Strength:

All in one space saver, one less box in your entertainment system.

Weakness:

clumsy remote, no tech support

Excellent choice and the audio power is more than enough for an apartment. I could only use half the sound and it is quite enough and clear. most of the wires are easy to connect.

One problem I had was my TV out to the receiver is very week. I have to put the maximum sound to hear my TV through receiver. I am still not able to figure out that part. Sound splitting is very good and much picture is very clear. I can see a couple of DVDs freez, but played ok when I cleaned them and replayed. I am ok with this because of the price I have paid ($239 + 30 shipping from ubid ).

Strength:

A great value as compared to separate DVD and receiver

Weakness:

The remote!

I priced DVD players and receivers for a couple of weeks before I ordered this one. There was no way I could come close to these features for the price I paid for this Toshiba ($400 shipped, from vanns.com in Montana). It has both Dolby Digital and DTS, sufficient power for my modest home theater (Energy Take 5 speakers), and goes nicely with my Toshiba TV (component outputs). The space saving of combining the DVD and receiver is significant.
As the previous reviewer mentioned, the remote is REALLY inconvenient. Very small buttons, very small print, and not at all intuitive. The Toshiba TV's remote is far, far better. Maybe I'll get used to it. Meanwhile, minus one star.

Strength:

Interesting idea

Weakness:

Bad idea to combine two functions into one unit. If it dies, you lose both the player and the amp. We used it less than 5 hours/week, and it died in November (7 months)!! We watched less than 10 DVDs, and probably only played a CD or two a week. Now the DVD is dead and there's no sound from the speakers (but the cute display and all the buttons work great).

This has been our worst experience with a product ever. I bought the player/receiver because it had a one year warranty, but it turned out to be only three months labor and one year parts. After paying over $400, they now want over $200 more in labor ($50 non refundable) to fix it for "totally reworking the power supply". Then I've only got another two months left on the parts, and if anything else goes wrong it could turn into an $800 unit. I Don't Think So!! It's going in the trash heap, because I'm going to buy a normal DVD player and a better amp. The combination unit was supposed to save a little space, but cost a lot of $$$ for NOTHING. Looks like next time we'll buy the extended warranty, and it's NOT going to be a toshiba. This DOG won't hunt!

Strength:

- Price
- All in one DVD player and receiver
- Onkyo receiver
- Direct connection between receiver/player
- DTS decoder

Weakness:

- Remote
- Slightly under-powered

I've owned the unit two years now and have experienced nothing but troublefree operation. I own two other DVD players (listed above) and DVD discs which exhibit playback problems on the other two, never do on the Toshiba SD6109. Although not supported, the unit will even play homebrewed VCDs I've created/burned to CD-RW media (CompUSA, CircuitCity, Princo). Although slightly underpowered for larger rooms, I am using the Toshiba SD6109 in a cozy basement audio/video nook where it pumps out more than enough to make the walls/floors shake.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound. Integrated 50 watt receiver.
Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. Component video out.

Weakness:

Does not have HDCD decoding, as advertised.
Remote is too busy. So many features, makes too many buttons, means buttons are too small, means buttons are hard to read.

I purchased the SD-6109c last month. The list price is $799.00. I was able to purchase it for great price of $400.00 through BID.com. The receiver is actually made by Onkyo, but Toshiba manufactures the DVD drive and slaps their name on it.
The Onkyo version is the DR90 and lists for $699.00.
I am extremely pleased with this system. The main drawback is that Toshiba has a misprint on their web site showing this model as having HDCD decoding for 20 bit compact discs.
I spoke with a Toshiba support person and they told me that only two models: the SD3109 and the SD4109x have HDCD decoding. I informed them their web site shows the SD6109c as having the HDCD feature. (No where in my operating manual does it mention HDCD.) Their answer was there is a misprint and "these things happen." I would have been pissed off if I purchased this machine just for this feature,
but I didn't.
Anyone selling this system on the Internet and using the information from the Toshiba web site will also have this misprint.
Hopefully Toshiba is not using false advertising, I don't know.
I believe Toshiba's products are good. I give the SD6109c a four star rating.

Strength:

All in one unit--DVD player, and Receiver--hook up your speakers and you've got instant home theater. DD, DTS, PRO LOGIC--it's got it all.

Weakness:

Remote is busy but the unit does have tons of features and it's nice to be able to use them by remote.

Absolutly a fantastic product. Not one problem to date. Great space saver. Well worth the $432.02 delivered that I paid at bid.com--price has gone up to $495 but now they offer free shipping. I am really enjoying this product--sound is amazing especially on Saving Private Ryan DTS version--you really can hear the difference. Wonderfull DVD player I higly recomend it.

Strength:

Good picture, good Dolby Digital for DVD, enough power for small to medium sized rooms.

Weakness:

Not good for CD play and impossible to connect DVD-Audio or SACD. Very poor remote.

I have been using this Toshiba unit for more than six months now. I purchased it because of the low price and wanted to set up a surround-sound center in my moderate sized living room without going broke.

I have been very happy with the DVD performance. Movies look and sound great and my wife and I have greatly enjoyed the step-up from our old VCR. But.......

I play CD's much more often than I watch movies and I immediately noticed that this unit did not have anywhere near the clarity or quality of my old Denon stereo receiver and CD player. Music just doesn't have the "right" feel anymore. There is less separation, less of a soundstage, and more muddiness than I was accustomed to. I, also, want to upgrade to either a DVD-Audio or SACD player in the future and their are no inputs for these on the Toshiba. So I want to sell this unit and upgrade to better musically sounding electronics. Buy it only if you plan to watch movies with it.

Strength:

Ease of set-up; all-in-one, space saving unit, value for features

Weakness:

Cluttered remote

After searching hi and low for an affordable home theater soluction I found this gem on Mobshop.com for close to $350. It may be underpowered for some (50 watts/channel), but living in a New York apartment doesn't leave one many opportunities for cranking up the volume -- not if you want to stay friendly with the neighbors. The audio features are outstanding, and coupled with good bookshelf speakers (check out Paradigm Atoms), you get alot of bang for your buck. The remote, on the other hand, is a pain. I'm programing the Sony TV's remote to perfrom its functions.

Strength:

Oustanding price for complete package: DVD player with Dolby Digital & DTS Receiver

Weakness:

As others have stated, poor remote.

Have only had this unit a couple of nights but I was very impressed. Picked it up for $450 from Onecall, whom I highly recommend - ordered late evening, shipped the next day, arrived two biz days later.

I was concerned about the rather modest 50 watts per channel but it proved more than ample for my modest living room. This is high quality, high current power manufactured by Onkyo from what I understand. Definite no loss of power that I can find after going through both Tomorrow Never Dies and Saving Private Ryan at high volumes. Oustanding little unit and you can't beat the price anywhere.

Sure, you can pick up some of the low end $399 receivers now but I have yet to find one with Dolby Digital AND DTS like this unit has. For another $50 you get DTS and a DVD player. Outstanding deal.

I'm hoping to pick up a set of Mission speakers so I can see how it handles the requirements of high end speaks though my targeted 771s are pretty efficient at 87db. Overhauling my system and decided to get this unit so I could spend the majority of my budget on great speaks.

Strength:

Low cost; Dolby digital AND DTS. Simple to operate. Compact (two units in one). Considering only 50 Watts per channel, really has oomph.

Weakness:

Discs make slight hum when being operated (not annoying unless you're right next to it). Remote can only operate Toshiba TV's. Tends to want to jump out of DTS mode on Eagles concert DVD and you have to start the disk over completely to get back into DTS Mode (but once you figure out not to do anything until you get into the body of the program you're okay). Won't play CD-Rs. Only 50 Watts per channel. Remote design.

Okay, of course this unit isn't going to compare with a $500 DVD Player and a $700 receiver. But for $400 this baby is awesome. I don't need a lot of power to my other speakers since I've got a huge, active subwoofer.
It's amazing what you can get for the money now. I paid $650 for my basic laserdisc player six years ago. I paid $550 for my pro-logic receiver three and a half years ago. Now I can get a DVD player and Receiver with built in DD and DTS for 2/3 the cost. WOW! I did a lot of shopping before I bought this, and in the end I feel like I only sacrificed two things: the fact that this player doesn't play CD-Rs (which most players don't anyway), And the fact that it only has 50 watts/channel (which is actually enough to power my medium-sized bookshelf speakers no problem). While there are definate negatives to this unit, in the end I have to say that WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FOR $400? It sounds fantastic and does everything I want it to, including decoding DTS DVDs (which was important to me). The one person that gave this unit such a low rating has to ask himself...what did you expect for the price? I love this baby, and will still be using it as a second unit in my home when I later expand (read: can afford) to purchasing one of those 200 or 300 disc DVD changers along with all separates. I also love the fact that it saves me space in my cramped shelf under my T.V. So, yes there are negatives, but oooooh what a BANG for your BUCK! This thing sounds great!
