker in the house to wire a light fixture. I tried to turn on the DVD player shortly after and it quit. I opened it up and found a blown fuse. I tried a new fuse and it blew right away. I then headed back to the store and exchanged it for another one. Fast forward 6 months. Time for a new fixture in the hallway so I turn off power. Guess what? DVD player is dead again. EXACTLY the same problem even though it is a different unit. Two DVD players both dead. No other equipment in the house has been harmed ever by turning the breakers off and on. NEVER.

Strength:

Remote was good, product did what it was required.

Weakness:

Poor build quality (power supply bad at 10 months, and distorted sound)

For a first DVD player, it seemed okay while it worked. At 10 months, the power supply went out. When we took it back to Best Buy they looked at it saying it would be taken car of, but then told us it would be $110 for labor plus a $25 estimate. We said no to the repair and they waived the estimate charge since they miss informed us about their being a cost. They had beaten it up in process of looking at it though, and after they hassled us about repairing the cosmetic damage. When required to repair the physical damage they created, they eventually chose to replace the product with a new DVD player. We purchased a Panasonic this time and are profoundly more impressed. The new Panasonic has better features and sound quality. The Toshiba always had distorted high pich tones, either through the TV or Stereo. We always thougt it was because we had to use a RF modulator. We now know it was the Toshiba DVD player, because the new Panasonic doesnt do it. Toshiba's service was not helpful to us like other reviews noted. They were not interested in working anything out to cover the labor, and would not provide us the parts to take it to someone cheaper to repair the product. Now were glad its gone. Best Buy eventually took care if it, but it required 4 trips and a lot of hassal to get there.

Strength:

Easy to use. Good quality when working.

Weakness:

Two failures to date. I regret that I didn't purchase an extended warranty on this product.

My unit's audio failed after 4 months. Toshiba replaced it. It has failed again after 15 months. No word from customer service after one week.

Weakness:

I will never purchase a Toshiba product again.

The second time I turned on my 10 Month old Toshiba SD-1700 DVD Player, the audio and front display capability failed in exactly the same manner as has been previously described here by others. And, numerous attempts to get information from the manufacturer failed (it is also bad with their computer products). An Internet search located a United Kingdom link that listed identical failures on models SD-1750, SD-2800, and SD-110E. The finding suggests a widespread design defect. Specifically noted were shorted capacitors C927 and C928 (iooufd/16Volt). Those designations correspond to identical devices on the SD-1700 audio/video board and confirmed the belief that the subassemblies were fundamentally the same. When two $0.99 replacement capacitors (Radio Shack #272-1028)with a higher voltage rating were installed, normal Player function resumed. The repair effort required approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Strength:

I can't say many good things about this unit so far. I am very disappointed in it's performance.

Weakness:

Already stated.

I bought this as a refurbished model on Ebay in December 2001. I know it's kind of risky buying from there, but I checked it out and it was a refurbished model from an authorized Toshiba Dealer. I thought it would be fine until this week. It has no power, won't turn on at all. It had worked like the price I paid for it, average to a little below average. It did as everyone else says, paused or froze for a second while watching a movie, but nothing major. Now I'm facing a likely expensive repair bill and will probably just buy something different. I called customer service today and the nearest authorized repair shop will take about an hour to get too. Not what I was expecting from the Toshiba name after 6 months of my use and a unit that was built in June 2001.

Strength:

Good service if you bother to ask for it.

Weakness:

Obviously this unit has a build problem

My SD1700 also died after about 10 months of use. The audio and display functions quit simultaneously. I was pretty upset at first bwcause the SD1700 is only warranted for labor for 90 days, and the people at the service center told me that it would cost $65 to fix the problem (parts free). When I was at the service center to drop off the unit, another guy was there with the same problem. He had called Toshiba, however, and they had agreed to pick up the total cost of the repair. Boy what a lucky break. I called Toshiba when I got home, and they agreed to pick up all charges. When I picked up the repaired unit, the technician told me that this was a common problem with the SD1700 and that it was due to two bad capacitors in the audio amplifier. If anyone reading this review has the SD1700, or is considering buying one (used or new) make sure that this problem has been taken care of, or get an agreement upfront that Toshiba will fix it for free

Strength:

It played every movie I tried, zoom works on every movie (not just anamorphic ones).

Weakness:

Reliability, extremely sensitive to even mild heat, remote isn''t that great, looks ugly compared with most other players, the zoom quality isn''t as good as players that zoom only Anamorphic movies.

I''m reviewing the Toshiba 1750, which is the Canadian model of the Toshiba 1700. It''s the same DVD player, with the same features though. My experience was not good. My player skipped (paused for several seconds randomly) if I used it with the audio cabinet door closed. Apparently, heat is a problem with this unit. After realizing that, I played movies with the doors open... no problems. That is until a couple of weeks ago, when it started pausing randomly on every movie. On top of that, the remote is uncomfortable and complicated. One thing I liked about the Toshiba was it''s zoom feature, which would zoom even non-anamorphic movies. However, the quality of zoom is not nearly as good as that of other players. The bottom line for me is that the player is way too heat sensitive (the thing wasn''t even getting that warm) and the reliability is just not there. I''m happy it failed now, because the thing probably would not have been useful in the summer months due to heat problems.

Strength:

Good price, good performance. 8

Weakness:

The box seems light and flimsy.@

This is my first DVD player and in general I''ve been satisfied. It plays everything reliably and produces a clean, crisp picture. It has one quirk, though: The eject button on the remote doesn''t always cause the disc drawer to eject; I have to eject a disk or open the drawer with the button on the machine. This is erratic, however. Å
